hey team if any of y'all are going to accepted students day today let me know how it goes/if there is anything cool or important said! I won't be able to make it cause flights were too expensive for the short notice but I am coming to the second one in June. I haven't been added to the FB page yet so I don't have much info. Hopefully I can get added to the FB page soon so I can meet you guys. Where do students usually stay for housing? How is living in Tulsa/Oklahoma?

Students live all over the area. The closest to school is Westport Apartments, and several students live there. It's not the best area and the complex is pretty old but it is cheap and you can walk to class and the river trails are right next to it if you like to bike or run.

Some students go for rental houses--there are plenty in the Brookside area (Peoria between ~31st and I-44). Brookside is kind of a trendy place with a Whole foods, several bars, coffee shops, boutiques, etc. and a pretty easy drive to school (when Riverside construction ends, at least). Another popular district is Cherry Street, which is a section of 15th street between Peoria and Utica. There are some apartments and rent houses in the area directly north and south of Cherry Street. It might take a few minutes longer to get to school from this location but there's Chipotle and Qdoba there so it's probably worth it.

Many students live in the Tuscany Hills and Nickel Creek apartments off of hwy 75. They're newer, nice apartments and not inexpensive (although most places will seem cheap to an out of state student). They are just across the highway from a shopping center called Tulsa Hills. It has a Target, Staples, many places to eat and is a rapidly developing area. Turkey Mountain, a popular urban wilderness area to hike and ride mountain bikes and a trailhead for the River Trails, is just a couple miles away. These apartments are a few miles from school and 75 can get busy during the rush hours but it is nothing like the Broken Arrow Expressway ('The BA').

Not as popular but something to consider is something in Sand Springs. It's on the northwest-ish side of the city and connected to hwy 412 which never has bad traffic on it so it is really a 10 minute commute even in rush hour. Apartments will be cheaper than in Tulsa proper, too.

AVOID:

'North' Tulsa. This is basically anything north of downtown. This is how Tulsa got on A&E's 'The First 48.'

Anywhere that requires you to commute on the BA. That stretch of highway makes baby Jesus cry twice a day. Just don't do it.

Basic socioeconomic layout of Tulsa: The further south you go, the more golf courses you see.

Can you comment on Vintage on Yale? Looks like a super nice place in a good area from 1200 miles away.

I've never been there and don't know of any classmates who live there, but I can tell you it's in a good area. It's a little far from school and just by browsing their website for a few seconds it looks pretty close to a Tuscany Hills/Nickel Creek type of apartment. Since you OOS people are often shocked by the low cost of living here, or if you have financial assistance from someone, the Enclave at Brookside is something to consider that is significantly more than most other apartments but pretty nice (wasted money if you ask me but it's another option).
A lot of this depends on what you're looking for. Some don't mind driving 80-90 minutes a day, some like to study at home, some never come to class, have a family, want to live close to the nightlife spots and party scene etc. so it really just depends on what you are personally looking for.

Thanks so much!!! I just want to end up in a nice safe place so I will look towards the south lol. I drove into north tulsa during my interview and felt very much like an outsider haha. Other than the the places that should be avoided, is Tulsa otherwise a safe town? I walked in the center of down town at night and felt very comfortable. However, I just want to make sure I find a safe place to live (for my soon to be wife's sake).

Tulsa is like any other sizable city, the parts to stay away from are pretty obvious. OSU-CHS campus is not in the most desirable area but during the day there's not much to worry about. Students can always get a security guard to escort them to their car (I would certainly recommend this for all the female students after dark). Most all of the downtown areas are safe and have a good presence of police. The few areas you want to avoid in Tulsa are places you have no reason to go to anyway.
 
Anyone know how much movement to expect on the waiting list and how many people are on it? I have emailed Sarah and haven't heard back. Also, there was no mention of when people on the wait-list receive a final decision. I assume August 1st or around there perhaps?
 
I called both Sarah and Maghin today and no answer 🙁

This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. I have lived in Tulsa my entire life and spent the majority of my undergrad in NORTH Tulsa. Yes, every city will have a slum/trash area, but don't generalize NORTH Tulsa all together. You can get some decent, cheap housing in North Tulsa and live absolutely fine with no trouble. There are some trashy living areas by OSU-CHS as well.

If you want a nice place to live that is fairly cheap I would highly consider living right on Riverside Drive. They are currently doing construction renovating the park right now, but there are easy routes to go around until they finish up. The place is beautiful and cheap, some apartment complexes require you to be 18+ (no kids or teenagers), which could be good or it may not.
If you are more of a "small/smaller" town type of person, I would recommend checking into Skiatook (20 minute commute down Hwy 75) or Owasso (10-15 minutes down Hwy 75) for your smaller, more suburban areas of living. If it were me, I would live on Riverside Drive or an apartment in Owasso.
 
So from my email with Maghin, she mentioned that the waiting list is not ranked. She also mentioned that it is cut down end of May/start of June. If you remain on the waitlist by then, you can find out up until the first day of class (August 8th). How do you cut down a list of students if they aren't ranked? I am not sure if I just missed something there...She also made it sound like the number of students on the waitlist is not released.

