We just got to keep pushing till were in. Lol trust me the first acceptance the excitement will come back. Like woahh ill actually be a doctor.

Agreed. We’ve been working for years just to get in. Once we get that first acceptance, it’ll be a whole new type of excitement because we’ll actually be in.

I hope so! Only 9 more days to go until then. I'll be hearing from 3 schools at 7 am sharp apparently so I hope to hear some good news. At least if it's all bad news I'll know I've been doing something wrong during interviews and have a chance to correct it before the oncoming ones.

True. I'll be hearing from a couple then too. I'm trying to keep the same amount of focus each time. But man does the process get to you mentally. You guys thinking of attending all your interviews?

Yep. I’ll be hearing that morning from the two schools I interviewed at. 8 days, 22 hours, 20 mins and 25 seconds. But who’s counting?

I've currently scheduled a date for all of them but I really don't want to attend them all. I wish there was a way to get a feel for school without actually visiting lol. Would also be nice to hear about their available financial aid and stuff. I wish they just each had a financial aid calculator that could estimate it for you. Would help me cut my list down a ton.

I fully admit to being a bit jealous right now, I haven't had enough interviews yet to get exhausted :p Wishing all of you luck on the 15th, though! I'm sure you'll all hear great news!

Honestly I feel like the ideal amount of interviews in terms of being able to enjoy all of them is like 3 to 4.

I had 3 within a week of each other but ended up canceling the last one. Two interviews was a good number to enjoy them both, although I would have liked to go to the third. More than that would start to get exhausting.

What made you cancel the last one? Three in one week does sound rough. I've limited myself to two a week.

Attending the ones I already made travel plans for this month and I do want to see those, but after this might have to call it quits on any OOS ones (again, granted oct 15 gives good news lol:whistle:)

I’m just about to start really hitting the trail this upcoming week since I’ve been overseas. Hopefully defending my Master’s and presenting at a conference have prepared me for explaining my research over and over lol

One of my top choice schools is heavy on research and I have that interview in a week and I've been getting a little rusty on my research recently. Any suggestions besides reading through my old project stuff? I'm not doing MD PhD but I'm assuming considering your position you're good at describing your research so some tips would be helpful.

So far at my other interviews I've never been matched with a researcher and have gotten little to no questions on my research so I'm definitely getting rusty. I know this next one will ask about it in depth though.

Also one week from tomorrow and acceptances will start going out :xf:

I practiced explaining my research to a few people who knew nothing about the subject. Which was good because I got asked about it in my first interview, and one of the interviewers had zero knowledge about it. Very glad I practiced that.

I'm more worried about being asked about it by someone who knows a ton about it haha. I've done a ton of teaching and I'm usually pretty good at taking into account what people know and don't know so explaining to someone who knows nothing about it hasn't been an issue. If I get matched with an expert on the topic then it's gonna be tough though lol.

Ha. My first interviewer at my second interview was actually a specialist in the field. I was expecting a lot of deep questions but he only wanted a summary. Possibly because it was math leaning.

Yeah, no one has wanted in depth explanations on my research. I was prepared to give more for a research question but my interviewer changed the subject after I explained the different projects I had been on.

Also yes. I can’t believe how tiring it is to interview. I feel rested and great all week but after an interview, my brain is done for the day. I think it’s like paying attention in class except I do it for the duration of the interview to make sure I don’t miss any details about the school and I want to make the most of my time there. But man, it is exhausting and I really feel for you guys getting burnt out. It’s a weird feeling, especially if you fly out that night.

Yep. People don’t realize how exhausting it is to be hyper vigilant for a long time.

I have 3 pitches I kind of prepared.1 min, 5 min, and a 10 min talk and all different depending on audience. To lay people I emphasize the goals/motivation of my research since that’s what they tend to care the most about. With medical people, I talk about it’s relevance with disease/physiology. With other scientists, I emphasize our hypotheses and our group’s picture of the direction the field is headed in and how our research fits into it.

I would just have a few bullet points in mind and like M935 said, don’t write a script but practice briefly explaining to people (lay people and scientists) what you do / did. For interview situations, 1-2 min is probably ideal.

Yeah when I was first asked about it, it was at a 2-on-1 interview where the one interviewer had a working knowledge of the subject and the other one had zero knowledge of it. That was interesting. I just told the one who knew a little that I was going to briefly summarize the background for the benefit of the other person, then went into a summary of it. In total, I think I spoke about it for 3-4 mins because I had to give a basic intro to game theory and then how it applies to oncology.

Finally, someone who understands me

I've only had to go more in-depth on my research with one interview so far. Most I just explain the basic research question that we were trying to answer and what my role in the research was, then they move the conversation to a different topic. The research heavy schools did tend to ask specific questions about my research and how scholarly efforts would factor into my career in medicine

Awesome thanks everyone for the advice on the research. I've mainly been giving the short description focused on the goal of my research at most schools but this upcoming interview is very big on research and I'm like 95% sure I'll get asked a little more about it so I'll prepare a more detailed answer just in case.

This!!! In one of m interviews the med student interviewer asked me to explain my research to him as if he were a 5th grader. He was super chill and funny about it and I think he was understanding but dang it was hard! He'd sometimes stop me and be like "what's a molecule?" and stuff like that. It was kind of stressful but also a super good exercise. I just wish I'd been more prepared for that.

Yah that’s definitely a good exercise. You forget how much you ever had to learn to begin with. It’s also a good way to see if people are speaking in jargon they don’t really understand or if they actually have a solid foundation. If I was interviewing this is how I would ask.

Same. If you can explain it using no jargon to someone who doesn’t know anything about the topic, you really know what you’re talking about.

I expect and hope to see a large movement on this thread in 6 days.

Unfortunately I won't be expecting any decisions on the 15th, but I'm looking forward to seeing all the good news I know people will be posting!

If you look back at different threads you can see when some of the schools start calling.
You know, back when I first discovered SDN, I might have wanted to look up this kind of information. But now, I think I'm good. I think I've got enough information and times/dates/things that I don't want to know. I feel like not knowing gives me some type of freedom.

Yeah, I don't care exactly what time. In fact, if I know they typically start calling at 0700, and I don't get called, I'm going to get freaked out.

I won't be hearing back until at least November either. Would be a nice Thanksgiving gift.

Hearing back from a school I really really like on the 15th, but don't hear back from my #1 until later in the cycle - either way I'm hoping for good news!! The real question - will it be more or less nerve-wracking to wait on decisions now knowing that after Oct 15th schools can tell you at really any time

While you're celebrating, make sure to have a beer (or several) for those of us who have to be patient!

I don't drink. But I'll drink a smoothie for you.
