To be fair to the school:
1) The people you talk to on the phone may have no idea about how rejections are handled in terms of correspondence. In fact, my guess is that they're told explicitly to NOT tell anyone over the phone their statuses.
2) I'd bed that the same people do not realize that accounts are shut off in the case of rejections (if that IS the case). Thus, I'm guessing it's all automated so they don't have to deal with everyone's accounts at the end of the year. It probably saves them an INCREDIBLE amount of time... Which also probably results in us getting faster decisions in the long run, as they wouldn't necessarily have to clean up the mess after the interview season. Automation is the name of the game with schools getting thousands and thousands of applications.
All that to say, in all cases, we should be giving the schools the benefit of the doubt. They probably have other jobs and volunteer their time to help construct the medical school class. Our job is to be patient and recognize that we're fortunate to have the opportunity at all.
That being said, if the shutdown means a rejection, I wish you all the best of luck! It's a long, drawn out process that can yield a lot of frustration and demoralization... Trust me, I've gone through two of these before.
