sorry to bring this up but this waitlist thing is kind of weird. I applied last year and was put on the waitlist. There were two different emails sent out and mine was supposedly the "better" email (confirmed with phone call). Similarly, I had a good friend who interviewed a few weeks after me and received the "worse" email (she showed it to me). When end of march came around (when the waitlist started moving), she was accepted and I was ultimately rejected in the summer. I'm not saying this to hurt morale or anything, just some personal experience of what happened with me last year and how confusing this whole process is.

from what i gathered with members familiar with the application process, there is a ranked waitlist and they just pull names off as spots become available.

I think they try to rank the waitlist on a rolling basis. So theoretically, when you were WLed, you were in the "good" category, when your friend was WLed, she got put in ahead of you, but enough people were floated to the top that put BOTH of you in the not so good category. That's the only explanation I can think of that would keep the system as a "rational" response. But you already know this process isn't simple.

Anyone else with a WL email that is worded differently than mine? Care to share/compare?
 
so Miami went from snail mailing waitlists to emailing them? Odd...

If they do that, then we both have a good chance then? lets hope that this is true.

However, I think we are over thinking stuff. I think this temporary list just mean people who interviewed after the class is full. I was not aware of the fact that there are two lists. The dean did not talk about it when I interviewed. But if there is such a list, shouldn't it be called something like a "high priority list?"

When I interviewed he used the terms wait list and temporary wait-list which is why that caught my attention in the email.

I hope it is good news... We can't change it we are just neurotic enough to want to know 🙂

Yep, that was pretty much my point albeit poorly worded. The waitlist is ranked based on average scores that you get from the adcom meetings so positions change with every meeting. I thought I was on the better waitlist because the phrasing was something like "class is currently full......placed you at least temporarily on the alternate list" which gave me a lot of hope because of the class being full and the word temporarily, but was eventually rejected. Lesson I learned was not to think too much into the phrasing of the email or which waitlist I think I'm on, probably reading way too into detail about it and at worst could definitely set hopes up for a big fall. Having gone through this whole fiasco last year, I have to say that over analyzing, though interesting and captivating, doesn't help too much. Just remember that the waitlist moves quite a bit every year. Last year's started around end of this month and continued sporadically until early July. The year before, I actually know someone that was accepted a week or two before classes began. You can check through previous threads to see when people started posting of their acceptances.

I received the same e-mail, but without the word 'temporarily' . hah. Bummer
 
What is the general consensus on the University of Miami Miller medical school? I would imagine it is one of the more up and coming schools with the large increase in research dollars that have accompanied the hiring of some big names including Dean Goldschmidt.

No real estimate of this....Fin Aid office last month told me that they are distributed on a rolling basis and if I receive something I will find out by mail. crossing fingers for some good news in this department.

Yea I actually just received something from them on Saturday, cheered my day up. I submitted it about mid-late January. So it takes them about a month and half I guess.
 
can someone clear up the grading system? is it just pass fail with 2 divisions or are there pass w/ honors, etc. Thanks

Do we definitely get an answer from both campuses? Or is no news = a rejection from FAU post interview???

I think Chuck's Right Foot is just worried that the school is too swamped to let him/her know if he's been rejected. Definitely happened to me last cycle with some schools up north that receive way too many apps (i.e. nymc, jefferson...etc). But yea, just keep waiting, it's not like you can demand info from them. As far as I know, UM has the courtesy to tell you.

No, more specifically, I've been WLed at the Miami campus, but did not hear anything about Boca.... But I am going to assume the decisions are sent separately.
 
Is anyone having trouble accessing the diversity scholarship page?

Miami accepts 75% of interviewees, so your odds are excellent. They have a ranked wait list (which they won't disclose to you), and it starts to move around May 11. Below is something written by Dr. Hinkley a few years ago on Miami's wait list:

My friend from Cali applied to Miami Miller two years ago. Similar to you, he was invited for interview in January, and had the interview in mid February. Because of his schedule, he only interviewed at the main campus and did not go visit the Boca campus. They put him on wait list in early March. He really likes the school, and wrote them a couple LOI's, telling them he really wanted to go to Miller. In early June, he was accepted off the waitlist. As promised, he dropped his only other acceptance (from a NY school) and went to Miller. I spoke to him recently and he is very happy there, and is getting ready to take the Step One in a couple months.

