What was the name of the Priest/Doctor who came and spoke during the lunch. Really nice guy. I forget his name and title. Just curious. Thanks!!

I think we all had different people come to speak at lunch. Which day did you interview?

He was an attending at hospital that is predominately spanish speaking. He was some sort of head hancho, I heard he is a usual speaker after Mrs.Sullivan.

I'm pretty sure that's Fr Jim Duffy.

Who can comment on the daily schedule of M1's at Gtown...?

VCU is basically 9 to 1PM something like that at least...

I think (but I'm not sure) that Gtown is more of an all day thing - comments??

By the way, for what it's worth (and I hope that tuition is worth something), I'm definitely headed to Gtown - so it will be good to meet all of you...😀

I know for a fact that it varies much more than 9-1pm. There will definitely be days when you may have small groups as late as 6-7pm.

Gtown financial aid reminder email melted my heart... damn it alll!

haha same here. it said that the georgetown school specific fin aid for is due apr 15-anyone know if thats just for accepted students?

I was wondering if Second Look Day was only for accepted students? Interviewed recently (loved Georgetown!) and was wanting to bring some family down to see DC. 😎

Does anyone know where the second look day list is? Could you post it if you do. Thank you!👍

I am pretty sure that it is only for accepted students. I emailed them about the Epicurean dinner social thing and they said that I could not bring my fiance, because it was only for accepted people. Is anyone else planning on going to the Epicurean social?

I may stop by but I don't think I will stay the full two hours. My wife will be in DC with me and I don't want her to be all by herself for the whole day. Which way are you leaning?

I will probably go, at least for the first part. Also don't want my fiance running around DC by himself.

I plan on going. But I was wondering, do we have to pay for it?

I plan on going. But I was wondering, do we have to pay for it?

I'm pretty sure they will be "hosting" so I would be surprised if we were expected to pay. Always good to have cash on hand though, I guess (especially in DC).

I'll probably drop by for half an hour or so. I doubt we'll have to pay for the light snacks, but if you want a full meal then probably.

Hey Everybody!

Congrats to all of you that have recieved acceptances! I look forward to seeing you at second look day!

For those of you that are still on the waitlist be patient... I know it is stressful. I waited 5 months (Nov to april) but it was worth it. Also, be persistant. They want to accept the students who want to go here.... this a good thing. Ohhh and if it has been over 2 months since you wrote your CAP letter dont hesitate to send another one.

As for the class... We usually go from 9-12 everyday, typically science in the morning but can sometimes be a doctoring lecture. We ususally do not have that many lectures in the afternoon but will generally have small group or some other activity (Service Learning, Ambulatory care, or problem solving workshops). It is a nice schedule. I really enjoy going to school here and hope you all enjoyed your interview and are excited about potentially joining the Georgetown family. I must say... once you are here you will be a Hoya for life. 🙂

Best

Thanks for the encouraging words. I had been wondering about sending multiple CAP letters. I sent my first one in about a month and a half ago; maybe if I don't hear in a couple weeks I'll send another one. I really would love to go to Georgetown...

what rockk????

Any way we can make sure everything (background check, transcripts, etc) got to GTown? Or will they tell us if we're missing something?

haha same here. it said that the georgetown school specific fin aid for is due apr 15-anyone know if thats just for accepted students?

Everyone, regardless of acceptance status, has to submit by April 15th. The application is not hard if you have already done your taxes and FAFSA.

Anyone know where we're actually supposed to meet on Friday morning at the start of Second Look? The fishbowl, for old time's sake..? Haha..

Man I loved Georgetown. I really did. Would anyone comment on how long they take to usually come back with a desicion?

What are people thinking in terms of going to state school (cheaper) versus Georgetown (amazing match list, ranked, downright AWESOME).

I was considering HSPS to pay for it actually. lol

re: how long it takes to hear back post-interview, this is the most updated list we have I think: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showpost.php?p=9293047&postcount=1421
That should give you an idea of the time it has taken some of the people on this thread to hear back

Also, does anyone have a copy of the match list or some way to access it online? The only time I saw it was at the interview when they let us look in the binders, but we weren't given a copy. Just curious to see it more closely.

