Rejected yesterday by email.

I was a reapplicant.

Is it just me, or does anyone else find it a bit rude to be screened twice for a secondary and not get interviewed at least once?

If MSU CHM didn't screen their applicants I wouldn't think twice about it, but since they do it really gives someone false hope . . .

It wasn't my first choice anyway.

MSUCHM gives all applicants a secondary, at least according to the last two MSAR editions...Wayne is the only school in Michigan that screens. Sorry to hear about your rejection though. Were you IS/OOS?

You're right . . . it still pisses me off, though . . . my stats put me right in their range, at least according to the MSAR.

I'm IS.

Did you express any interest in, or show that you could be a good match with their mission? I think they're more into that kinda thing than they are stats.

Interview invite received yesterday, scheduled for 10/29/09....🙂

Just got invited to an interview for next Thursday!! Website not updated yet. My interview was an opening due to a reschedule as they asked if I could make it and apologized for the short notice. NICE 🙂 VERY HAPPY 😀. In state 3.66/34R.

Got the invite this morning for 10/29. IS MSU grad, stats are around the school median.

See you guys next week!

Yes . . .

Sadly for many of their applicants, MSU is a big niche school. It is difficult for us to speculate as to why you were not accepted without knowing more than that your numbers were in their range. Few people get accepted to MSU without either showing significant interest in serving underserved areas or who come from those areas and are thought likely to go back there.

I wish you luck on your application trail.

Interview Invite today-OOS. Anyone know OOS stats? tuition?

Congrats on the interview!!

OOS tuition = $65,673 - Yes, that's right and $92,794 with everything else included...that's according to the MSAR anyway.
As far as their stats for OOS, it looks like 9-10 in each MCAT section and 3.5 or higher GPA (MSUCHM website).

Are you on the admissions committee?

Thanks DRIN, any idea how many OOS are interviewed/accepted?

I know OOS matriculates usually hoovers around 25% of the class, though its been higher the last couple of years. That was for a class or 150, this year the class will be 200 so I'm sure they'll accept quite a few.

Fall 2008 Admissions Statistics
Total admissions data 4828 applied, 510 interviewed, 280 were accepted, 156 enrolled

In-state admissions data 1262 applied, 323 interviewed, 155 were accepted, 115 enrolled

Out-of-state admissions data 3566 applied, 187 interviewed, 125 were accepted, 41 enrolled

looks like getting the interview for OOS is the biggest hurdle...

No, but I interview applicants and I am in MSU's class. They tell us to look for those aspects in the interview, and weight them heavily. They're also weighted heavily in the pre-interview screening, which I've seen the evaluation form for.

I also can look at classmates of mine, as well as people I knew during undergrad who applied there and either did or did not get in. I knew one person, for example, who had well above average numbers but expressed a lot of interest in going into a particular subspecialty, and he never got an interview, even as IS. He's now an MS1 at Michigan, which is widely considered much more competitive. Granted, this is anecdotal, but it is still telling. On the other hand, I know that a lot of the people in our class with "less competitive" numbers are from disadvantaged backgrounds, either urban or rural.

Overall, what I meant is that for MSU, numbers aren't everything. They're very mission-based.

I took my MCAT on September 4th. I got a 25 (11, 6, 8). My first MCAT was a 23 (8,7,8) on May 28th. I have received secondary apps from Michigan State . Is it worth filling out the secondary? Does my score, especially the 6 in verbal, hurt my chances? Is it too late for those scores to have a solid chance?

Let me know what you guys think.

You have very low MCAT and chances are very low unless you are in-state, very high GPA (>3.9), and excellent other stuff.

I recieved my MSU secondary application last week of July, and turned in the 60 dollars. (I noticed they had a 2 week deadline for paying the money, or the whole application would be cancelled)

I didn't fill out the secondary application because I was studying for the MCAT and didn't want to do a crappy job at essays and mess up my MCAT score too . (MCAT score was already very low, 23, so didnt think writing an essay at that point would really affect me).

