You just made things so much worse for me! If I don't get a phone call on the 15th, I'm going to expect a waitlist letter in the mail.

I mean I'm in that same club Berk. And they may call on the 16th, we don't know, problem being I'm on a plane for most of Thursday.

And then I won't be back in town until AFTER 2 interviews. So if I don't hear back by the 20th when I'm still out of town I'm going to assume rejection.

Wow...same here! On thrusday and friday, I'm not going to pick up.

Ok...I'm scared...really, really scared.

I'm just hoping I get one acceptance before my interview on the 20th. I have 3 schools that are supposed to start accepting before then. Just one will make my life so much brighter!!!

I have 2 that snail mail acceptances (vandy included) and one on the 22nd (email). So, I'm basically in the same position. 😛

One would make everything better!

if they do come out in snail mail i wonder if they will arrive around the 15th or will they be sent on the 15th? i am in a similar situation and will not be home anytime except for the 15th and then not until after the 20th as well. also isnt vandy on the cbc so should we be expecting the email like the people from case?

I *think* Vandy mails the letter out on Oct 15th, but I can't remember where I heard/read that. I might be totally making that up... everything's blurring together.

I wonder if we're allowed to call on Oct 15th to ask about our status? Maybe not, eh?

I also *think* that they mail them out on the 15th. But, I also don't remember who said that...

Calling would probably be a bad idea. I'll call if I don't hear from them by the 20th, though.

One of the admissions officers said that in the mid-day meeting thing.

If they mail them on the 15th we can't expect them to arrive until the 17th...

Shemarty and I are from Cali...so we have to wait till the 18th, maybe even the 20th!

🙁 Oh, snail mail, why *are* you so slow?

I wonder, why do schools chose to send acceptances snail-mail w/o a status-page update or an e-mail?

I guess a letter in the mail is more "official" or "formal"...?

But it's so slooowww!!! I wish they knew how agonizing this is for us. 😛

Christ, this thread is making *me* nervous, and I haven't even interviewed yet (Tuesday!). Cut it out!

You should..you interviewed there and you are an SDN mod...find out berken.
Ok, let me fly over there right now and I'll get back to you by tomorrow morning. Is that fast enough, sir?

I only sent the required LORs...but it does say if there are any additional LORs that cover special ECs, you can send them. So, I'm guessing they're kinda lenient, but don't overdo it.

hey, are you guys sure that they are snail mailing decisions? I was checking last years acceptance thread and it seems that many people got phone calls on the 15th and afterward..

I sent 8 - it was the same packet I sent to every school. I figure if they want to stop reading at 4 or 6, etc, they can. I did ask my pre-med advisor about this beforehand, and she gave me the green light.

I do feel kinda ridiculous about it, but what's done is done. I'd like to think they were all meaningful letters...I hope?

I don't think any of us are sure of anything at this point...

Maybe they call on the 15th and ALSO snail-mail a letter? I think this is fairly common practice? But somebody else said that not everyone who's accepted gets a phone call...?

8?! But, you're shemarty! You can do whatever you want and still get accepted!

I just know they said that they snail mail all decisions on the 15th. So...i guess we'll see?

At one of my interviews, (not Vandy) I barely came up with anything for "why x school?"

The question was phrased as "What are you looking for in a medical school?" and my answer was general and not school-specific. My interviewer said "well, x school can certainly offer you those things..."

I felt super lame.

haha I did that for my last interview as well. This was my answer: "I really love this school. It's amazing and there's great research opportunities, great city, great curriculum. I mean, this school is great! I love this school!"
The interviewer smiles and says "fair enough"

I hope I didn't sound like a huge idiot.

If you are accepted on the first go around, Dr. Zic will be able to notify you after the 15th (or whatever the national date is this year). You will subsequently receive a written offer of admission.

A few people don't end up getting called, and I assume it is for accidental reasons since Dr. Zic really wants to be able to personally let each accepted student hear the good news from a phone call as opposed to a letter.

