I am torn between Stony Brook and Wake Forest for medical school. It seems like SB students have better step 1 scores in recent years, and the medical school just received a huge grant I guess. But my interview day at WF was WAY more positive, and it just seemed like a great program/location. Any comments from people who know about either school would be greatly appreciated!

Are you in-state at Stony Brook? That's the only reason I can think of to choose it over Wake if you liked Wake better. I think Step 1 scores are useless in choosing a med school. You're responsible for your own score, the schools all teach the same basic material.

IMO this is pretty easy decision as the schools are very different. Do you want to live in the South? Winston-Salem is really quiet if you're coming from a big city.

The cost won't be that different from each other. At Wake Forest COA is 60k a year, Stony Brook IS is 50k a year. WFU is more likely to give grants.

I am IS, but tuition isn't really what I'm concerned about. I just want to go to the program that will prepare me best!

you should go where you feel more comfortable since you'll be spending at least 4 years there.

True. I guess I want to hear more about the grading systems, competition levels, etc. I read somewhere that SB recently changed the grading system for next year, but I can't confirm it on their website/in the information provided at the interview.

Don't judge a school by Step 1 scores....doesn't really mean much. A lot of that information is inaccurate anyway. Which school do you think you will be more comfortable at? Which environment will be more conducive to your future success?

You'll be prepared and trained adequately at every medical school, and you are largely responsible for your own Step 1 score.

You should be concerned with tuition--finances should play some role in making your decision. If the price difference is negligible, it'll honestly come down to location/culture preference.
