University of North Texas (UNTHSC/TCOM) Discussion Thread 2014 - 2015

Thanks for calling penny15! Wow, I can't believe all OOS spots have been filled already. When I met with the admissions counselor at the end of my interview day, he told me that we still had a good chance even though we interviewed in early October. He told me that the OOS spots would most likely not be filled in November so we should find out 4-5 weeks about our decision post-interview. But I guess it's not the case this year... 🙁
It's a little bit frustrating! I feel like our only shot was either wait list or a rejection...but I have no idea how much the wait list moves here so I'm not sure if this is bad news or not.

Does anyone know when pre-match offers are delivered? Will letters arrive at our homes on November 15th or will it be a little after that considering that it is snail mail?

I always assumed it was email? It's an actual letter?!

Hey so I am an OOSer and I just called Caroline to figure out why I haven't heard back about my status. So basically she said all of the spots for OOSers have been handed out so I am on the wait list and they are waiting for people from OOS to accept or decline their offers before they accept any other OOSers. I hope this helps other people in my situation. She also said that they let people know right away if they have been declined. So prolonged silence means wait list is what I got out of that conversation.
So I am assuming if I haven't got an interview now, that means it's rejection? Was really hoping to get at least an interview, but I applied too late so...

I wouldn't assume that yet, maybe they have a really strange way of doing things...most schools usually have a good idea of how many people will turn down the offer so maybe they know a lot of OOSers will reject the offer so they keep interviewing? I really have no idea, just trying to be positive

There will always be complaints because medical students like to complain, but the survey results were actually pretty impressive. Keep in mind that since TCOM offers rotation sites in other cities like Houston, there are a bunch of students who try to grab these spots so they can spend 3rd year back home. I suspect some dissatisfaction comes from the students who can't get these spots due to their limited supply. I have heard a complaint about this, but it has nothing to do with overall rotation site quality/availability.

The former Medsci people l know said that rotations at TCOM were literally hassle free and the number one reason A FEW people didn't get their preferred spots in the timeframe they wanted was due to poor planning and procrastination or otherwise not paying attention to the deadlines which the school bent over backwards to extend for some students. As far as advising, they said they never encountered any problems. TCOM staff and faculty were extremely helpful and willing to share their knowledge and give them advice.

They do not, but there is a volunteer clinic that the students frequently help out in for hours, as well as other opportunities for medical volunteering

I'm confused. Someone posted if your application status says, "Your application has been received" that means you have been rejected. However, a more recent poster said it means your application is still under consideration for an interview. Which does it mean? Has anyone gotten an interview after having this status? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

I think if it says "Your application has been REVIEWED" then that means a rejection... Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

"Reviewed" not "received". App received just means what it implies.

I waited 9 weeks of silence before I received my II
Unfortunately I've been waiting like 12 weeks... pretty sure I've been rejected.

Has anyone had any success with writing a letter to the admissions committee expressing interest?

So, no in state people have received a rejection letter, right?

I know it's been a long-standing rumor here that "your application has been reviewed" means a rejection, but I know of people at TCOM who had their status change to that before they were accepted. My friend who is a TCOM student asked someone from admissions about that status and it simply means the admissions committee has finished reviewing the application and has made a decision to rank it or not. In other words, it could be an acceptance, waitlist, or rejection. I hope this gives some of you hope like it gives me. I share that same status right now.

I'm thinking the distinction would then depend upon whether you were interviewed or not. If your status switches to "reviewed," but you were never offered an interview, I think it's safe to assume that you were rejected. I don't work in the admissions office so this is just speculation.

I totally agree

When I wrote the guide to the portal statuses, it was in regards to those who have interviewed and applied mainly to post-match statuses; they may have changed things 🙂

Also, congrats to those OOS peeps who were accepted! TCOM is a pretty great place, and you all will do well!
For those who worry about their chances (such as myself) and want to get a nice leg up, check out the MedSci program; its a pretty good program for prepping you for med school, plus you get an MS, which means more post-name tags! Any questions about anything, feel free to ask, and good luck on all of your midterms/finals!

Can current students comment on how easy it is for OOS students to qualify for in-state tuition? Thanks!

So what does the status Your Application is Complete Indicate? They never looked at it?

Congrats y'all!!!!! Still "under review" 🙁 Did they send out an email? or via status portal?

Can someone please explain to me how the pre match works for this school? If they offer you a spot during pre -match do you have to either accept or reject.. or would you hold on to it to see what happens during the match?

thank you

I was accepted last night and am so pumped. 3.8/30/IS interviewed 8/26. This is my first (albeit only) choice and I can't wait to take them up on the offer. Try to stay patient, all of you who are still waiting.

I know this sounds strange but the requirement is to get a scholarship of $1000+. This will qualify you for IS tuition. Most schools in Texas set aside money to guarantee OOS get in state tuition and I think on my interview day TCOM said they do the same. I interviewed on 8/9.

Can anyone comment on the ROME interviews? I applied specifically to that program and it is by far my first choice. Unfortunately, the GPA figured up by TMDSAS and the one for AACOMAS are drastically different and I fear I won't receive an interview here : ( This school is my heart and I live near it. I did 2 years as a scribe at Cook's in the ER and fell in love with some of the docs that came out of TCOM. Additionally, it is the ONLY 4 year rural medicine program in the U.S. I WANT IN SO BAD!!!!

If memory serves, all you have to do is fill out a form and get 2K.
I read from a post in one of the previous year's thread that this 2K is counted as a grant and not technically a scholarship. Therefore, this 2K won't allow me to qualify for IS tuition.

Are you sure this is true? I don't remember hearing this explicitly on my interview day. Can other applicants who have interviewed this year vouch for this? Thanks!

Haven't interviewed but I'm almost positive you're right- you'd need to receive a competitive scholarship to qualify IS tuition.

Hi everyone,
I had a question, I interviewed in early september. If I haven't heard about pre-match does that mean I probably won't get a prematch offer?

Thanks!

There's really no way to know. I think TCOM just ranks people as they interview them, and they work their way down the list, extending pre-match offers in batches (there were 2 or 3 dates last year). The majority of the class seems to get in through the match. I interviewed in August last year and matched on match day.

If your status still says you are "under review", this is a good sign, and you just need to hang in there.

The number of ROME students in the class is pretty small. Were you able to apply to ROME in addition to general admissions? Or do you have to pick one or the other?

I had to pick ROME program only...I wish applying to both had been an option...I have been in touch with their office for over a year expressing my desire to be there. Unfortunately, I am not nearly as competitive stat-wise as many of the other applicants commenting in this forum : (

Mind sharing stats? The program is probably pretty competitive since there are so few spots available.
