Movement did start on Thursday; I got an acceptance call from the office from their alternates list, and my friend got accepted from the Hold for Spring list.

Hey Y'all,
I interviewed on March 17th and was initially put on the alternate list. I just got my acceptance and I'm pretty pumped. I am an out-of-state student from Michigan, and I am hoping to live off-campus (but close!) and achieve in-state residency after our first year. I'm looking for a roommate who would want to live near the campus, perhaps a few subway stops down the 2,5 line. I don't have anything picked out yet, but my summer is pretty flexible and I could fly out to choose an apartment sometime later in the summer. I'm 22 years old, entering med school right out of undergrad at the University of Michigan. I'm male, but have no preference in the sex of my roommate(s). I'm very, very clean and quite social. I don't plan on partying a ton (or at all?), of course, but I'm friendly and open to anyone. Yes, they leave you a message and ask you to call them back.

My stats were fairly average; I sent out 2 Letters of Intent, 2 updated CVs and 1 additional LOR after interviewing in mid-March.

Hi, all! I was accepted last week off WL. I had a hard time choosing between Stony Brook and DS, but I'm doing MD/MPH, a program which I loved and is ultimately why I picked DS. I'm taking the MPH classes this summer. Is anyone else doing this? I am looking for summer housing to share and hopefully keep into the school year. If you're interested in sharing, message me.

No!!!!!! Don't go into med school with this idea. Ok, fine, you shouldn't be partying "all the time" and if you just came from college, it'll probably be a step down in terms of that --- but DEFINITELY don't go into med school thinking your life is over and youll be huddled up in a dark room studying 24/7. There are times for that (like right now for me with Step 1 studying), but during 1st year especially, you should be enjoying any time off you have. After you finish an exam, go out and enjoy yourself (whether it be partying with your class, spending time with your S/O or family, etc.). Even go out the next weekend.


Just whatever you do, don't become an automaton while you're in school. It's an easy trap to fall in to. While watching Discovery Health the other day I heard a great line "We can't expect to take good care of our patients without taking good care of ourselves." Definitely work hard while you're here, but play hard too - your sanity depends on it.

i was wondering if there are people who'd like to share housing somewhere nice in brooklyn (park slope, prospect park etc.) i'll be a first year at ds next year and if time permits would like to go out partying as much as possible.

Is there an official date for WL and Hold movement? When does the school close their movement? I need to know when I can begin picking up the pieces and move on with my life.

Can someone explain to me how i can realistically answer this i mean, im interested in suny downstate and I can easily write something good about their why do you want to come here question but I am from california, I have no idea what NY is like, or even what the 5 boroughs are...am i just wasting my time applying here because of this? I have alot of different experiences but seriously, ive never been to NY or lived in a burrough....so how do i know what experiences prepared me for this?

I'm sorry you haven't heard back from downstate yet. I'm not sure if that's comforting or not because you probably want to start figuring out what you're going to do in the next year buuuuuut I got accepted off their waitlist mid July so there's hope yet!

Try thinking about the question another way. If you end up attending DS, you'll be removing yourself from the familiar environment of friends and family. How will you adjust? Have you ever lived abroad? Be creative.

It's not really about DS or even NYC. It's about you.

Just wanted to give others some hope by saying that I was put on "hold for spring consideration" back in October and I got the acceptance call this morning... Looks like they have made their way onto this list. Some other info, I sent updated transcripts and two letters of intent. Good Luck to everyone still waiting!

Hi! I was also accepted this afternoon. Interviewed September, HOLD in December, accepted today! I also sent in two letters of continued interest, via email. My stats are average.... Good luck
 
got accepted today as well, probably withdrawing tho so hopefully one of u will get my spot, good luck all those still waiting :luck:

Emailed the letters. As for my stats, just the regular volunteer and shadowing, minimal research, a few odd jobs, average mcat, and above average gpa.
 
Whats up Soljaboy, bruceaka and anyone else. Just got in to Downstate like 2 weeks ago and looking for some roomates who want to move into the park slope/prospect heights or lower manhattan area. Looking for laid back guys or girls looking to take advantage of any time not spent studying. I also put up a message on the facebook group. I've been working at Downstate and living in Manhattan this past year, and my sister lived in park slope for like 4 years so i know the areas well. Let me know if anyone's interested. i dont really use sdn too much so let me know at [email protected]
 
I emailed the Admissions Office yesterday to ask if there was any way to find out how many people were on the waitlist and what the chances were to get off of it since I just got accepted to Temple but would really prefer going to SUNY Downstate. They emailed back to say they would be doing more acceptance at the end of June and to expect to hear something then. (They actually said to expect a letter then but I thought they did their acceptances by phone, not sure what to make of this) But just wanted to update everyone who is still waiting, like me. Good luck everyone

Congrats on Temple, ginger! There are still people who are withdrawing, so keep your hopes up.
 