You should be able to get the past few years here:

That was great, thank you!

I would love a copy of the matchlist. I know its floating around in a specific discussion on matchlists but I forget where that was. Pre-Allo I think. Anyways, they had a great match list. But that has a lot to do with their rigorous grading curriculum etc.

hey everybody,

regarding the match list and "rigorous" curriculum as mentioned in above post.

I have done a fair amount of research regarding what school I would like to attend. As such I talked to a Georgetown MS2. He said gtown has the reputation for being one of the hardest on the east cost. a buddy of his at columbia said he was surprised how much harder gtown is. He also went on to say that Georgetown has a large focus away from primary care and internal medicine but that is what he will probably do. I find this 2nd part surprising as from my interview day, it seemed that more were medicine focused.

For me, I am not sure what to take of this info. Ha, My current opinion is well bummer but we are going to be killing when it comes to matching and clinical years. He said the Georgetown Step 1 score average is killer (from my experiences talking with med students they seem to have much more step 1 type info than admissions offices will give).

I have also talked to a few friends at cincy (very similar rank). They said their curriculum is killing then but their average step 1 score is higher than case western. By speculating, i think these schools that are ranked around 30-40 work their students much harder to compete with the top 20.

Just throwing that out there. I very much plan on being in DC come August but am going to wait until the week or 2 after this friday before making a final decision. I am really excited to be here on friday w/ 0 pressure.

Yeah, I definitely got the impression from the interview day that Georgetown is a really tough school compared to many of the others. Mrs Sullivan said something like "People say the students here are competitive... Well, we think medicine is a competitive field and we want people who want to work their hardest." I agree with her, but admissions people at other schools would never say anything like that haha. As you said, the added stress probably does pay off on Step I.

also remember that Mrs Sullivan does not F around 👍

Also would like to know this. I seem to remember them saying they would send us more information about a specific schedule for the day. All I've gotten is the invitation for the 3:30 social with the MS1 class. Anyone know where I can get more info? If I don't find anything else out by tomorrow afternoon, I am going to call them. I'll post back with my findings unless someone knows more than I do.

Is anyone else dyiiiing to get in? I'm on the CAP and have written 2 letters and 2 updates gtown is my life...optimistic but really not wanting to wait until May

yes, I am also dying to get in off the CAP. I have written one letter and plan on writing another by the end of the month. It sucks to wait, but at least it seems like we have a really good chance of getting in off the CAP if we show interest, which cannot be said for the waitlists at many other schools, where the waitlist is practically a rejection.

To all those on the CAP,

Be patient! I know... easier said than done. From what i determined from what i remember last year they let a lot of people off the CAP around Easter (I was one of them). The a lot more are let in from the CAP in May. Like all schools it is a waiting game. They need to see who actually takes there acceptance and unfort. they can keep them until May. If you want Gtown bad enough and you interviewed you will get it.

Also, I stayed in contact with Ms. Sullivan and she gave me advice on if and when to write another letter. She is an awesome person... dont hesitate to email her. I found her to be a great resource.

I wish you all the best! Relax and enjoy the next few months.

I missed the second look day. Could anyone who attended (or knows about Georgetown) comment on the hospital?

Thanks for the advice. I've been thinking about whether or not to email Ms Sullivan about when I should send another letter. It's hard because I want to tell Georgetown that they are my absolute only #1 choice and that I will 100% be going there if accepted, but since, at this point, there is still that ~5% chance I would end up somewhere else, I don't feel comfortable talking in such absolutes. It just feels dishonest. At the same time, I don't want to jeopardize my chances at Georgetown by seeming too noncommittal. Anyways I'm not going to mention this indecision to Sullivan of course; I'll just try to write as strongly-worded a letter as I feel is ethically acceptable. Hopefully I'll be in the April acceptance group...

I don't think that Georgetown is looking for everyone to be 100% certain. Just write something like, "As the interview season comes to a close, I can say with certainty that Georgetown would be the right place for me to grow into a physician." The most important thing will be supporting this statement. You don't need to say that it's the ONLY right place--they aren't going to throw out all the files that don't contain the phrase "one-hundred percent."

lol yeah guess you're right. good advice

I missed the second look day as well. Anyone who went, please let us know how it was!

