After being associated with multiple of those schools, I would argue that ranking them is highly subjective. Tiers are more appropriate.

Tier 1 - Baylor, UTSW
Tier 2 - UTH, TT-Lubbock, UTMB, UTSA
Tier 3, Texas A&M, TT-el paso, TCOM

There is a previous thread where I detailed my thoughts.

Can you direct us to this thread? I would love to see your thoughts.

Okay, so I have a somewhat off topic question, but I don't want to start a new thread and since a bunch of ya'll know about Texas medical schools maybe ya'll could help.

So lets say I don't pre-match at UTSW and UTH and on my match list I put UTH as 1st and UTSW as 2nd, and I happen to match with UTH on match day. Would I be out of the running for UTSW completely?

Another question:

If I were to put UTSW 1st and UTH 2nd, and happened to match at UTH, but then later along the line I got an acceptance from UTSW would I automatically be withdrawn from UTH acceptance?

If you are accepted after the match, you have your choice. In your scenario, you would get to pick between Houston and UTSW.

Okay cool, thanks!
I wish the Texas didn't even have a match sometimes.

Just curious, why is everybody putting UTH ahead of UTMB? Does it mainly have to do with location?

To start with: I attend UTH, so I'm (probably) biased, though I like to think of myself as impartial.

My reasons: hospital quality, location, finances of school.

Anyways if I have to rank UTSW=Baylor>>UTH>UTMB>>UTSA>>>Lubbock=A&M=El Paso

To add onto that, there's a general perception that UTMB still hasn't recovered from Hurricane Ike (whether or not the school will ever completely recover from the hurricane is a different story, and it depends on who you ask).

This is why rankings are partially subjective. With the influx of money after Ike to rebuild, many facilities at UTMB are nicer than ever before. Some of the money has allowed utmb to expand clinics into multiple nearby cities. This provides excellent outpatient training in brand new facilities. Many of the residency programs are competitive. Many are more competitive than UT-H. Some are not. The inpatient experience is still rebuilding a little.

I would agree that Houston is a better city than Galveston. You also don't have to worry as much about hurricanes in Houston. The fast growth at utmb will also increase commuting. You need a vehicle at utmb. Public transportation is not sufficient.

UTMB took over parts of St Joseph in Houston and work at MD Anderson in Houston as well.

There are a few things that UT-H does better and a few that UTMB does better. It really depends on your interests and personality.

Thank you everybody! I definitely agree I would enjoy living in Houston more than Galveston. And Texas Medical Center is amazing 🙂

Do you happen to know if Baylor has posted their match list anywhere?
It's really hard for me to make a comparison between the two schools in terms of residency placements if there aren't two lists to compare

In 2011, UTSW matched ~46% of their students to OOS residencies, compared to ~50% for BCM, which is a small enough difference that I wouldn't immediately discount UTSW's reach compared to Baylor. The most popular OOS residencies for UTSW students appeared to be Case Western (7) and Barnes-Jewish (6).

If you've been accepted to BCM you can contact them and they are more than happy to give you their match list. I'm not sure if they'll send it to you if you aren't accepted yet but it never hurts to ask.