I have some questions for current students and accepted students that are from out of state. I just got into Downstate and I plan on living off campus for 12 months in order to qualify for in state tuition next year(soph year). Since my parents do not work in New York, they do not have have any NY income tax to report, so does that mean I must apply as an Emancipated student in order to get NY residency? And if that is the case, do I need to find a job in New York while I am in med school, so that I can report my NY state income taxes? My parents will be loaning me money to pay for school and rent, so as long as the money is in my bank account, does that mean I am financially independent (emancipated)?

Any help is appreciated, I'm sure I'm not the only one with this question!

I'm virtually 100% that you don't need a job while in med school to declare NY residency - just to have lived here (and not in the res hall) for a year. As far the declaring yourself independent, I'm not entirely sure on that. I *think* that my situation is exactly the same as yours (get some $ from parents and am declared as an independent) but I'm not entirely sure as my dad still files taxes for me.

To be sure, I'd call the financial aid office. They're really great here and I'm sure they can help elucidate these points. Either way, don't worry about having to maintain a job while in med school

To establish NYS residency for your 2nd year, get a NY license. You also don't have to live in the dorms to qualify for in state tuition. You can live off campus during the first year and still claim NYS residency. Good luck and congratulations.
 
On the SUNY residency application, they ask for my most recent federal and New York state income taxes... if I am to be a first year med student, I doubt I will have any taxes to report--so this could be a major hindrance.. any loopholes for this?

You're not an MS1 yet though, so did you file income taxes in 2008 or 2007?

As a side note, you actually CAN'T establish residency if you're out of state and live in the dorms. The school does not believe that living in the dorms constitutes an intent to live permanently in NY. It stinks, which is why I'm moving off campus. However, I'd still recommend dorm living as a first year.

Yes I filed taxes this year, but they were for the state of California (my home state) and they explicitly ask for New York state income tax. I called the office of admissions today, and how they explained it, is I need to be financially independent from my parents (pay all expenses with student loans) and so next April when I file taxes, it'll show the loan money I've been using. That establishes both emancipation and the income tax. (I also need 12 months of off-campus housing)

So this means you have to file tax returns even with no income? And that your parents can't claim you as a dependent this tax cycle?

How can you file income tax returns with no income? That doesn't make sense. So the loan will count as an income?

I wonder if it'd be easier just to get a part time job, like 10 hours/week and file the tax returns that way

You can file tax returns with no income or small income below the standard deduction. It just means that you are not required to file if you don't want to.

Well filing with no income is usually for financial aid purposes, not to get money back from the taxes you paid (which is zero). But yea it's kinda pointless since the school already knows how much money you take out for loans to pay for your living expenses.

Did you get in from WL or Holds? And if holds, could you give me an estimate of the date you were put on hold? I'm trying to figure out if they're reviewing the hold applicants in sequential order by date of the hold decision.

ok i dont remember the exact date for everything but here are the approximate times:

primary: mid-september
secondary: late novemer
interview: dec 11
put on hold: march? (not too sure but around then)
sent email to update spring grade: about a week ago

you prob shouldnt go by me....i have very good stats, im just a lazy bum who doesnt really care so i do things last minute
 
Did anybody else get an email about confirming your interest in being considered for a spot? I was put on hold in March after interviewing in January....
 
I just got that same email. I interviewed in March, and was put on hold beginning of May.

Just wish there was some way to know what the chances are. *sigh* Better start drafting my personal statement for next cycle.

Well I haven't officially decided but I'm leaning that way because I'm not sure I want to move to Philly, and even though it means another year, I'm hoping that I can get into UMass next year. I may be crazy but Temple was so expensive for out of state and I don't want to leave Boston. For SUNY though, I'd be down there in August no question. Now a year from now, I cannot tell you how much I will regret this decision if I don't get in anywhere but I'm hoping that won't be the case. Trust me I've struggled with this decision. Your thoughts?
 
I received the same email a month ago. After responding yes, they called me for an acceptance a few days afterwards. So maybe its good news?
 
hey guys quick question:

is there anyone that DIDNT get that email? Im trying to figure out what that email means for a friend