I really loved the admin and philosophy of this school, but in all honesty was not too impressed with the med school facilities when I visited. Did anyone else get a similar vibe? The pouring rain that day probably did not help this hehe, but I want to make sure I'm not being biased. Students seemed happy though.

What made GT stand out to you?

Second look was really fun. They even took us out for pitchers and wings afterwards...

Facilities were definitely on the older side. There were some newer classrooms and some older ones, but they said that they were planning on updating some of them. The hospital is also older, but it is definitely on par with what I've seen around the country- not brand new, but not falling apart either. Keep in mind that if you go to Georgetown, you will rotate not only through Georgetown University hospital, but also one downtown and some others that I don't remember off the top of my head.

You guys are right about the students being happy there. Every student I met was really enthusiastic, including the ones that were about to take their USMLE step 1, which says something because I'm not sure how happy I would be staring down the barrel of a test like that. Even the students that just happened to walk by and see us were willing to tell us about the school and were totally honest about the pluses and minuses. I met a third year from Colorado who rode her bike up while I was waiting for my taxi. She told me she really enjoyed the school and DC.

Anyway, moral of the story, if you didn't come to second look, you missed out on some awesome wings and beer and on meeting some pretty cool future classmates. Facilities are older, but not falling apart. Students really are that happy.

I hope that answers your questions! I hope that I end up there, if I can afford it...

Agree w/ everything Comoroa said, although not the best wings I've ever had, but that's besides the point. It was fun.

Facilities are little old, but I never felt like the age of the facilities will have much impact on medical education. They repainted the M1 lecture hall and added a lot of new technology in the lecture hall according to some M2s. They already have plans printed of what renovations will look like outside the lecture hall, but I'm not sure when those are planned for.

IMO, the best part about the school is the people. Every person I talked to that day was very truthful and very happy. No one sugar coated anything and I never felt like anyone was trying to hide anything. Students were all very friendly with one another. Based on the interaction between students a faculty during the lecture I would say it is very open.

I really like the fact we have to do rotations all around the area. It makes you work in all sorts of environments and will give you a better idea of what kind of environment you want for residency. They made it sound like you'll essentially get your top three choices for residency, but I'm sure it's harder than it sounds. I think bottom line is the med school will make you into a GREAT clinician like it or not.

Georgetown School of Medicine C/O 2014 facebook group is up

Love the emphasis on how great the Georgetown clinicians are. I don't know if you were in Group B, CUBR, but we had this really heated discussion with Dr. Schwartz and the other two admin people about how US News and World Report rankings mean absolutely nothing. The people in our group emphasized how happy people were here and how great the clinicians are.

Agree on the wings, I was just in awe of the swan made out of a mango. I wanted to take it, but thought it was just for decoration until I saw someone else walking off with it.

I don't know if I am going here yet, but really want to, if finances work out. I think that I am going to have a "Draft Day" to decide what med school to go to. You know, when the college football players put on the hat from the team they are going to during the national broadcast... I will get a Colorado hat, a Northwestern hat, and a Georgetown hat and see where I end up....

The small group discussion for Group B did get pretty heated, lol. It started off a little slow so it kinda made things a little more interesting.

I didn't make it to the wings and pitchers sadly enough. I had a guest with me and it was only for Georgetown accepted students. It was great getting to know DC this weekend; good eating places, lounges, neighborhoods. Overall I had a good day there despite the bad weather. The students were nice and all seemed happy with their choice. The faculty members that I spoke with were great and I enjoyed talking with them about random things and why I should matriculate at Georgetown. The lecture that we sat in on was very good and the Dr. was very funny. I have to see what type of money I get in the end as this will greatly influence my decision.

Is it just me or was the number of accepted students there less than what you would have expected?

Not really. I actually expected there to be less accepted students there, just because it is so stinking expensive to fly over and visit DC. I think Second Look definitely made me look at Georgetown through a very favorable lens, though, so I hope those of you who didn't go are able to make a good decision even though you weren't there.

