Hey everyone. I got an interview invite 1/21/09 and interviewed 2/6/09 so they are definitely still interviewing. Suppose to hear back in 2-4 weeks.:xf: I'm an undergraduate at UM so I really would like to get into Miller. Good luck everyone!

I interviewed on the 22nd.

I was told that decisions will most likely be sent out on a wednesday and should be around valentine's day. :-\

I really hope I get some love from Miami, I really like the city, and the weather, not to mention the clinical experiences the student's get.

Anyways, I am not expecting much tho, this application cycle is pretty cruel to me. :-/

Congrats to those who were accepted! There's a class of 2013 group forming on facebook for those who are interested. i got sad when i saw it's been stuck at 23 members for the past 3 months.

For the alternate lists, good luck! UM's moves quite a bit (dont remember the exact numbers) so theres still a great chance!

Hi everyone!

I just started reading this thread, because I am anxiously still waiting for an interview invite from UM. I have heard that they have rather strict GPA/MCAT cut-offs to determine who to interview. Does anyone know whether or not this is true? And if it is, do you know what the approximate cut-off is?

I called the admissions office today and all they will tell me is that my file is awaiting a committee decision and that they are interviewing until March 27th (for right now).

Thanks.. good luck to everyone who is still waiting and congrats to those who have already been accepted!

Hey jnjMD, I'm anxiously awaiting for a reply from UM too. My friend goes to medical school there, and he says that kids in his class have a wide range of MCAT and GPA. If you have lower than expected you'll probably be placed on a wait list, but then eventually get accepted. By the way, I think the committee met today or is meeting to night. So cross your fingers for an interview invite. I've been praying all day for one...LOL!

Best of Luck!

yupyup the dean said the adcom would meet today. so perhaps decisions will be mailed tmrw?

Hey man, I am surprised that with your 3.8 GPA, 36 MCAT and some research under your belt, you did not get more interviews this cycle. Which undergrad school are you attending? That's the only thing that I can think of may be affecting you credentials and perhaps not enough ECs that show a passion outside of medicine?

Any way, speculating big time here, but glad you got an acceptance earlier.

I have a Bioengineering B.S degree at UC Berkeley. I have 2 years of research under my belt, so that area is pretty solid in my opinion. My main weakness is, as you said, my EC. I've only had about 1 year of volunteering experience at hospitals. I guess medical schools want me have more. As far as interest outside medicine, I have several 😛 (Sports/Music).

I am slightly surprised that I am not offered more opportunities to interview, but this cycle is difficult for a lot of people. I am not going to dwell on this though, I feel very fortunate to have an acceptance already.

Couple questions here:
1 - Anyone know when Miami will be extending interview invites until?
2 - Is there a status check on the website or do we need to call directly?
Thanks guys.

1. "march 27th" - jnjmd86
2. no website. must call or maybe email.

you're welcome.

Has anyone heard anything from UM yesterday or today?

Has anyone heard anything from UM yesterday or today?

Yea most committee meeting are on wednesday afternoons and acceptances usually hear the same afternoon (pretty much as soon as the meeting is finished) or maybe early next day.

I read your post earlier that you were waiting for an interview invite, i dont think they're sent out right after meetings, but could be sent out any day of the week so if you don't hear anything right after wednesdays, don't worry too much. On an even brighter side, I know someone last cycle who interviewed in march and was accepted after a brief 2 week waitlist.

Does anyone know how long it takes the scholarship committees to review the diversity scholarship application? or when they will notify you?

Are there any scholarships we can apply for? Or are all accepted students considered for diversity and merit based scholarships? Thanks.

You can apply for the diversity one (website is in the acceptance letter). Merit is considered automatically i think.

Would someone be able to post the website for the diversity one? Also, has anyone been offered any merit based money yet?

I was just waitlisted about a week or two ago...and now I'm accepted. U.M. called me Thursday, told me I was in. Kinda weird how quickly I was moved from waitlisted, I expected it to happen in June or so, not now. Great news though.

I got the call from "Gordon". He mentioned I would be getting an e-mail and a letter in the snail mail. Have yet to receive either of those...how long after the call should I expect the e-mail to come?

Also, When do classes start?

Are you in-state of OOS? I've been on the waitlist unfortunately since December...

Hey Sergioma,

Congratz on the acceptance. When did you interview? and how did they contact you when you were placed on the waitlist?

I interviewed about a month ago (Jan 22nd), I did not remember if we have to indicate whether to receive waitlist notification thru snail mail/ email. The mailmen lost the master key to my apt's mailbox. I have not been getting any mails for about a week. I am pretty sure I am on the wait-list at this point since I have not hear back from them yet.

Easily became my 2nd choice, and may be tied with my top choice.... VERY awesome at both the Boca and the Main Campus.

Class is full, but they expect lots of movement even before May 15th, especially once people commit to either the Boca or Miami campus.

To current miller students or anyone else who knows:

1. What is the grading system like?

1a. Also, is the grading system different for Boca and Miami, if so how?

2. Is there a white coat ceremony?

Wait for confirmation from a current student, but from my interview I remember them saying it was P/F with number grades.... So you know how you did, but it boils down to P/F. Also, I believe it is the same at each campus.

There is a "Pinning Ceremony" that replaces the White Coat; the ceremony occurs in April.

Thanks. Yes I remember during interview that it was Pass/Fail with a number grade, but does the number grade stay on your transcript?

What happens when you apply for residency? They can't judge potential residents just based on pass/fail?

I think the number does stay on so it looks like Pass (85) but they emphasized that the number is insignificant bc they have no mean, sd etc so the ppl looking at it has no way of decipherin its value. I personally still don't like the number on the side.

Can any current Miller students confirm this?

