I want to submit this secondary, but my essay for the "what does it mean to enter into a profession" essay is pretty terrible. I need to find a way to make it more meaningful instead of trying to sound philosophical in 1500 characters which obviously isn't working.

This is one of my least favorite secondary prompts.

Interview invite!

Finally! Probably my first choice school. I'm pumped.

I just got an invite, as well! Complete 8/19, Invite 9/10, Interview 9/24.

My invite's for 10/6. I wonder how they distribute people over the various dates. Randomly?

Invite today too! But I may have to reschedule.. Congrats everyone!

E-mail invites or phone? What dates was everyone complete that got an invite today? Thanks.

In-state. E-mail. Complete 7/23 maybe? That's when I turned all of my stuff in. Never got a 'complete' notification.

I am also in-state. I received a small letter in the mail letting me know my app was complete, and again once my in-state status was confirmed. Interview invite was by email.

This school is by far the most persistant school of all (a good thing). They sent me two secondary invite emails spaced 2 weeks apart. After I submitted, they sent me a mail (3 days after i submitted) confirming that they have received it and reminding me to submit my LOR (which I already did..)

Funny enough, I applied there as well and received none of those things; not even the in-state recognition letter that is refered to above. I actually had to call their office to make sure that I was considered a Maryland resident. Funny how different people have completely different application experiences.

I am an OOS too..they probably just want my money

does anybody know if we have to fill out the family section of the secondary? I'm not American so I can't even correctly choose the state of my families residences.

also, did anybody actually upload a picture of themselves...is this something we should do or rather, will it be frowned upon if we dont?

How was the interview experience at UMD for those that have had an interview there this cycle? Thanks.

Congratulations! My UMD interview is tomorrow so I'll report back here to let you know how it went. I'm a VA resident too!

I had to reschedule mine since I was out of town on the date they originally wanted me to interview. They ended up giving me my first choice for the rescheduled date. It was not a problem at all so I would request a reschedule and not worry about it. 👍

Good luck tomorrow. If any of the first/second years at lunch with you seem a little stressed, we both have a big exam coming up on Monday. Not that that should interfere with a simple lunch, but I've seen crazier things from some of my classmates.

A piece of advice: Blackened Chicken sandwich.. That's probably the only reason I sign up to do applicant luncheons.

Thanks for the advice - unfortunately I don't eat meat so I went with the Veggie sandwich which was... interesting to say the least.

The day overall went okay. My first interview was very laid-back, a sort of "get to you know you" style. However my second interview was much more difficult, more typical of a stress interview. This really surprised me since I had been told the interviews there were all relatively low-key. The interviewer presented 7-8 ethical/tricky situations throughout the interview and asked what I would do in each situation, and then asked me questions about my choice. It was a bit nerve-wracking to say the least, but I maintained my composure and I hope I didn't come across as a fool.

The med students we met with were all very down to earth and conversational - Dr. Foxwell made sure to warn us that the students had exams on Monday and not to worry if they seemed stressed. 🙂 But they were all very friendly and helpful. The tour was also very nice and the most in-depth I've been on so far this season. I really love this school and I hope they like me well enough to send me an acceptance letter. I did find it a little odd that I was the only OOS interviewee there out of 15.

Overall it was an enjoyable experience and for those of you interviewing, don't expect a stress interview like I had - my understanding is that most interviews there are much more low-key. Good luck everyone and let the waiting begin! :luck:

^^Congrats on the interview! It's a great school. If you don't mind me asking, when was your application complete? Thanks!

It's all on my MDApps (click the little triangle next to the school name to get the dates for each school). I was complete at Maryland on 8/9 and invited for an interview on 9/19.

Glad your day went well for the most part. Don't stress over the one interview, there's always a couple people that seem to get one of those even though by and large the interviews here are usually pretty laid back.

Did you visit the anatomy lab? I saw a few tour groups come in while I was in there working around 1 or 1:30. Not that I'd recognize any of you guys if I saw you again.

Thanks for the reassurance. I needed that. 🙂 Yes, we did visit the anatomy lab at that time. I was the really tall guy with dark hair wearing a pinstripe suit. I was with the group that contained the asian guy snapping pictures on his digital camera. 😡 It's really cool that they took us in the anatomy lab - it's the first time I've been in one on an interview and it was the first time I'd ever seen a cadaver.

I looked at your MDapps before posting and didn't see the date you were complete (new feature to MDapps I guess! 🙂). Thanks for the info. Looks like I will be on hold for a while there (complete a few weeks before you). :/ Thanks again.

