I followed up via emails. The first email was a follow up to my interview last year to see what I could have done to be more competitive next time around (since I didn't get in). While they won't give specifics and offer more general suggestions, I knew I needed some more endodontic related experiences as I really had none.
As I made progress with CEs I would follow up occasionally to let them know what I was working towards. I think just the fact of contacting them to show I was still interested in their program was what was most important. Also, they will likely remember you as an applicant when they pull your file for review due to maintaining a line of communication.
There is a great book called the proximity principle by Ken Coleman that everyone should read when considering what direct to go to find pourpose in your career...as well as how to get there once you decide.
