From what I could glean, it is an integrated curriculum with lectures, pbl, and small-group learning stuff. Seems to work well for the students I talked to.

PLEASE HELP how do you study for ethics I took a course in grad school but everyone is saying review ethics how do you do that

Just common sense. You could read newspaper.

Do you know anything about when FIU students take their USMLE step 1? From their viewbook it seems like they take it later than normal...but I am probably misinterpreting it.

No, they do (or I guess they can). FIU team said that the push is to put more clinical stuff on Step 1 so they want their students to get more experience in before they take it. But they also said you can take it earlier if you want to.

just answer honestly. you might also not get ANY ethic questions (I didn't).

i absolutely love everything about this medical school. i wish i could just send in a "YOU'RE MY NUMBER ONE CHOICE, TAKE ME PLEASE" letter LOL

The turnaround time for this school is mind-boggling. Not sure if that's a good or bad sign? Certainly seems like they are interviewing quite a # of people given the fact that the class size is so small.

Complete 9/7. Interview invite 9/10. OOS.

🙂 Hi everyone. I submitted 9/7, and got an invite today for Oct. 19 (earliest available date). Anyone else going to be down there then?? Any advice besides "brushing up on ethics"?

Just wondering... OOS/IS? Stats?

Instate re-applicant, not a URM, LOTS of activities, PM you the rest

okay, i'm kinda nervous. i submitted my secondaries late (early septemberish) and got an interview invite from fiu about a week later, and my stats aren't that amazing. first i was really excited, thinking that i might actually get into med school and not have to be a hobo after all, and then i came on here and saw that everybody got an interview. don't get me wrong- i'm happy for everyone, but now i'm back to thinking that i'm so not getting into med school. it really doesn't make sense that their turnaround time is so fast unless they just decided to interview pretty much everyone.
the people who already went on interviews, do you know about how many people do they interview each day?

dont freakout! DO NOT believe everything u see in SDN u have to remember that the ppl who is on it is only a small part of the population of ppl who is applying. second, they interview about 12 ppl on monday and 12 on friday.

Invited yesterday 09/10, complete on 09/03. IS, for stats check out my mdapps. I'm try to schedule for early November because I will be back in FL for another interview.

Pretty sure they only offer 2 days/month - one Monday & one Friday. Right now they only have 2 October dates available. Unfortunately those dates both fall on midterms week for me, so I called about additional dates and they told me November dates won't be offered until late October.

So did you just choose one of the October dates?

It was a good school, and a good interview. But facilities definitely need work.

What do you mean by facilities need work? Compared to other med schools that you've seen? I'm a firm believer in that all you need to study is a brain, a book, and a cadaver (fridge too) lol...

they're constructing stuff. I want a medical school with some established buildings, labs, and facilities. FIU is really really new.

No. I tried emailing my professors about possibly taking my midterms early, but one is a lab and the prof understandably doesn't want to set up an entire practicum just for me. The other professor is just mean. 🙄 So I'm going to just have to wait until November dates are available & schedule then.

Haha, thanks! You know, I actually got warnings from people to stay away from this site, but self-esteem killing aside, it's actually pretty nice to be able to commiserate with other people going through the same brutal process. None of my friends are applying to med school so they don't understand...

Could I ask which hotel you ended up staying at for your interview?

And were you able to store your luggage someplace on campus during the interview/tour?

Courtyard Mariott. Yeah, you can have luggage anywhere on the campus.

So Im kinda worried....i just got my MCAT score back last night and I got:

PS: 9
VR: 9
BS: 9
WS: Q

27Q

I know that isnt amazing, but the breakdown isnt all over the place. FIU is my #1 program and I was just wondering if you guys think i have a shot at an interview with the score. Im an in-state applicant from orlando so maybe that will help.

When were you complete, and what are your other stats / activities?

my primary is verified, im sending in my secondary today. i have a 3.24 sgpa and cgpa (same). really big upward trend (started with a 2.3 Freshman year). i have ~100 hours of shadowing with an MD, ~30 with a DO (and still shadowing). founder and president of a student organization at my university, a bunch of volunteering, hopefully good LOR's (havent read them but im close with the people who wrote them). Head of a dance team, and some recreational activities (guitar, wakeboarding, watersports, lifting weights). so yea thats pretty much it.

