Have anyone gotten their secondary yet? in state or out of state??

I haven't seen a single report of anyone who has gotten it yet.

someone on another thread (west virginia university?) said they just got their secondary through snail mail...

here they come!

That's the pre-dental forum. So they're talking about WVU Dental School secondary application.

oh haha didn't notice that. thatnks for catching it. i'm just desperate for some news

It's no problem. We all make mistakes!

From what I've heard, WVU is usually a bit behind anyway, so I think it's best if we all just focus on our other secondaries and be patient for WVU to start rolling in. Does anyone know if/when the class of 2012 started classes there?

Just received the secondary. Here are the essays:

Please respond to the following questions. Limit your response to half a page for each question, single spaced format using a 12 point font.
  1. Why are you applying to West Virginia Unverisity School of Medicine?
  2. Give an example of a volunteer or community service activity that has helped to define your character?
  3. One Sunday afternoon in your first year of medical school you are studying for your biochemistry test. This is your fourth out of five tests and you can flunk this test and still pass the course. A group of very good friends calls and tells you that they will be in town only for tonight and they want you to spend the evening out with them. What do you do and why?
  4. What has been the biggest challenge you have had to overcome this far in your life?
LOR info:

  1. You will need to obtain three(3) recommendation letters for your application.
    1. One letter from a primary instructor in your major.
    2. One letter from a science course instructor, other than your major (Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry preferred).
    3. One Communication Evaluation recommendation. This should be from someone who knows you well (some one you have worked with in either a job (supervisor/employer) or volunteer, community service or shadowing experience personnel).
  2. Print off the recommendation forms (three copies of the Waiver Form, two copies of the Standard Evalutaion Forms, and one copy of the Communication, Evaulation Form) and must be sent to each evaluator:
    1. Complete Waiver Forms (entirely)
    2. Complete Evaluation Forms (top half only)
  3. In lieu of the two (2) instructor(s) recommendation letters (a and b above), if your school offers a letter writing service, uses VirtualEval or Interfolio, the Waiver Forms and Evaluation Forms DO NOT need to accompany recommendations. We still require a seperate Communication Evaluation.
  4. We will accept additional letters from employers, physicians, community leaders and other professionals who know you well DO NOT copy our recommendation forms for extra letters of recommendation, they will not be accepted. Extra recommendations maybe submitted on letterhead or personal stationary. The Admissions Committee feels that quality rather than quantity.

I got the invite today, but should I apply?

<NY state resident
<No "strong" ties to West Virginia

I'm oos too, does anybody know how many out of states they take?

Another 2-weeker...sigh...🙁 But it shouldn't be too bad, I'll be doing a little bit of recycling.

This was the only thing that I could find on their website concerning IS/OOS.....

We do give preference to West Virginia residents and to non-resident students having strong ties with West Virginia. Thus, while non-residents attending one of the West Virginia colleges or universities will be given careful review, their applications will have a lower priority consideration than those of a West Virginia resident. It should be remembered that out-of-state candidates will be regarded as residents by the medical schools in their home states.

According to the "Statistics" section on the website, 57 out of 115 people attended college in WV. There was nothing about how many people were residents.

From USNews for 2007:

In-State: 212 applied, 138 interviewed, 122 were accepted, 83 enrolled
Out-of-State: 2666 applied, 218 interviewed, 39 were accepted, 25 enrolled

So not a very good chance for OOS-ers. I have strong ties to the state and to the school, however, so I'm still going to give it a shot. 👍

I wonder how many oos were rejected pre-secondary. I don't have any ties so I'm trying to figure out if I should do the secondary

That number is probably the amount of secondaries that were completed. So the people that were rejected pre-sec. are not in that figure.

Chad, can you post the link to that USNews website? (Is it even from the Internet or is it from a book?) I'm interested in seeing stats for other schools.

um..i'm an oos too and now i'm not sure if I'm going to do the secondary. that third question is interesting...

unless you are so confident of at least an acceptance somewhere this cycle, it would be a great sin not to do the wv secondary. it looks more and more difficult to get in a medical school (or get an interview offer) nowadays, especially straight out of undergrads.

last cycle, there were about 46 oos matriculants. the majority of them (about 19) were from pa. 6-7 were graduates from u pitt, one from pen state and the rest were from many colleges that i have never heard of before. there were a few matriculants from ny *and nj, i believe* and about one or two from each of other neighboring states and their vicinity. i was surprised to learn that only two were from ca.

thanks for your advice. I'm from ny and don't have any ties to WV, I just liked the school...i hope that's enough

anyone else confused by the LOR requirements?