As a fellow Virginian interviewing at U Maryland next week, thanks for the info. I hope I get two low-key interviewers. I'm surprised you were the only OOS interviewee. I would have at least expected more DC/VA people to be there. And you actually got to go into an anatomy lab? COOL. 👍 I hope I get the same tour.

When I interviewed last year (in late October) about half of us were OOS.

Too bad you didn't come last week, Chad. We had our cadavers up in the lithotomy position while dissecting the perineum. A couple tour groups came through and looked horrified. It was great.

That's pretty funny. I noticed a couple of the interviewees in my group that looked pretty uncomfortable being there, and then our tour guide said "there are buckets under every table if you need to puke." I thought that was pretty funny.

As a student, how do you like Maryland?

Careful, those buckets underneath are filled with the fluid from the cadavers that drips down through a drain in the table. Probably don't wanna get near them if you already have to puke...

I really like it here. I'm only about a month and a half in I guess but so far it's a great place. The professors/lecturers are all for the most part very approachable in and out of class/lab (there's a forum specially designed for posting questions about class topics we're unsure of, and the profs are usually quick to respond with helpful answers). I like the area too, although I guess not everyone loves Baltimore. There are AVI and MP3 recordings of the lectures that are posted online usually minutes after the class ends. And of course the short days of class are good.

If you have any specific questions I'll be glad to answer them.

Ha ha, I figured those buckets had another purpose than being a vomit receptacle for interviewees with weak stomachs. Thanks for offering the help - I am pretty much in love with the school and it would be very difficult for me to pass up an acceptance there. I feel honored to have received an interview and I hope it turns into an acceptance. I'll let you know if I think of any questions.

I actually visited my friend at the school on this day. I observed during the three hour anatomy lab on Monday last week. I even got to make some cuts around the perineum. Had a great time.

I interview on Monday the 6th if anyone else has this day too?

How did they let you guys know you were complete? My application status just says "You have certified successfully" and "No messages at this time"...they have everything in...so what's the deal?

I have the same question.

Mine says the same thing. I emailed them, and they said that as long as you have dates beside all of the fields (Md/PhD, etc excluded) that you are complete.

My stuff has been in since the middle of July, and I still have not heard anything yet. I guess that we all have to be patient.

Does anyone know how long after interviewing the committee notifies you of their decision? I forgot to ask this question when I was there.

Last year a 3 week turnaround was pretty typical (although a few people heard sooner, and a few heard later). Not sure about you guys close to the October 15th "deadline" though.

Dear Maryland,

I have been complete for about a month now, spending too much time on SDN to find other people OOS completed after me that you have already given an interview. You liked me enough to interview me last year with horrible MCAT scores (only to reject me post-interview, but I am willing to forgive), live in-state, and now I work for you dutifully. Yet I still haven't heard from you.

So what the crap? No love?

Sincerely,

Sarah

MSAR showed some depressing statistics for OOS getting interview. I think it was 10% or less.

Sigh...

I can't believe they interviewed you with a 25 last year. That's almost too much to believe. Are you from the eastern shore of Maryland? Where was your undergrad?

Eew.

Given your MDApps though, you seem well-rounded and you'll be perfectly fine given the number of schools you applied to. Me on the other hand, I need all the help I can get since I only applied to 9 without any research...

Don't worry about it, just wait, and hopefully you will get an invite.:luck:

Ha, I know right? Maybe they considered it a fluke since I had only taken it the once...but nope, I'm from Harford Co. and went to TU for undergrad. Maybe it was because of my double-major, I dunno. I was however, extended the rare pleasure of flat out rejection after my interview.

Hopefully I'm in much better shape this year.

I understand your pain. I have been complete since mid-July and have not heard a sound from UMD. sigh :help:

And you're in a lot better shape than me numbers-wise too...at least they can't use the "lost your applications in the mail" excuse. I've been told by faculty that the ADCOM is "really backed up", but apparently not for some OOS people.

Punks.

I find it a little difficult to feel sorry for you when you've had 11 interviews already...🙄

OOS data for 2006-2007: 3639 applied, 153 interviewed, 97 were accepted, 31 enrolled.

So about 4% of OOS applicants are interviewed, but about 66% of OOS interviewees are accepted.

Best of luck! :luck: Maryland is an AWESOME school (it's probably my #2 choice right now)! 👍

So should people who interviewed during the three weeks prior to this one expect a decision tomorrow? Or is it a flat three week turn around from your interview day?

Also, does anyone know how Maryland notifies you of an acceptance?

Their website actually says 4-6 weeks, so I'm not expecting anything for a while. I forgot to ask at my interview day - I might call later this week and ask (anybody want to call for me?) 😉

They also notify by snail mail.