The lecture was awesome! I don't want to be naive and think that all lectures will be like that, but that guy made norovirus sound fascinating. And seriously, who puts their septic tank uphill of their well? Gross. I talked to some students and they said that the guy who invented the HPV vaccine (Georgetown faculty member!) comes and lectures on vaccinations and viral infections some times and is apparently a great speaker. They also have Pelligrino, the famous ethicist, come and talk some times too.

TaylorMDhopeful, I think I know who you were! Didn't one of the admins ask your guest a question during the panel discussion? She seemed a little shocked that they did.

Yea, I didn't really think about that. Since i'm from nyc and its just a cheap 4 hour bus ride (cheap chinatown bus ride for most major cities on the east coast) I think I automatically assume that things are cheaper than they are. I remember seeing a couple california kids that made it out there.

My guest asked me if all of the lectures are like that one because if so then I should definitely go to class if I matriculated there. But I think it was staged :meanie:. He made GI viruses really interesting.

I heard about the HPV vaccine inventor being there from time to time during the tour. I enjoyed the tour and I really like Georgetown's campus overall and the area around it.

Yup, that was me. I was really shocked too, lol. Since they knew she wasn't an accepted student (or at least the lady who asked the question knew) and they asked her what she liked about Georgetown. They asked her that because she was furiously scribbling notes about Georgetown on a pad so we could talk about the school later. Haha, seeing her face was priceless though but she is a good sport about things like that. Did it trouble you any that they didn't have a solid answer to the question that the guy posed before that?

The students that I talked to said that was one of the easier lectures, there wasn't too much material covered. I wonder how they test for a subject like that.

The question before it was why he should come to GU over state school, right?I think by the panel not answering the question straight was kind of the point. I was in group B too. Everyone will have their own reasons for wanting to go there. There are couple things everyone likes then the rest is made up of each person likes and dislikes. Bottom line, can't go wrong with going to a medical school in the US, just where will make you happier in terms of fin aid, living situation, family situation, etc...

Comoroa, if you're going to do the draft day thing, you might want to do it in a hat store so you don't have two extra hats left over haha. You should send a tape of it in along with your deposit, haha.

Yeah, the panel did kind of dodge the question, but I agree with CUBR- go to the place that is a better fit for you. But really what could the panel say besides that? I did like that they didn't dodge the money question. She was right when she said that if the debt load caused you and your loved ones undue emotional turmoil, Georgetown isn't a fit for you. Someone just really needs to hand me a very large check and say "Here! Go to whatever med school you want!"

Yeah a hat store would probably be the best way to go. Unfortunately, since I'm on the West Coast, they probably won't have hats from East Coast schools....maybe I can make my own with cheap Walmart hats and a sharpy.

Agreed! I thought they addressed the question pretty well, actually. It's not like they can make the decision for us...some people would be happier having more debt and going to the school they really like, while others would feel better about having less debt and going to the 2nd or 3rd best "fit," etc., it just depends on the person's own values and what they want out of med school.

I figure, I'm going to be in debt regardless of where I go - not knowing what my future financial situation will be, I'm not going to let the difference in the amount of debt I'll have hold me back from where I want to go. Personally, I'd have more regret turning down the option where I think I will get the best training and be happiest. But like I said before, it's different for everyone, it just depends on what you want.

It is really helpful to read the posts from everyone who was able to attend second look. I'm out in Utah and I already liked what I saw when I interviewed, so I chose not to fly out. It sounds like it was a good experience. I'm doing the Air Force HPSP, so cost of school is not an issue. My wife and I do worry about how expensive it is to live in DC, but it's a lot easier to handle when I'm getting a living stipend. She would just have to work to make up the difference. I'm not naive enough to think that the living stipend will cover cost of life in Georgetown, though. I've lived in expensive cities before, but being in Utah for a few years has spoiled me. Last summer I paid $100 a month for a 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom spot in a house that was a 2 minute walk from school. It would be nice if Georgetown could subsidize student housing on that level, but that's the price of the GUSOM experience.

I think of the money issue as an investment. If I go to a better school where I feel happier, then I'll do better on the boards, get into a better residency, and end up making more in the long run.

Plus, the difference between Georgetown and my state's only public school isn't that big (I think Oregon might have the most expensive state school EVER).