Why don't you write a LOI to the admissions and let them know you are very interested to come to Miami? It cannot hurt you.

In a good LOI, who should I address and what do you think they want to hear about the most? I guess I would try to be specific as possible about why I want to go to Miami but is there anything else I should make sure to include?

Yep, you should be very specific about why you want to attend the school and why they should pick you. I would address it to the admissions committee (as opposed to dean of admissions) bc they make the decisions.

During my interview day, I approached two students on the admissions committee (after they introduced themselves in the Q and A session, 2 4th year? girls) and asked them if the committee re-votes to change your ranking on the waitlist upon receipt of new information (i.e. grades, LOI) through updates. Their answers were that the original votes are final and they do not vote again. Then I asked what would be the point of sending in updates, to which they had no response other than it shows you're interested and it won't hurt (they were kinda caught off guard by the question). I was kinda bummed about the answer but hey, it never hurts to try.

Someone last year posted their LOI as a model, I thought it was quite good, if you do a search on here you might find it. It was about a full page single spaced. If not, you can PM me and I can send you mine (I modeled it after the one on here).

That's weird that the updates don't really matter. I guess I don't have to worry about my latest grades as much. On the other hand I wish there was a way to improve my chances. I already sent an LOI but wasn't sure if it was too early or something. oh well
 
I don't think it's too early. If it is, you can always write another one later and send it I guess.

Does anyone know when we have to send a deposit or anything?
 
When I was at my interview, one of the applicant asked the question about LOIs for those on the wait-list. The dean say something along the line of it doesn't help because the wait-list is ranked. Anyone heard something similar?

There was an interview on Dr. Hinkley, the director of Miami's admission office in 2007. Dr Hinkley is a man of humor and wisdom and the article may be helpful to Miami's hopeful:

It seems like Miami has a ranked waitlist, so LOI's won't make much of a difference with one exception. Starting around May 11, accepted applicants start to withdraw and the admissions office will offer seats to students on the waitlist. Some people who are offered seats may accept the offer, but many more will turn them down since they have already committed to another school. The job of the admissions office is to make sure that they fill up 150 seats, so when the waitlist start to dwindle (let's say early June), they might look at your file favorably if you have written a strong LOI and tell them that you definitely will come if accepted. I think sending LOI's around 5/1, 6/1 and 7/1 will not hurt, and they should be addressed to the dean of Admission, who is usually in charge of picking people off the waitlist.

My friend from Cali applied to Miami during the 2006-07 cycle and was placed on waitlist in March 07. He wrote them LOI's on 4/1, 5/1, and 6/1, updating them on new LOC's, achievements etc, and also told them the he was very interested to attend Miami despite being accepted to a NY school. He received an email in early June informing him that he was accepted to Miami-Miller. As promised, he dropped the NY acceptance, and attended Miami. I spoke to him recently, and he is very happy with Miami, getting ready for the Step 1 exam in 10 weeks.
 
The student host I stayed with also was placed on the WL first and he told me that when he interviewed in February, they told him that the class was already full and he also told me that someone suggested that he write a LOInterest if he really wanted to go to Miami (perhaps it was his interviewer) and he did, 2 weeks later he was off the list or something of that fashoin. May or June rings a bell...does anyone happen to know general idea of when fin aid packages get sent out?
 
Regarding financial aid packages, I know people have started receiving some scholarship offers so financial aid appears to be going out. I don't know when the full packages will be finalized though, I would suspect in May but maybe a student could answer that one.

Has anyone been accepted to the regional campus? If so, when did you interview and when were you accepted?

I interviewed at both campuses in the beginning of February. I was waitlisted at the Miami campus a few weeks ago (just as Dean Weisman told us). I still haven't heard any news from Boca though. I called two weeks ago and was told that I'd be hearing back soon, but still no news.

Is anyone else in the same situation?

Pretty much the same boat. I called and we should hear back after the middle of next week (their next adcom meeting).