Based on my conversations with her and other students, I believe they pull from the waitlist the same way they select for interviews. Once you're put on the waitlist you are just another student on the waitlist and every time they need to pull for the waitlist to fill an empty acceptance spot they consider everyone on the waitlist equally and decide based on all of the information they have on all of the students at that time. In May/June when they do their major pull, they probably just select as many students as they have spots available since they will not be able to add new students to the waitlist after interviews are entirely over.

That makes sense. I guess it sucks that they don't announce the number of people on the waitlist. It wouldn't do much but it would be nice to know. My guess is that a lot of the people who get in OU will also get into OSU so there's probably a huge waitlist.

I'm OOS. From Texas strong OK ties. MCAT 27 gpa 3.7
Finished my app and secondary sometime in July and has been silent since then...

Just would like to hear word of some sort ya know lol

I have a lower score (23) , 3.3 cGPA, 3.7sGPA, 5 years clinical experience, some research(not published), not sure what else is worth mentioning.

Is anyone already interviewed and waiting to hear back? Maghin had mentioned it would take a little bit longer to hear back because of her trip and spring break. Is OSU's spring break this week or next week?

Stats aren't big for this school. So don't worry too much about that. They are doing a huge minority push right now.
 
Huge minority push. HUGE. It's going to be the best minority push ever. Nobody does minority pushes better than OSU-COM. And we're going to get the minorities to pay for the minority push. It's going to be great.

But really, every med school actively recruits minorities. There's no extra campaign going on at OSUCOM more than any other year. And stats matter to every med school. Some place more emphasis on them than others, but they are important for all (Caribbean diploma mills being the exception).

The last regular interviews were today.
 
Can any accepted or current students tell me if they had to get the varicella vaccine or just prove immunity to it? I had chicken pox as a kid and really don't want to pay for the shots (they're 125$ a pop). I can't get ahold of anyone with an answer at the school
 
I worked at OSU and you do have to have a titer for proof of immunity or records of the shots. The titer is a little pricy also but it's just a one time test.

Don't pay for the titers, you get all that from the school in orientation week.

You are the only person I know of that is affiliated with OSU-CHS and denies the extra push for minority recruitment. I still text back and forth with a department chair from OSU-CHS (used to work with her) and I also have close friendships and close mentors who either OMS-IV or alumni and actively practice medicine in the Tulsa Metro area - all of those people pretty much agreed with that statement when I asked why they seemed to be recruiting differently this year (many more sub-par individuals this class). You can go to their website and even their Facebook and see exactly what I mean. They take pride in their diversity and they are trying to tackle the issue now more than ever.

I looked and did not see anything on their facebook suggesting extra recruiting to minorities. One health fair thing catered to minority participants was about it. Smith's Native explorers thing is to get Native American students interested in science fields, not just OSUCOM. Blue Coat to White Coat is honestly just going to make any class whiter lol. Of course there is recruiting catered toward URM applicants, I just don't know what additional programs you are speaking of.
What class is 'sub-par?' 2019 or 2020? I can tell you 2019 is certainly not sub-par and I don't know how someone could say 2020 is when they haven't stepped on campus yet. Remember that the Bridge program was halted when switching to the new curriculum, so having a handful of students with below average undergrad #s isn't something new--nor should it suggest they are 'sub-par individuals.'

lol if they were recruiting sub-par students, you would think I would have gotten in and not been waitlisted. 😉
 
From the catalog "students are expected to attend all lectures. . ." Are all lectures recorded? Does this mean attendance is mandatory?

All lectures are recorded. A few classes are mandatory, like OMM and clinical skills lecture/lab. Some professors (really only one) will have a quiz at the end of the lecture making it de facto required but that's really only one professor and they are supposed to tell you beforehand that there will be points for that lecture.
The recording software will mess up occasionally so don't get too dependent on it.

Are there students who never go to lecture? I'm just wondering if you know any students with that strategy. I don't think I would do that but I'd like the option at least. Thanks for answering my questions. I just got rejected from my state school so I'm coming to OSU for sure!

There are plenty of students who never go to lecture. I'd guess class is half full most of the time, but we're getting into a point in the semester where the level of care is rapidly approaching zero, plus the MS2s have more important things on the horizon.
You'll start out with everyone going to lecture then get adjusted to what best works for you. Some people at the top of my class never miss a class, some others at the top hardly ever attend lecture.
 
If there are any guys interested in sharing a two bed room apartment PM me. I need someone who is not going to break a lease because I don't want to have to move.

there is, but you have to be invited by the admin which took a little bit for me! Congrats!
 
for the first question of the secondary (asking about your current activities), did y'all just basically state them in a paragraph, or did you expand on them by explaining in detail what the activities were and how you've learned from them?

I am currently working so I basically outlined my job duties. If you're taking classes or something I would definitely put that down.
