University of North Texas (UNTHSC/TCOM) Discussion Thread 2014 - 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Nope. Congrats! According to last years thread, you (and who ever gets the status change) should be getting phone calls today, maybe tomorrow about your interview.

Does it say that on your TMDSAS primary or is that on you secondary through the UNT system?

The status change will be seen on the TCOM website. The same place where you filled out your secondary.

So when you click on applicant status? I just didn't see a spot for it?

Yes, that same spot. When you click on applicant status, sorry cell posting and I can't bring the site up, underneath the boxes where it lists a bunch of info - it says "application is complete" those words will change to "invited"

Nope my status changed about a week ago and I havent gotten a call yet.

Congrats! That is awesome that you will be interviewing so early! When were your dates for TMDSAS submission/verification/secondaries?

TMDSAS submission: 5/24
Verification: 5/27
Secondary (complete with all letters): 6/05

Oh man, I'm sorry TexasMeds. That's what the users said last year. Have you been able to call admissions yet to see what they said?

Hey guys! I'm kind of confused about something and was hoping you all could help. I sent my LORs through TMDSAS... do I have to send them again through the TCOM secondary?

No, not unless you are sending the "additional letter" they allow you to provide if you wish.

Well congrats and good luck! I sent my TMDSAS application in on 6/15 and my secondary in on 6/22. So I am probably still 2 weeks away from them receiving it all. Hoping to be invited to that first cycle of interviews.

Thank you pellagr1!

Do you guys think I should wait to submit my secondary after I get my MCAT scores early July?

Also good luck to all of you 🙂

I would just start working on it to at least make sure that your secondary is in when your MCAT gets in! If you are satisfied with your secondary responses, might as well submit it early if you can. If not, sleep on it and look at it again the next day for more revision. Good luck to you as well! Hopefully you smoked that MCAT!

Wondering if I would be considered with 4.0/26. TCOM seems awesome. 😍

250 hrs/4 months of scribing in the ER
100 shadowing hours (MD)
Office assistant at a pediatric primary clinic
Various academic recognitions and scholarships
2 solid LOR (non-committee); no DO letters though
Planned volunteering to begin in august (already set up)
Currently a senior engineering major

Do we need a physician letter for TCOM? I looked on their website but didn't see anything mentioned... ?

I applied with a cGPA: 3.95, sGPA: 3.9 and MCAT: 27. I'm an IS reapplicant, but my first time applying here.

I have 200+ hours shadowing in a rural area, some volunteering with more planned and started, significant leadership, and currently working in a rural ER.

This is my absolute top choice because of the rural/primary care here, so what do y'all think my chances are?

Can I submit the secondary to TCOM while my TMDSAS application is still processing?

Also what are my chances with 27 MCAT, BCPM GPA 3.44 and overall GPA 3.65. I have hundreds of hours in research, extracurriculars, and shadowing.

I think your chances are good, assuming no red flags and you don't blow the interview. BTW rural med is not a bad gig - rural docs I know tell me they have a pretty nice lifestyle. Clinical training for rural med at TCOM is top-notch, and the program is quite popular (when TCOM opened a housing facility for rotating students in East Texas, Rick Perry himself showed up to cut the ribbon).

From what I can see here, there's nothing that would keep you from getting an interview. I hope you put some effort into their secondary because they seem to take them pretty seriously. Your gpa makes up for your mcat somewhat. No guarantees obviously.

Thanks. I hope you're right. Definitely took the secondary seriously. Signed up for an mcat retake so hopefully I'll do better this time.

I'd say go for it. Your GPA is just about their average, but your MCAT sure looks good and if you are invited for an interview looks like you have experiences that could be a good conversation pieces. Apply early and see what happens!

Thanks JeBrAs! =) We'll see what happens UNT is an awesome program!

3.3sgpa 3.4 cGPA 31 Mcat.OOS. Any chance?
I would say your chances are as good as mine considering you are coming out of California. If your UCSD im sure your gpa will be looked at with a little more weight than mine will.

