I dont know wut is up with this ppl. my committee letter was sent 7/31 by virtual eval and up to last wednesday they say they r still missing them. They just say just keep waiting. 😡😡😡
Not to upset you, but that is an awfully long time...since you went through the FIU committee you know that once the letter is written it is immediately sent to every single school you applied to on AMCAS...in some cases schools had my committee letter before I was even able to start my secondary app. I would seriously consider having it re-sent or something...should NOT take almost a month. Just my 2 cents.

Does anyone know their screening criteria, did most people get this one back?

To those who asked about the screening criteria, this is what I found on their website under Admissions FAQ's:

Do all applicants get to complete a secondary application? No. If you are a Florida resident you must have at least a 3.2 undergraduate GPA. If you are a resident of another state you will need to have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 3.6. All applicants must have a minimum composite MCAT score of at least 24.

It was pretty tough to find and obscure. Hopefully this helps.

I am surprised they kept that up on the FAQ because that is outdated. They used to have those screening requirements, but last year they changed it. I know because I applied two years in a row.

Secondary Application

The AMCAS application is used to identify applicants about whom the Committee on Admissions would like more information. All US citizens and permanent residents of the US will be invited to complete a Supplemental (Secondary) Application. Everyone should keep in mind the profile of the latest entering class when deciding whether or not to complete the secondary.

All Applicants who complete the secondary application must also provide a recent photograph (passport sized, 2" x 3") of themselves. Photos sent as email attachments are unacceptable. Permanent residents of the United States must provide a copy of their alien registration receipt (green) card. A non-refundable application fee of $75 is charged to all applicants.

This is the more recent information. If this inconsistency concerns anyone who do not make the old requirements, call the admissions office and confirm this.

If anyone has any questions about the Boca Campus or the differences in the campuses, let me know.

For the "why you chose the Miami campus vs. the Boca Raton campus" question, are you guys mostly writing about things like the beaches at Boca Raton and the babes in Miami?
thx👍

I know this is a bit late, but it might be of some help to others.

For the Boca campus, I'd talk about the small class sizes, PBL, integrated curriculum, and early clinical experience.

For the Miami campus, I'd talk about the excellent facilities at Jackson, prestigious learning environment and faculty, and research opportunities.

ughhhhhhh most of my volunteering IS science and medical volunteering. I don't have much to say for non-medical, non-science volunteering unless I dig back to high school. Would that be appropriate?

Why would you need non medical, non science volunteering? You don't have to fill in every single box on the secondary regarding extracurriculars. For example, I left the Journalism one blank. Your AMCAS activities list is the most important one they look at. Finally, most adcomms don't care about what you did in high school.

looks like there have been some interview offers... but have any OOS applicants heard anything yet?

also, do any of you know the ratio of IS to OOS acceptees or matriculants?

I just got an email asking if I wanted to reschedule my interview and they gave the list of dates for all the interviews this season. Did other people get this email or was it just me?

Bump this question.. Any OOSers heard anything?

I called them a week or so ago since I'd been complete for a while. They said that it would be 2-3 weeks before any OOS invites would be sent out. We're coming up on that time now. HOpefully some of us OOS people will hear something soon.

Thanks for the good info. Sigh.. that's big relief. 🙂

Hey everybody, I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm a fourth-year medical student at the University of Miami. I spent my first two years at the FAU campus, and now here I am in Miami. He have any questions about this school, feel free to post them here and I'll try to get back to you as soon as possible. I encourage you to read some of the older threads about the University as they contain a lot of useful information that is still very relevant today.

Awesome.

Just an FYI for everyone UMMS @ FAU students no longer do their clinical years at Jackson.

My app has been complete at UofMiami for almost 2 months now. I haven't gotten anything from them. Haven't seen any OOS invites on the other threads either. Does anyonw know what is going on? I called a couple of weeks ago and they said it would be soon. Anyone know whats up?

It's still early in the process. I think Miami must only be between its 3rd and 4th interview groups right now (I was in the second group myself, or so I was told, and Miami interviews every Friday). Also my entire interview group was IS (as far as I'm aware).

I wouldn't worry if you interview a little later; it's not going to hurt your chances 👍.

OOS interview invite! Can't wait to finally visit Miami, this is gonna be awesome (weather permitting).

Franksta :

I have an interview invite too - at both campuses. How do I get to the campuses and travel between one and the other? I live too far away to drive a car down there and doubt I'd be able to rent one (age).

Another OOS invite here today! 😱 Both campuses.. and I echo pjg's question above. I suppose the only solution is to find one of the car companies that will let you rent if you're over 21 for an extra fee?

