Thanks for the info. I called my insurance to see if they would cover it, and they said they only cover post-exposure treatments...real smart, huh? I'll give the Knox County Health Dept. a call and see if I can just drive down to get the shots.

So I'm trying to plan everything (I'm a BIG planner!). How is the UT student health insurance? Someone mentioned on the rabies vx thread that their student health insurance didn't cover some pretty major stuff. Just don't know if I'd be better off in the long run with student coverage or with BCBS🙄

Also, what about federal loan amounts? As an IS student would I still be able to take out the max ($40,500) every year if I needed to? Not saying that I'm GOING to 😉 just want to make sure I can if I need to.

Thanks all!!!

So the student health insurance costs about $1000/year and is pretty comprehensive. you have to go to the UT student health services during their hours but if they aren't open and you need to go in, your ER expenses are covered at UT. If you need a referral or to see a specialist, you need to go through the student health services, too. Referrals typically cost $60 on co-pay. I think you can also add a dental plan for about $80. Student health services here includes a separate vaccine clinic which is reasonably priced as are all the labs that you may need. There is also an attached radiology lab if you need those for some reason.

Due to recent health concerns, I've had to use my insurance a lot this month. Having the ER available for free on the weekends is really nice. It certainly makes things a lot cheaper. They've covered everything so far. If you want more info, I'd be happy to talk about it in a PM (I know I still owe you a PM about the dissection kit, but I haven't been able to get an answer from the bookstore and I'm probably not going to be in until Tues or Weds).

As for loans, you can take out the full amount each year, but I believe there is a limit of $138K that you can have out in total, so you can't go past that amount. Don't forget that between 3rd and 4th year you have to pay to go to school during the summer. It hasn't been easy for all of my classmates when they realized this.

Is the "summer" semester of rotations the same cost as a normal semester? I was thinking about taking out 1/6 of the cost extra each semester and stashing it, so that when that extra semester shows up out of no where the money is there. I seem to remember one of my friends mentioning that atleast for her year the financial aid didn't come out until the normal fall reimbursement time so that summer semester is on your own dime.

I think it costs a few hundred less than a normal semester. And financial aid covers it to a certain point (they only allow you to take a certain amount). I believe it comes out of a special area of staffords for summer tuition, so it doesn't come from Fall of the next semester or Spring of the semester before. It does, however, affect the total amount of staffords you can have. I believe technically, it counts as aid for the Fall and Spring that come before it, but I'm not sure that really means anything.

I think you'd be better off just taking it when it came instead of saving loans to take it. You'll have less interest later, and if you really need more help, you can take more money out for the Spring semester before and use that.

I hope that made some sense.

For our class (2013) they told us they wanted us to have the Rabies series done or in progress before we started classes. They said there was some leniency about it, if you really couldn't get it done in time, but it was highly suggested.

I just sent in my response to Dean Brace.. hopefully one of you guys will now come off the waiting list! Good luck this week. 🙂

AULabLover, have you declined your alternate spot at Mississippi?

This is for all the alternates out there. I spoke to Mrs. Shepherd this morning. She said that after the 15th, all the alternates are reevaluated, which is why we are not given a rank...which is not awesome for me. But after the 15th, we can email Dr. Brace to get a good idea of where we stand when we are reevaluated. gggrrrrr

Has anyone else gotten their award summary from UT? Mine is only for $20,500 which is the max for non-health professions. I'm going to talk to Fin. Aid on Monday to see what's up. Hopefully it's a really easy fix so that I don't have to stress about trying to work more during school (and this summer!!!) than I already plan to.

They do that every year. Its somewhere much higher than that - somewhere over the 30k/year mark. I wouldn't stress out too much

As an OOS student I ended up with just over 40K in eligible loans, which was only ~ 2K short of full coverage, so there'll be plenty, don't worry!

LOL Thanks!! I was just looking at their numbers and 😱! As an IS student they figure it'll cost me over $38k per year, I'm supposed to "contribute" $6k, and they've awarded me $20k. GULP!! I know that I won't need all of that $12k they think I need, but knowing that I won't be on a crazy tight budget and have to work extra makes me feel much better😉

Has anyone else heard....well, anything from UT? I haven't gotten a single drop of info from them since the acceptance letters went out and it's starting to make me kinda freaked. I sent them my return "yes, I want my spot" letter, and I'm done with the FAFSA and all that. I'm making the assumption that Dean Brace's comment about contacting you if they hadn't heard from you by the 15th is true, and that I would have heard something if my letter got lost in the mail, but still.....ack!

Also, did you just send your Fafsa to the plain old UTK code, Highlsnds? I didn't see a special code for the vet school, but if there was one then I need to call them.

High --> I totally understand! Stupid money, lol!

Kat --> I wouldn't worry too much. I don't remember getting anything after my confirmation until the big packet of info in the summer. Plus, I didn't even know I had an interview until Deb Shepherd called to check on it! If they would call to ask about a missing interview confirmation, I'm sure they'd call about a missing acceptance confirmation!

And grats guys! But be forewarned, this is just the beginning of all the worry & panic, lol 😉

Edit: Oh, & Kat, maybe High will have a more certain answer, but I seem to remember there being a dif Fafsa code, but that could have been for OSU, so call & check before you panic if High doesn't know for sure

Hey, for all of y'all still trying to figure out rabies vaccines for UT. I called today and they will be available through the student health center at UT, but you need to call ahead and order them, they're $214 a pop. Also, if you are planning on signing up for the student health insurance through the school, the insurance plan will cover part of it.

I did not find any different codes for the vet school, so I just put down regular UT. They do have all of my tuition and fees correct.