If I am submitting a DO letter, should I mail it directly to TCOM or request it as one of the additional letters on TDMSAS? I should mail it directly right because if I add it to TMDSAS, then the other TMDSAS med schools will also receive the DO letter too? Can someone confirm this for me? Also, can I start on the secondary before my TMDSAS is submitted?

Sorry, but can someone post up the secondary prompts? I can't seem to find it anywhere on SDN and would like to get started early. Thanks!!!!

1) In your own words, explain the concept of osteopathic medicine as you understand it. (1000 Characters or less)
2) What experiences and/or relationships have motivated you toward a career in osteopathic medicine? (1000 Characters or less)
If you attended more than two colleges/universities, explain why.
If applicable, please update the information contained on your TMDSAS application.
List any family that are DOs.
MCAT scores, optional extra letter from DO.

I am set to take the July 12 MCAT. This test will be a retake. I submitted my TMDSAS application a little over a week ago; will TCOM wait for my new score to be submitted (in mid-August) before processing my application?

From my understanding, if you have released your score then they will evaluate you based on what they have and decide whether or not they can offer an interview with your current score, if not, then they set your application to the side until you get your new scores.

I am in a very similar position, got a 26 the first time, decided to retake July 25th but my app is currently under review at multiple Texas schools with my current score.

Congrats! Do you mind sharing your stats?
I'm slightly above their average accepted oGPA & sGPA stats from Fall 2013
MCAT low thirties, OOS, good ECs but yours are better imo

Does anyone know if OMM lab is once or twice a week? I was looking at the Year 1 curriculum and starting from August it seems that the lab is twice a week. I may be interpreting it incorrectly so I apologize in advanced.

http://web.unthsc.edu/info/200812/tcom_medical_education/3006/tcom_2014-2015_course_calendars
Incoming student here. Evidently the curriculum is changing for our class so no one really knows. But from the calendar, it seems as though lab is usually twice a week, except for exam weeks which have zero or one OMM lab.

If you are applying this cycle, I really wouldn't worry about it. Things like location and cost are far more important considerations than how often OMM lab occurs.

Good luck to all you applicants!

Hey guys, I have a question about reapplying. I am a re applicant to TCOM and I have finished all of my new information for TMDSAS. I am ready to submit within this week. All of my TMDSAS essays have been revamped and changed to show my new experiences. Now I understand that the TCOM secondary essays have remained the same, so should I changed those essays as well? My views toward osteopathic medicine remain the same, if anything I was able to add one more DO to the list of physicians that are wrote me rec letters. Advice? I don't want to change something, if it already states how I feel but then again I don't want them to think I have no grown.

Hey Starry, I was wondering if you mentioned location and cost during your interview. These things do matter to me but I don't want to come off being too concerned in material affairs.

Everyone already knows about the low cost of attendance for TX schools so I didn't mention that.

Location is a valid concern, especially if you are married or have kids. It doesn't hurt to mention connections to the area.

Hey guys,
About how long did it take after that application status states "application is complete" for you to get invited to an interview? Mine just changed to application is complete and am just curious what time frame I should anticipate... that is if I get an interview.
-IS MCAT 31 GPA 3.96, I hope I do, this looks like an amazing school!

TCOM actually has a page specifically addressing reapplicants. Its on the main unthsc website. From what I remember they do advise changing them up but check it out, I may be wrong.

Here is the link:
Demonstrating No Improvement from Last Year's Application
If you were unsuccessful in your previous application, you should evaluate how to improve your future application. On the TMDSAS application, there is space to answer what you have done to improve your application from the previous year. Do not leave this question blank. If you have nothing to add, then you should be concerned about how your reapplication will be perceived by the medical schools.
http://web.unthsc.edu/info/200679/admissions_and_outreach/1554/information_for_reapplicants/2

I don't think you need to change your secondary essays.

The OMM schedule is variable because they work it around the systems classes which are more important. The time commitment was maybe ~3 hrs/week in my 1st year. It was the easiest class to pass.