Yeah...I don't know man. With your MCAT, you really need a high GPA to get you an interview. I don't want to be negative, but your stats are pretty tough to get an interview with, even though you have a great upward trend. Are you a URM, disadvantaged background, or a resident of South Florida? If you show true commitment to serving South Florida, FIU might be interested in you. Stats-wise though, you are below average. Sorry!

Edit: I just saw you said you were from Orlando. Have you applied DO?

Although schools do look at trend, I think in the end, it's the hard numbers that still matter most. No way to say this nicely. Had your GPA been much higher, it might have compensated for a slightly low MCAT given in-state residency and strong extracurriculars. But your MCAT is low & your GPA is below the 10th percentile for all Florida schools. And while FIU is a new institution which may accept students with slightly lower stats until their reputation is more solidified, FIU's class is still going to be extremely small (I heard 40 students?). So just by that fact alone, it could be difficult to get an acceptance. If you've already started the application cycle though, then go ahead and add FIU. But unless you're URM/disadvantaged, I'd say your chances of an acceptance at an MD school are not good at all. I'd consider applying primarily DO were I in your shoes.

I understand where you guys are coming from, I wasn't expecting miraculous answers that would make me think Im on top of the world, but I do think that I still have a shot. The unfortunate truth is freshman year was a real let down for me, and with consistent 3.8's the past 2 years, the gpa is pretty stubborn. Itll be tough, but if I can get that interview, than I know i can rock it. The unfortunate truth is, sometimes our numbers really dont say anything about being a good doctor, although they are really the only means that schools have in judging us. I just hope that they can see past my gpa and be like, u know wat...hes been doing excellent his last 2 years, and he seems to be a smart, approachable person who might have something to say. W.e. the outcome is, thanks a lot for the advice, I know not to get my hopes up.

p.s. I applied to 11 D.O. schools...i have no bias whatsoever...a doctor is a doctor, no matter how hard of a time some people have admitting it. but anyways thanks guys 🙂

You sound like you know what you're doing and that you are pretty committed. Best of luck to you. I also hope that they see past my GPA.

of course they will, you have a phenomenal mcat score, and your gpa isnt even that bad. You should look at it like this, if you truly want to be a doctor for the right reasons, you blew away the mcat, and you have a good interview than they should accept you. If they don't they its their loss not yours. Why would you want to be part of a program that labels you as a statistic rather than an individual, you know? Essentially, it means they are more concerned with programming robots, than producing warm-hearted doctors that people can really appreciate. I don't know about you, but I have been to many doctors that I have felt extremely uncomfortable around, and I have been to many doctors who made me feel as if they were family and that they cared about my health as much as my parents. Just know it shouldn't be about the numbers, although they are greatly emphasized. If you want it bad enough, it will shine through and you will be successful. I know you can do it, your in a much better position than I am. Best of luck 🙂

If you're in-state I think you might be okay. Hopefully, your GPA is on the high side.

Thanks - you are absolutely correct about the stats thing. However, I know that ultimately my GPA was my responsibility - a responsibility I could have handled better. I just wish I could convince medical schools that if given a chance, I can prove to them that I can handle this responsibility.

invite today! complete 17th August.

Canadian applicant...

Completed 9/11, invite today. The only interview dates offered were Oct 23rd or 26th, and I'm running an Ironman in Texas on the 25th. Ugh, it's gonna be a long weekend.

FIU IS AWESOME!!!! it is truly a unique and innovative medical school, plus everyone was really nice

Good Morning Guys and Gals,
It’s been a while since I last perused through the content on this site. I just wanted to say that I understand the excitement/ anxiety that most of you feel when reading some of the comments on this forum, it can be overwhelming at times. For those of you that make it down here for an interview, just relax, its Miami after all… no dingy/depressing city here.
In the mean time, if you have any questions, just shoot (can’t guarantee that I will be able to answer in a timely fashion, but I will do my best –med school seems to always get in the way J). Also, if you feel the need, feel free to PM me.
Hope to see all of you out here on your interviews! Good luck.
Proud member of the inaugural class

Well I think I managed to rearrange my schedule to accommodate an interview on 10/19. Anyone else interviewing that day? 🙂

Has anyone been on an interview yet? I have mine this monday and I have no idea what building I am suppose to go to. I dont even know what time my interview starts, they said interview session starts at 12 but that seems late. Did anyone get an interview packet with information?

You should have gotten a confirmation email.