I actually called the school a couple of weeks ago just to make sure they got my letter accepting my spot, didn't want to take the chance it got lost in the mail either😉

I plan on getting the student insurance, but you have to pay for the whole year up front, so I won't be doing that for a while.

Awesome, so they probably have it. Now I just have to convince myself to be a good little person and not call the admissions office every day just to make sure this is real. 😀

Hello all--congratulations to those who were accepted! I received my letter a couple of weeks ago informing me I was accepted into the Class of 2014! But I only recently discovered these forums. 🙂

Welcome to SDN and UT! 😀

Hey, just has a question for any other alternates out there, has anyone heard anything from UTK about the waitlist or heard anything from your friends that on the waitlist but aren't on here? I emailed Dr. Brace on monday asking what my status was on the waitlist and haven't heard back from him yet. hope someone is having better luck than I am.

Does the vet school use the Turning Point "response card" clicker in any of the classes? Just need to know if I should sell mine back after my Biochem final tomorrow! Thanks.

I am in the process of finishing first year (ick, finals), and the only clickers that we have used have been provided by the school during lecture/lab. I'm going to assume it's the same for years two and three....

Great! Thanks, I could sure use the $.50 that the bookstore will give me for the $30 clicker I only used 1 semester😉

Any chance you're in BCMB 401 with Jain and Binder?

OMG yes!! Is your brain about to explode too??? A friend and I were just talking about the final. We figure only about 25% of it will be Dr. Jains material (half of the comprehensive), which makes me feel better because I can't seem to remember ANY of the stuff from his study guide!!

Haha, my brain exploded about 2 days ago. I do much better on Dr. Binder's material as opposed to Dr. Jain's. I don't know if he is just a better teacher or if Dr. Binder's material is easier. Good luck tomorrow!!

Thanks you too!!! I'm just hoping that whoever got the 13 on the last test shows up to take the final!!! Maybe with a few friends😀

Yeah, you won't need your own clicker for UTK

I assume you are talking about the email with your netID and everything? I looked at the circle park online thing, but I don't have courses, nor a date to register listed yet. I'm assuming that'll be in Dean Brace's June package.

I'm assuming you aren't currently a UT student? I'm an undergraduate here, and I've already been registered through CPO for the first semester of vet classes. I think the vet school admins themselves must have done it, because I didn't. It may take longer though if you are coming in from another school.

I feel out of the loop. I've still received a big fat nothing from UT by way of what comes next. Why does UT not love me????

Katryn, you may want to check with Cynthia Davidson, she's the one that sent out the email.

BomberCanoe, you must go to Circle Park Online, enter your NetId and password (after you get it set up), click on the "I have read and understand the date deadlines" button, on the next page you select "Fall 2010 TERM" directly under the red banner, the next page has the sched. for Fall. On the far left, in the column under "Fee Functions" you must select confirm attendance, on the next page you set your confirmation to YES.

It's a lot of steps, but it gave me a warm fuzzy when I finished 😀

Highlands, thanks for the help! I didn't want to click that I understood all the deadlines, as the whole page was a little overwhelming. But now i have courses....with no actual times! At least now I have a concrete date that my debt starts by (August 11th!). Its definitely all starting to feel real now!

LOL I know how you feel! I just finished my Biochem at UT and never could make head or tails of their dates deadline!

One thing the first year who gave us the tour on interview day said was that our semester would be completely unlike what we were used to. We may have X class 4 days one week, then only once the next. Every week was different. It'll be very interesting!!

Yay, I'm offically offical. >< Turns out they were sending the email to my old utk email address that I haven't used since I graduated 3 years ago. Glad I called and got everything sorted out.

And I agree Highlsnds3, it gave me definite warm fuzzies to confirm my attendance. 😀

Congrats everyone! I just confirmed my acceptance, so I'll be at UTK in the fall, too!! Can't wait to hear some more information...

100% true... I literally had to check my schedule every night to see what to get ready for the next day cuz there is nothing even resembling a pattern, lol. As a note though, I thought it would drive me crazy going in, but it really didn't end up bothering me.

Also, Wooo! Here's to making it through finals! (With a kidney stone in tow the WHOLE time!).

OUCH!!!! So feelin' your pain!

I'm actually REALLY looking forward to the non-schedule, though I may start having dreams again where I get to school and don't know which class I'm supposed to be going to😉

lol yeah... I really wish it could have been considerate enough to wait a week, lol! And luckily except for labs, we're in the same class all day & the teachers just swap.. so worst is generally not having the right notes. I woulda been so screwed if I had to remember what room to go to every morning at 8am, hehe.

What time do classes typically start/end? Are we talking 8-5 and the lecture subject order is just ever changing, or different times every day on top of a different lecture subject order every day? I find the flex schedule set up intriguing, but it'd be nice to know just how flex it is beforehand.

Most of our first year was classes from 8-12, with labs a few days after lunch. Some days had a class or two after lunch, but usually on days we didn't have labs after. All in all it's pretty variable, but luckily not every day was an 8-5.

You can definitely count on 8-12 as an everyday thing. The afternoon varies....sometimes you have lab till 4 or 5, sometimes you have lectures till 2, 3, or 4, and sometimes you get super lucky and get out at 12. So, basically, classes change everyday, as well as the times. Clear as mud, right? However, the school gives you a day-by-day schedule at the beginning of every semester, so it shouldn't ever be a surprise. lol

If this link works, it's the First Year spring schedule, just to give you an idea.

Yep, it works, we just have to put in our netid and password (same as for Circle Park). I think I'm in love😍 The schedule looks awesome!

That is made of win. 😍 I really think I could gladly give up summer weather to start classes now. 😛 And that's saying something for me, I'm addicted to temperatures over 85 degrees.

I just signed up for VIN and got accepted. Just wanted to let you all know in case you want to sign up too!