"The instructions for recommendation letters have raised many questions which can be clarified as such: we will accept committee letters/VirtualEval/Interfolio/pre-med advising packets, etc. without forms; we would prefer to have communication letters from outside sources, other than professors, and these should have the communication forms attached; and we do require the waiver form be attached to any individual letters sent along with the scoring form. "

does this mean if i have a committee packet that includes a non-professor that i'm okay? or do i need to have someone fill out the form? anyone know? i figured i'd see if anyone was in the same situation before emailing the admissions office

i'm pretty sure they're saying that even with a committee packet, regardless of what's in it, you still need to fill out that form and attach a letter. whether that letter has to be a different one from the packet...i don't know, but i think you can use the same letter.

It definitely helps to have a tie to the state of WV. But I'd have to conclude that it is not mandatory for every oos applicant. I'd also say that it helps to be from a home town closer and similar to Morgantown.

IMO, qualified oos applicants should have good chance to get in after their stress-free interview. People who got stranded on the waitlist were like lower grade diamond inwhich the flaws could be detected easily. They could be something like MCAT 28 or lower, VR about 6-7 or anything way below an average.

From what I've heard, besides U of Pittsburgh, only a small number of matriculants were from high profile or large colleges such as UCLA, U of Michigan....

BTW, I didn't know that the application process was somewhat annoying. Just don't let it turn you off. There were at least two oos applicants whose only acceptance was at this school last cycle.

Good luck.

So now that I'm getting around to completing this secondary, I just noticed something about the recommendation requirements. According to #3, if we have a pre-med committee, we still have to get someone to submit the communication evaluation?

I guess I can get my boss to send it in, but she's going to be out of town until Tuesday (at which point I'll be out of town).

I was informed by my own committee that I would have to get this communication evaluation done specifically for WVU.

I just added this school, does this mean I will get the secondary in like...December? Lol

i also have to do this. but, if i'm reading correctly, the two-week deadline is only for the secondary essays, application, etc....not LORs.

I submitted the electronic part two days ago, and I received the confirmation this morning. Also, I have not sent out the paper portion, so I know that that has not influenced my results.

Did anybody get an email receipt after submitting the online form? It said we would, but nothing's come into my inbox yet. 🙁

I got mine today. Submitted on 8/25. But, I think it said in the email that it could take up to 2 weeks to get it.

Has anyone decided not to send in a secondary for WV after receiving one? it's a tough choice.

For those who have already submitted the secondary...is the only thing you have to send via snail mail your check and photo??????

My 2 week deadline is on Monday (Labor DAY) which means no mail...and my essays aren't done yet. But if money and pic is all I have to send in mail, I could send it out tomorrow.

Also, the deadline means that for the stuff you submit online, you can submit that on the day of your deadline, right? Has anyone had issues submitting online?

was this a different boss than the one that wrote for your committee packet?

Here's from the site:

Print off, complete, and mail to the Office of Student Services (PO Box 9111, Morgantown, WV 26506, Attn: Beth Ann McCormick):
  1. Secondary Application Essays
  2. Secondary Application Signature Page
  3. Photo: Passport quality, 2" x 2" with your name and AMCAS ID number printed on the back
  4. West Virginia University Banner Application.
  5. Application Fee ($100 check) made payable to West Virginia University.

So there's more than just a photo and the check that need to be mailed in. As far as the deadline goes, I'm not sure what they're doing about the holiday. My guess would be that they'd just push them back a day because of no mail being run, but I can't say for sure. My deadline is Labor Day, and I'd be surprised if my packet has already arrived.

so i'm in state and have not yet heard ANYTHING from wvu and it's make me nervous... my amcas went through in the first week of august so it's been a month. any advice on if i should call the office or just wait??

I submitted online more than a week ago and haven't gotten a receipt 😕
Chad, did you end up ever getting one?
