Congrats if you have been accepted to Pitt. If you are interested in housing in one of the nicer parts of town (which is to say, not next to the school itself...), drop me a line:

Put something about "housing" in the title, and I can provide the details from there.

Regards.

another email from "admissions"-- they got my hr racing-- to remind me to fill out my FAFSA because I'm still on the waitlist. Couldn't it have at least been from Fin Aid... I wouldn't have gotten as worked up!

super adrenaline dump... then d'oh.

at least I'm awake now. Jesus what a rush...

hey, I've heard that most waitlist movement happens ~May 15th. is that generally true?

Yup. For most schools due to the AMCAS policy after May15th for students.

fingers crossed.:xf:

is anyone here going to second look? I probably won't be able to go. I wanted to know if someone would be able to fill me in on the info provided.

hey does anyone know what a typical 1st and 2nd year week's class schedule at Pitt is like?

hey does anyone know what a typical 1st and 2nd year week's class schedule at Pitt is like?

1st year: class from 8/9 to 12 everyday (wednesday mornings are ethics or statistics or things like that), more science from 1-4/5 on tuesdays and wednesdays, and then a clinical course on one of the other afternoons

2nd year: same as first year except the long science day is thursday. and wednesday mornings arent as busy.

so basically, about two afternoons off every week.

Could a current med student give some perspective on living in Pitt? Thanks 🙂

I read somewhere that 40% of Pitt med students receive grants or scholarships. Is this true? Are all of these given based on merit?

I really like living here. I live in Shadyside currently and will be moving to Highland Park this summer. Shadyside is a bit on the expensive side, but it was worth it, in my opinion, because I wanted a nice apartment where I would feel comfortable and safe. I found a nice apartment in Highland Park for $200 cheaper that gives me an extra 500 square feet, though, so that's where I'm heading next.

The bus system is pretty good around here so it's really easy to get to school.

There are lots of things to do in this city and it's really pretty safe when compared to other cities.

Any specific questions?

I wouldn't be surprised if that number is true, but the money received might not be a lot. Many are need-based.

I am on the waitlist as well, but I was wondering how many of your classmates have cars? How costly is it to keep a car in Pittsburgh?

Also how many of your classmates live in grad housing?

Oy, $25000/year merit scholarship...was pretty set on UCLA, but I'm going to start considering Pitt more now.

I think that most people have cars. I have one and would never consider living without it. The bus system is great for getting to and from Oakland, but for stuff like shopping or going places at night, it's super nice. Price to keep a car varies from place to place. Street permit parking is $25 for a year if you live in Shadyside or Squirrel Hill. When I was looking at places, I remember places that did not offer free off-street parking were charging ~$60-70 a month, but these places were usually cheaper for monthly rent than those that did have offstreet parking for free or were in places that there's plenty of street parking right outside the building where you wouldn't actually need or want the parking for that price. If you lived in Darragh parking is about $85+ a month, which they want paid all upfront for the year, and the parking is a few blocks further up the hill. I think that just under half our class lives there now, and it's quite a bit less for the first years.

good luck to everyone still waiting or on the waitlist. i'm getting to remove myself from the waitlist...even though I really loved Pitt.

Ok after getting that "ask a student" e-mail this morning I have to say Pitt is pretty much the #1 cause of heart attack among premed students.

Putting my name at the top of the letter really sold the fake-out.

That said, Matt'll be really cool to ask questions to-- and anyone on here asking questions should send them to him. This was the first of the 500 emails from admissions we've gotten that was effective at making me like the school even more.

What is the range of rental cost in Shadyside?

Thanks.

What is the range of rental cost in Shadyside?

Thanks.

Hmmm...it's really going to depend on the size of the apartment and whether or not you split rent withh a roommate. My apartment is going to be renting for $970 for 800-850 square feet, and that's up from the $860 I paid when I first moved in.

I would say you're probably looking at between 700-1200 plus or minus utilities. A good way to get an idea of prices is to look on craigslist http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/apa/

Was anyone else sold on the school based on the Dyson AirBlade in the bathrooms?

our school is currently spending money on remodeling the bathrooms (right now they're working on the 5th floor, which makes things very inconvenient for the second years during small group session). my opinion is the remodeled bathrooms better be damn amazing cuz i can think of other things that money could be going toward.

oh man i'm 100% at pitt now, got a 30k/year merit scholarship!! that makes it cheaper than my state school !!!! i am so excited!! 😀
goodluck to you guys on the waitlist!

Congratulations FoodFood! I'm soooo glad to see that apparently getting accepted off of the waitlist does not negatively impact finaid. It's also pretty amazing to me that they would waitlist someone that they felt deserved a merit scholarship in the first place!?!? They clearly love you!

congrats food! How did they notify you!

yeah this process is weirdddd i did not expect that at all!!! i was notified through a letter that was mailed to me like one or two weeks after I was accepted. i am so grateful and i feel so blessed!!! 🙂

oh question--i was wondering what the building/area is called where med students stay and it kinda looks like a dorm? its like at the end of this road, and near the children's hospital. and it's relatively new/nice looking. i know this isn't descriptive at all, but it's where i stayed with a student host when i interviewed. haha okay thanks! damn i'm so excited!!!

I think you're talking about the Darragh Street Apartments.

Has everyone who interviewed heard by now?

Also, I wanted to let you all know that I e-mailed a few questions to the ask a med student thing and I received a prompt, thorough, thoughtful reply. I highly recommend it if you need a little encouragement in this dead period until May.

Tons of people have! Check the rest of the thread!

Just wondering is Pitt has compiled its match list yet. Any insight from current students/Erina is appreciated

OK, rearranged by speciality. The numbers add upto 163, does it mean that there are repeats in prelim and transitional?

a lot of people had two programs by their names, some kind of prelim year and then the residency they're specifically going into. for example, someone matched into surgery and then the next year they will start their urology residency. Or a preliminary medicine year before going into derm.

i attached the match list (minus student names) to this post

wow that's an awesome match list! just wondering--for the people who are pretty sure they will be attending, where are you guys planning on living? do a lot of first years live in the darragh street apartments?

Wow... it seems like a lot of people on SDN have gotten merit scholarships from Pitt. Does anyone know how many they give?

I'm a current Pitt student. If you have any questions about the school or the city, shoot me a message.

Regards!

Hey! Has anyone going to second look (next weekend!!) heard anything about student hosts? I'm wondering if I need to book a hostel room or a hotel just in case?

It was asked awhile ago, but I'd be happy to report back about the revisit for people who can't go.

The student hosts have been matched with people who are coming to second look. They should be contacting you soon about it--I just saw the list today.

Did anyone here apply to the CSTP program? Just curious if anyone else is waiting to hear. They said that decisions would be out in April, so I guess it could be any time now. It would have been nice to hear before second look, although I guess that is still a possibility...

I spoke to Jennifer in the CSTP office about a week ago. She said they were trying to have decisions out in time for second look. Sure would be nice, but she certainly didn't make any guarantees and time is running out at this point. What I forgot to ask was how we're going to receive our decisions. Any idea if they're planning to call or email or make updates on status pages?

I did some SDN researching, and it looks like last year they e-mailed and then sent a letter in the mail, and it looks like it was on April 2! Let's hope they're planning to do the same this year!

I was also wondering this..I'm glad someone had the initiative to post.

How much clinical research experience do you guys have? I feel underqualified for this program.

LBostonA, asl2101, cstplove are you guys all set on Pitt? Seems like cstplove is. I think clinical research is preferred but I think my student host is a CSTP but it seemed like most of his research was basic science. Good luck guys!
