Rowan University (RowanSOM) Discussion Thread 2015 - 2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Lol i thought if you didn't get a phone call by the friday you were cooked? I also interviewed that day as well.

It's the first I've seen on any Rowan thread that someone got accepted through email and not by phone...

They did mention on my acceptance letter that they were revamping the online portal.

Sooo a friend of mine that attends Cooper gave me some news today that I want to share with you all. I really don't know what to make of it. Allegedly, Dean Cavalieri is very de$perate to start an additional location for Rowan in New Jersey. Over the summer, he approached New Jersey Institute of Technology with the proposal. Apparently, NJIT approved the measure but, because Rowan is a state school, the governor's office rejected funding because North Jersey already has a saturation of medical schools and Rowan wasn't able to prove sufficient clinical partnerships in the North Jersey. Seton Hill is also planning on enrolling a medical school class in the next year (North Jersey). Well, my friend said that Dean Cavalierei has now approached Atlanticare, a hospital network in Southeastern Jersey, to be the site of a new branch campus for Rowan. Besides RowanSOM, Cooper and Rutgers send students there for rotations. Rowan already has appealed to COCA for a planned class size increase for the main campus. Given the lax measures COCA has for branch campus accreditation, this will likely be approved in months if Atlanticare and the state of NJ give the green light. Do any current students know about this? What's your take on it? This would be the sixth medical campus in the state with a population of 9 million and could have an impact on saturating the state with more medical schools with little changes in Graduate Medical Education.

I checked my portal, and Rowan uploads all the documents you mail to them, including your school transcripts that are required upon matriculation. If you want to make sure RowanSOM receives your documents, you can check the portal there. It took about two weeks after mailing the forms to appear on the RowanSOM portal.

Once you're placed on the alternate list are you supposed to call or do anything special or just wait?

anyone get pulled off the alternate list yet?

Hey! Movement on the list typically occurs later in the cycle after they're done interviewing. This is around middle of April! When it does move, there is usually good movement from the alternate list to being accepted.

Hang in there and good luck!

Hey! So you can send any updated grades or new MCAT scores if you have them. The list is not ranked until interview season is over, but these are the only two things that can make any difference where you stand on the list. Otherwise, unfortunately, it's a waiting game.

Take care and good luck!

where did you hear this?

So all they care about at this point is GPA? Then why do they have a place for us to provide update letters?

what is the difference between alternate list and waitlist?

Thanks! So are you saying that the waitlist is ranked by mcat/gpa only?

Hey! I suspect that's for people without interviews who can send update letters to add to their application.

Once in waitlist, only grades or MCAT changes can change your position on the list.

Hope that helps!

Hey! So no, it's based on your entire application, including your interview. However, once on the list, the only thing that can change your position on it is GPA and MCAT.

Take care!

Don't forget we are a state school, running on state dollars. Just like with public undergrads, if the state pressures a school to bring in more students, they have no more options than to do so since that is where the funding is coming from. The school IS considering expanding the class size next year on campus because we are taking over a whole building on campus that we didn't used to have access to (it belonged to UMDNJ PT program but now that they are Rutgers they will be moving to the Rutgers-Camden campus). That building will be for PBL and there are plans to hire several more professors to account for this.

Plus it'll be nice to have some new study spaces on campus 🙂

Do you know if PBL is more effective than the traditional lectures held at Rowan? If you were to do it again, would you have chosen PBL?

I think they are both equally effective. Everyone learns differently. There are definitely some classmates on either end of the decision (in PBL or in lecture) that probably wish they did the other one now. I personally find that I benefit most from reviewing material on my own first and then being able to go into a lecture and use what the professor's say to review/help me choose what is most important to study. This is not a strategy that would work well with PBL. I will say that the PBL students have a little more flexibility with their time, which is cool. But I'm happy with the decision I made

Thank you for the info!

I just got an interview invite and scheduled it for january 8. Secondary received 11/2. Application complete 11/9 and interview invitation 12/11. OOS student.

How much do students refer to their textbooks for learning versus a coursepack or other methods or resources (electronic files, etc.)?

Alternate list. Still stoked cuz this is my first choice and there's hope.

Does anyone know if the committee is meeting today?

It depends on the class but mostly I use what the professors provide. I like the books for histology, OMM & anatomy because they have more pictures. But overall I haven't spent much money on books.

The wait for the interview is so nerve racking. I don't know what to do!! Ughhh

congratulations! if you don't mind me asking when did you interview?

First week of December

How was the interview?? What did they ask ? Who did you interview with ? And what are your stats ?

It was really conversational and laid back! Asked me general questions (why DO, tell me about yourself, etc.). IS 3.5/33

Thanks for the help. Hope I don't bomb the interview next month.

With those stats you should be getting some love from MD schools, especially NJ state schools.

MCAT averages went up by a point for this school between 2014 and 2015's incoming class. I've noticed it increased from 28 to 29. It's now updated on Rowan's admissions site. I expect the averages are now hovering around 29.5-30.

Before anyone's interview did you get a confirmation call from the admissions staff about a specific interview time slot? I read it on the interview day information on the portal but haven't received a phone call and my interview is tomorrow. I called the office but no one is answering either!