I've been to the Miami campus, but don't know much about the Boca campus, so it will be interesting to see.

I got invited too! Both campuses... is there any drawback to Boca?

i was wondering if they have student hosts and if we can choose a date other than the one they've given us. also are they rolling admissions? thanks!

No student hosts (as far as I'm aware); you can probably choose another date but you'd want to call and make sure.

Good luck :luck::luck::luck:

would you guys say its too late to apply to miami miller?

The interview email they sent me had a number of dates for me to choose from. Did they only offer you one date or do you want one other than the few they offered you? I doubt they would have a problem accommodating you, their office seems very helpful.

Regarding the student hosts, I'm interviewing on Monday and just today received an email that had some information about a student hosts. You might want to ask them if you could get that document sooner. I feel like it would be both difficult and inconvenient for a med student to arrange for a guest to stay with them in a matter of days. If you PM me I'll give you the email address that's listed in the document.

wow, def. never got any info about a student host...whoops.

So.. they gave me a number of dates for both campuses starting next week through Nov. 14th.. I really like Miami, but I need a little time right now and I'd like to coordinate it with another southern interview.. would it be a huge setback to schedule it towards the end of those dates? My numbers are not very competitive there, so it makes me want to go as early as possible, but money-wise and school-wise it would be much more difficult.

so has anyone from oos received an interview from miami? I am oos and was complete with 2ndary and lors around 9/1 (very early september). I e-mailed them and got a response saying my file is currently under review. For those of you who have gotten interviews, how long is the time between app. complete status to interview invite?

I'm from out of state and received an interview invite to both campuses. However, I just called late last week and withdrew for a variety of reasons.

just curious, when were you complete with 2ndary and lor's?

I just got an interview from miami. They were supposed to send a conformation with all the lodging in the area, student hosts etc.... But they haven't yet. Anyone know a hotel close by thats fairly cheap?

There is a horrid hotel on the campus (you can walk to the med school) called the rodeway inn. It is pretty iffy. It was about 60 dollars for one night. It is also near the airport (the school is very close to the airport). I don't know if I would recommend it exactly, but it definitely was convenient.

any body received an acceptance or rejection or anything from UM???😕

had an interview on monday, they said they would start sending out their first acceptances (and I'm assuming rejections as well) mid to late november.

Yeah, they review apps each month. It seems that the Sept. and early Oct. interviews will be going into the end of Oct. review.

I dont know about first acceptances, they told us that our group would probably get acceptances sent out by thanksgiving break.

On another note, was anyone else as impressed by this place as I was. The students were awesome and seemed to be fun to hangout with and study. Very close knit group. Almost unlimited resources to do what you want. Several residencies that are reserved just for UofM students.

The best part of the whole day was when they told us that they accept the majority of students who interview there🙂

I remember that figure...373 out of 500 or something along those lines.

Lately, however, I have been contemplating what a small number 75% is...:scared:

Those numbers sound right🙂 I have the same fear of being in the 25%. Cross your fingers. We'll know in a couple of weeks.

Is that just for instate? Does it include both campuses?

Has anyone who was not complete until the end of september had an interview invite yet? For those of you who have had interviews, would you kindly tell me how long you were complete before the invite? Thanks 🙂

It includes both campi.

I'm not sure what the breakdown is of instate vs out of state, but that's what Dean Weissman presented.

I was complete early august and interviewed early october.

300 something is after waitlist movement though. a school cannot offer more acceptances than they have spaces available (120 for miami campus, 80 i believe for boca). i would assume most waitlist movement will occur after may 15th. 🙁

A school cannot offer more acceptances than they have spaces available.

I think they can and moreover they do.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here. Schools regularly offer more acceptances than they have spaces available. That was my understanding.

pianola, i meant to say that they can't offer more acceptances than spaces at one point. e.g. if med school X has 100 spaces in their class and they've offered 100 acceptances, they cannot offer the 101st until one of the initial 100 drops. this is strait from Dr. Weismann at UM.

Hmm. Well, maybe it's a UM policy then. It just seems counterintuitive.

I mean, I know UPitt, for example, offers some 400 acceptances for 100+ seats (without going to the waitlist first).

Do you really think 300 people will turn down an acceptance from Pitt that they can easily hold before May 15th? 😕 I mean, yeah, there's a fee associated with holding that acceptance, but I really don't know that that would deter 300+ people from holding it anyway...

I got in! Got a call from Dr. Weisman about half an hour ago. Good luck everyone 😀