I can't confirm it from first hand experience but that was what I was told as well. It's pass fail but the grade does go on your transcript. Not EXACTLY pass/fail but kind of I guess.

We do indeed have some stats that come with grades: median, high, and low. After each exam a graph with everyone's grade is posted in the halls. No names are used, but you can certainly compare your scores against others'. These numbers are then used in creating the quartiles and inducting AOA members. However, the final transcript will only have a P/F with an arrow drawn on the graph to show your performance to residency programs. Our transcript is very confusing, leaving most readers to note the line of P's and then move on.

We don't have a white coat ceremony since we start seeing patients very early. There is a pinning ceremony in the Spring. The date changes every year.

Thanks for the info!

Again, I have to reiterate: U of Miami (Both BR and Main) are amazing and I wouldn't let a confusing transcript keep me away!

We're slipping dangerously close to the 3rd page here guys, come on!

For those of you that are almost certain you'll be attending, when do you all think you'll be moving down to Miami (or if you're from down there, getting an apartment).

If I get in, probably late July.

Very nervous! And I'll probably have to wait even in best case scenario, since the class was "full" when I interviewed... Though they have some spots opening up once people choose which Campus.

Hey there Miami hopefuls. I thought those who are on the waiting list would like to know that UM just sent out emails today asking those who are accepted to both campuses to indicate their preference. They set a deadline of March 15th to respond. That should open up a few slots and get things moving a bit.

wow thats great news, thanks for the info

I am getting very nervous about this school... Can't wait to hear back (even if it is just which WL I get on!)

Interviewed 02/02. But I have not received any formal letter/email from them.
Is there anyone in a similar situation?

i got the phone call on like 1/15 or something but the packet came like 3 weeks later or something bc there was a mistake according to them or some problem with the mailing, you should've gotten an email thou? If not, below is the e-mail make sure you write to them and tell them u didnt get ur email etc. btw congrats!

In Miami right now, looking for a place. Super excited for next year. Does anyone know where they want to live yet (by the school, downtown/brickell, grove, gables)?

I called about two weeks ago because I was suppose to hear back from them mid february (interviewed jan 23rd). They told me the admissions committee did not get to review my files yet. My file will be reviewed at the next committee meeting (I forgot the date for the life of me). Anyway, since people are saying the class is full already, I am expecting a email of some sort.

I am going to Miami again for spring break vacation on the 19th with my gf. Hopefully I'll hear back from U Miami soon.

Well the class may be full, but I'm sure that once some people with acceptances to both campuses pick one a few spots will open up. This may just coincide with the committee meeting, but all you can really do is wait. Your app looks very good, and so you're just going to need to give it time.

i remember at the interview they were saying there is a "temporary alternate list" and an "alternate list"...

the email i got starts out "you are temporarily on the alternate list"... does that mean im on the alternate list or the temporary alterate list.

any insight???

when you were on the waitlist was it the temporary on or the normal alternate list?? do you know what im talking about>??

Yay, they got to my app. I was placed on the "temporary" alternate list as well. I personally don't think that means anything, nor am I suprised that I was going to be placed on the list. The class was full already! The applications that are being reviewed will only be ranked for further consideration.

Gluck everyone, Ill check back on the 15th to see if there is anything exciting going on.

are these emails that were sent out? I thought waitlist notifications came via snail mail....

What's the difference between temporary and regular? My email has no indication of temporary or regular alternate, although I've only received an email from the Boca Raton campus today. Do they even do that at the Boca campus?

I want so badly to attend University of Miami Miller. It's my number one choice... I'm just eagerly waiting. I hope my chances are decent, because it's where my heart is.

I received an email saying I was "temporarily" placed on the alternate list. They did say there were two lists during interview day. I hope I'm on the better list!

Hopefully come March 15th, we'll hear good things once the boca and miami accepted students figure out where they want to go.

Text of email:

I apologize for contacting you in such an impersonal way but the Committee has reached a decision on your application. After careful review and discussion they have placed you temporarily on the alternate list at the Medical Campus in Miami. A formal letter to this effect will be sent to you so look for it in the mail over the next few days.
While I share in your disappointment at being placed on the alternate list, you should remember that no fewer than 67 of the 126 regular matriculants at the Miami Campus last year came from the alternate list.
If you have an interest in maintaining your status as an alternate to the 2009 entering class, you must inform us of your interest in writing as soon as possible. Only students who notify us of their desire to be placed on the alternate will be considered further. Notification by email is perfectly acceptable. Just send a message to [email protected]. It should be clearly understood that placement on the alternate list does not assure that you will be admitted and that it may not be possible to make a final decision for some time. However, we will notify you immediately when there is a change in your status. Alternatively, if your plans change and you wish to withdraw from further consideration please notify my office accordingly at the email address above.
If you accept placement on our alternate list, you should keep us informed of any grades you receive from class work in progress, any special recognition or awards you receive, or if your plans change and you wish to withdraw from further consideration. Also, be sure to notify AMCAS if your mailing address or telephone number changes.
If you are accepted at some point in the future, you may want to apply for a scholarship. You can actually do that now by going to www.miami.edu/medical-admissions/scholarshipform. Filling out the Scholarship Information Form now will just speed things up later on. It should be clearly understood that submitting the form plays no role in the admissions process whatsoever!
If you have any questions or need any other information, please call my office at the number below.
Sincerely,
Richard Weisman, Pharm.D.
Associate Dean for Admissions
University of Miami School of Medicine

I don't know if there are two lists, but say there are, I would think that the temporary one is the one who they will take off people first. They are on the temporary alternate list bc the class is currently full and would've been accepted if the class wasn't full so hence temporary? I don't know, just a thought. Good luck to everyone waiting!
