Hi everyone!

Very grateful to have received acceptances from OUWB and Quinnipiac this cycle but am having trouble finalizing my decision on where to attend. I'm also waitlisted at VCU and I loved my interview day there but I don’t know if I’ll end up getting an acceptance from them.

Anyways, for OUWB vs. Quinnipiac… OUWB is offering me a half tuition merit scholarship which would be a little over $100k over 4 years. I had a wonderful time at my interview at OUWB and really enjoyed seeing the campus and the hospital. I think OUWB definitely has the opportunity for better hospital rotations at Beaumont plus the scholarship is very enticing. The main thing that pulls me toward Quinnipiac is the location. I’m from CA and am not sure if I’m ready for the cold winters of Michigan. I also enjoyed my interview day at Quinnipiac and felt that I could fit in well. If I attended Quinnipiac, I would most likely live in New Haven and being in between Boston and NYC would be great especially because I have friends/family in both cities. Living in New Haven is more appealing to me than living in a suburb outside of Detroit but I know I need to weigh more than location when making this decision. I should also say that I would prefer to return back to CA for residency and don't intend to go into something very competitive. What do you all think?

Also, I loved the culture at both schools and the facilities were great. I am unable to attend the Second Look days for both schools because I’ll be out of the country. Is it worth asking Quinnipiac if they can match OUWB’s scholarship offer?

Thanks for your help!!

CT also has cold winters.

I agree. It may be around seven or eight degrees warmer in New Haven than in Detroit on a given day, but it certainly won't feel like Cali 😉

Are the curriculum requirements/styles of each school factoring into your choice? Looking on the OUWB forum, it seems like a few incoming students are not too happy about the 70% attendance policy.

I would go with the scholarship unless prices are fairly similar overall. You're going to be dealing with winter in either spot, so I wouldn't consider that too much. It's nice that you may be able to make weekend trips to NYC or Boston every once in awhile, but as you move on in the years, you won't have as much time to do so, does it really make sense to choose a school b/c you will be able to visit places maybe a handful of times per year? And if you do well in school you should have a shot at matching back to california from either school.

Haha you're right about it not feeling like Cali 🙂 I guess a few degrees won't make a difference.

The curriculum at OUWB includes things like TBL, a capstone project, PRISM (Promoting Reflection and Individual growth through Support and Mentoring), 70% attendance policy to qualify for Honors, and 5 weeks off for USMLE review in year 2. OUWB starts off with anatomy and biomedical foundations courses and then goes into a block system. I'm not bothered by the attendance policy 🙂 [http://wwwp.oakland.edu/medicine/curriculum/about/]

Netter's curriculum includes the MeSH (Medical Student Home) program in which students are matched with a local practicing physician, a capstone project, and early clinical experience in a primary care setting. Netter has an emphasis on primary care. Netter has an integrated block system throughout the first two years. [http://www.quinnipiac.edu/academics...nts/school-of-medicine/academics/md-program/]

Overall I like things about the curriculum at both schools and am not really bothered by anything in either of them. So it is a factor but it's not swaying me toward either side.

Thank you for your input! According to their websites, Netter's price would be $325,115 for 4 years and OUWB's would be $309,825 for 4 years without the scholarship. With the scholarship it would be $209,825...

Bump. Facing a similar decision but without any scholarship from OUWB or QPAC. Just a few of my pro's and con's: I liked both schools, but preferred Connecticut to Michigan. I don't think the 70% mandatory attendance for honors policy at Oakland would optimize my learning but was really impressed with the WB hospital and think the clinical training would be better at OUWB. QPAC is true P/F year 1+2. Both faculty seem very supportive but (another intangible) I felt like I gelled more with the people at QPAC. Oakland has a more diverse patient population, but I felt like QPAC had a more diverse student body from what I could tell from interview day. Oakland has a few classes matched already, QPAC is matching their first next year. Anyone with inside opinions at either schools able to chime in?

I would say Oakland. It is cheaper. And having that academic hospital and the resources of Oaklaned will really help in attaining your long term careers goals

Not sure if either one of you have made up your minds.. I'm just finishing up my first year here at Netter.

I cant speak to the quality of rotations here since I havent completed them. I wont lie to you, I wish we had a hospital, its the one thing about netter I dont like since it would be very nice to have home residency programs. That being said, being so close to Yale actually mitigates this in a few ways. With a little bit of proactivity (reaching out to faculty there) Yale affords many opportunities for research and great professional connections. I'm doing research there this summer as a post-graduate fellow and have built relationships with Yale faculty in my desired specialty.

Also, the P/F factor is huge. It really has allowed me to tailer my learning to the topics that I consider most important without stressing about getting honors and has also allowed me the time to pursue research projects with my "free" time.