Now, I am thinking about filling out the secondary. Is it too late? Do they have a deadline on how long you can take after you pay the secondary fee?? 😕

You have two weeks from the time you pay to submit the secondary. I don't know if this is an absolute deadline or just a guideline.

hey everyone. question. I'm IS and was complete on 8-13. Has anyone who was complete around that time gotten an interview? thanks!

they "recommend" that you turn it in within 2 weeks but thats not an absolute deadline! i think since you have already paid the fee, it wont hurt to submit the essays, you will still be considered so i say give it a shot.. good luck 🙂

I think the number accepted is really high, because most people drop MSU once they get into other schools. MSU is a great school, but the tuition is wayyyy too high and so I can see why they need to accept A LOT of people

There are schools that accept even more applicants (compared to their class size) than MSU.

I would go ahead and submit the secondary application. I feel like you have nothing to lose at this point.

FIRST INTERVIEW INVITE!!! GOD IS TRULY GREAT!!! KEEP HOPE ALIVE PLEASE!!!

OOS 2.8 UG/ 4.0 SMP/ 28 MCAT (non-urm)
App Complete 8.05
Int Invite 10.20
Int Date 11.10

I am definitely believing that MSU is a niche school. I would like to think that my personal statement, past awards, leadership roles, and activities all indicate what kind of physician I will be and who I will serve. **I think that my SMP gpa and letters of rec (MD, MD who is a professor from my SMP, and two Ph.D's from my SMP) helped to offset my UG gpa (which has a huge upward slope).

congrats =)) are you in state?!

nope... out of state, here!

Congrats on your interview!! I hope I hear some good news soon too. Did your status message say:

"Your application is complete and has been forwarded to the review committee for a preliminary review. Thank you for your patience as we carefully consider your application."

until you received your invite?

Also, for anyone who might know, are there specific days of the week the admissions committee extends interview invites?

ACCEPTED!! So excited 🙂 I can't believe it!!! Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear back!

Nice -- congrats. See? I told you not to worry. Maybe I'll see you there. I will be going there for sure.

Good job; there's more to a good applicant than just numbers. Good luck with the interview; keep us posted.

I was complete 8/4, got an interview invite 9/10, and interviewed 9/24.

Yes... my status message said that exact same thing for about 2.5 months until I received notice of my interview (via email and website status change).

Wow! I thought the "carefully consider your application" was just something admissions committees claimed to do. I guess at MSUCHM, they really mean it. I have only been complete there for a couple of weeks so I guess I have some more waiting to do...

I can log-in the page and it says all the information with the bullet points, but where my status usually is, I get this "fatal message" with all this computer jargon. Anybody else receiving this right now?

I usually check on my PC but right now I'm on my girlfriend's Mac, but I've checked with firefox, safari, and internet explorer, and getting the same "you're computer is about to blow up while simultaneously infecting the world with swine flu" message. 😱

nvm. its working now. no status update from last time though 👎thumbdown

So AMCAS screws up & gives me a 33M & on recoring 33N (I think they still have it wrong. I should sue them to really give me the right score). Anyway, the question is, should I call up every program I am applying to, to make sure they see my new shiny score or will the programs automatically consider my new score.
Any experiences/suggestions?

Honestly, neither an M nor an N are good scores. However, the writing sample score is essentially not considered for applicants. I wouldn't think this worth updating your schools. Most schools won't care. If anything you would just be drawing extra attention to a bad score.

I concur. You're being kind of a weiner, no?

If your scores would have gone up -- even by a miniscule ammout -- would you have just sat quietly without asking for advice from colleagues? Bouncing ideas was what I thought, was one of the reasons of this forum.

dude stop posting this in every ****ing school specific thread. So annoying.

I agree. I have an N myself and don't really know why. I have always been a good writer, but apparently I can't write 2 good enough essays for the powers that be at the AAMC in an hour...oh well, at least I got to show that I'm not a terrible writer through my essays.

I was complete on 8/4. Are there still interviews being given out or is that a rejection by now?