If you are not accepted on the first go around, you will be put on a waitlist. Vandy doesn't really reject people (at least those who got interviewed) until April/May, regardless if you have a good shot or not to get off the waitlist.

Don't worry too soon if Dr. Zic, doesn't call you on the 15th. I was called on the first day he was calling a couple years ago and it was several days after the 15th. Also keep in mind that he might not have time to call all 20 (or however many there are) accepted students in one night. He does is calling in the evening, just to let you know.

alright to change the subject from ultra-nervous chatter about the quickly approaching dawn of the 15th.....

? about evaluations first and second year:

I know it's basically pass fail, but my memory is failing me on the finer details. Is there a high pass option added second year? Are the evaluations curved? Can EVERYONE pass or is there a certain percentage at the bottom who automatically fail?

Just curious as to how "true" Vandy's pass/fail system is......

Thanks for any info 👍

I got the impression it was a true pass fail system (though they have a pass* for people who are borderline i think). That's to say everyone can pass, and I don't recall anything about a high pass being added 2nd year.

Does anyone know what the cutoff for hearing news tomorrow will be? I interviewed on 9/18, and they said 6 weeks, so does that mean I should not hold my breath until November, since they are giving acceptances once a month now?

I think you have a chance of hearing by tomorrow...but since they said 6 weeks, assume you're going to wait 6 weeks.

you never know, your name coming up depends on when your interviewer was present at the adcom meeting and how many other people they get through.

I interviewed on 9/11 and am expecting (hoping for) some sort of info tomorrow. I'd say you could reasonably expect to hear something, but let's not get our hopes up.

Haha army, I interviewed a couple days before you and they said they're sending out offers on Oct 15 for us.

Yay for Vandy! Come on and give me some good news!

1st year = P/F
2nd year = H/P/F
3rd and 4th year = H/HP/P/F

I really don't know why we have Honors this year (so far its been much easier than 1st year material IMO), but in the end no one cares if you were able to do well in preclinical coursework if you don't do well on Step 1 (the 3rd year's average this year was around 240!)

Everyone can pass. In fact our pathology professor joked with us about how hard it would be to fail an exam. There is a P* designation if you barely passed, but it does not go on your permanent transcript if you happen to earn that 'honor'. (The first exam our class took during M1 had an average around 92 to give you perspective on the "difficulty" of passing). Other than ridiculous questions that have been thrown out after the test was graded, our exams aren't "curved."

I wouldn't worry about grading schemes when differentiating between schools, there are really more important things to worry about. Namely, quality of life, cost of living, safety of the city, etc. Nashville is excellent on these attributes, and VMS is a place that will open up doors for you in the future (check the match list if you haven't done so already). You shouldn't study less because a school is P/F (or you shouldnt have to study harder since a school does ABCDF) since studying is a means to gain knowledge for future medical practice.

Vandy was incredible.

Absolutely incredible.

Dulcina is awesome in real life as well. Though often tired.

The Children's Hospital is exactly what a child's hospital should look like. Exactly what! Loved my time there.

I thought word on the street was that there would be calls made later on tonight if anything, like 9 - 11pm EST. Or perhaps over the next couple days.

I'm pretty sure it's either an evening phone call through the end of this week or medium thick envelope that would not have been postmarked until today that will be the methods of choice.

I saw ONE person from last year with my exact interview date who was notified on the 17th via phonecall. I'll be crossing my fingers, but it has only been like 2 1/2 weeks heh 🙄

Ohh calls at night?! Ohh wow...I can relax until then. Thanks!

yea, I'm basing that on the times reported in last years thread and I'm almost 100% sure a student mentioned something along the lines of "Dr. Zic likes to call in the evening" somewhere back in this thread.

Don't sweat it berken, you've got good news coming your way one way or another in this process. 👍

Thanks Scean!!! I feel better now.
