Thanks for the clarification, hobbes. Are you speaking specifically for OHSU or in general? I guess I never was aware of the distinction, as I always thought holds were only given out pre-interview. Thanks

At OHSU, after the interview, your filed is reviewed and you are given a final score (0-10 or something). If you are above their cut-off, you get an acceptance (only a small portion of the class, ~10% [?], gets this). If you are below a certain other threshold, you get rejected. If you are between, you get placed on hold (i.e., "post-interview hold"). As the season progresses, they lower the bar for acceptances, and more people get accepted. Sometime in May, they stop doing this and create a ranked wait list. Most people are placed on hold after their interview.

This is OHSU specific to the best of my knowledge.

This process has been described in more detail and with more accuracy before on SDN. You can try to find the older threads.

Alright, thanks! Knowing that OHSU accepts such a low percentage of people right out of the interview is a bit reassuring, haha.

Just accepted today, IS, interviewd 12/16. First acceptance!

do any of you guys have the number to the admissions office by any chance?

interviewed 1/12/10
placed on hold today- bummer! will I really have to wait until May to hear...?
I'm already going crazy..

I spoke with the admissions office yesterday and this is what they told me:

The deadline on Feb 15th is when they are going to let anybody who hasn't had any status updates since they submited thier secondary know if they are going to be placed on hold for an interview. If you are currently on hold for an interview that does not mean you will get one but you are still in the running. She said the latest dates for interviews run through the end of March so if you don't get one by then, you will not be considered this cycle. She also explained to me that the way they award interviews is a complex process and she couldn't tell me just from looking at my file what the likelyhood would be, so if you call to ask about it there is nothing they will be able to tell you. She also said everyone else that has already been interviewed will know where they stand by May 15th at the latest.

What about at the earliest? 🙂

Congrats cleanthes! I also just got an acceptance offer!

Interviewed: 12/16
Accepted: 2/10
GPA: 3.75
MCAT: 32
IS, reapplicant

ZaccaZ,
Thats great you got in. What kind of experiences did you have, Major?, Science GPA, Undergrad University. Im an IS but I go to California polytechnic state university in San luis obispo california. I am just curious because im applying June. I have a 3.86 and 34N on the Mcat. I want to know how much you think being an IS helped you get in.

Just received interview invite today. Extremely stoked! Btw, I am OOS. They gave me a a few dates, and I have yet to call and chose one of them. One date was a week before the others. Should I go for the earliest one? or does it not matter.

Also, wondering where should one stay, i have not seen much info on this thread.

There does not seem to be much interview feedback either or am I looking at wrong place.

Also, anyone know where to find the residency match, just curious to check it out.

And, did anyone who interview meet with a rep from the Center of Diversity and Multicultural affairs?

Thanks. Well I think being IS helps, but from what I've heard, IS/OOS doesn't matter as much once you get to the interview stage.

I was a biology/psychology major at University of Oregon. I have a lot of research experience, and quite a bit of volunteering/clinical work, too. Both of my interviews went really well, which I think was the biggest factor for me.

Obviously I don't know about your extracurriculars, but based on your scores you would definitely be competetive.

curious... has anyone interviewed, been placed on hold and then accepted? Or, does everyone who is placed on hold stay that way until about May?

I think the majority of acceptances are from the hold pool... Good luck and congrats to those who have received interviews and or acceptances!

It doesn't matter. Pick the day that works best for you.

Also, wondering where should one stay, i have not seen much info on this thread.

You can stay with a student host, at one of the hotels downtown/in SW, or in one of the bed and breakfasts scattered close to campus. Hosting info should be sent to you, and google should be all you need to find the latter.

There is an "interview feedback" tab on the top of the SDN page. Try looking there.

Also, anyone know where to find the residency match, just curious to check it out.

You'll get a list in your packet on interview day. I don't know where (or even if) it's posted anywhere online.

And, did anyone who interview meet with a rep from the Center of Diversity and Multicultural affairs?

A chunk of applicants do. It really is 100% up to you whether you would like to or not.

Thanks URhere for your help. So it does not matter what day I choose?? I will try to pick the earliest date since I thought they are rolling admissions. I tried calling them and left them a message with my preferred date, and tried calling them throughout the day hoping someone would pick up, but no answer!

I thought they are rolling admissions.

OHSU is not a traditional rolling admissions school. They accept only a small portion of interviewees directly after their interviews and most are placed on post-interview hold. OHSU does not have the problem of giving out most spots before some candidates even interviewed - there are spots that have yet to be offered even at the end of March when all interviews are over.

So, basically: If you are a great match for them, you are likely to be accepted immediately no matter when you interview. If you are borderline, you will end up in the hold pool whether you choose the first date or not.

curious... has anyone interviewed, been placed on hold and then accepted? Or, does everyone who is placed on hold stay that way until about May?

people on hold do not stay on hold until may. from what they explained on my interview day, everybody is scored following their interview (i think they said it was 80% your interviews/committee discussion about you, 20% some computer program that gives a # purely based on stats. either that or 90/10). at the beginning of the year, they'll set a certain bar for acceptances and rejections. everyone else goes on hold. as the interview season progresses, the acceptance bar lowers and those on hold above that new bar are now accepted, as well as new interviewees scoring above the bar. so the bar now isn't the same as what it was in october. by the end of the interview season, they'll have accepted a total of ~120 students (however big their class size is set for the year). everyone else on hold goes on the waitlist, ranked by their overall score. at that point, waitlist movement occurs only as accepted students drop, so that they never have more acceptances out than they have seats since they really don't want any over-enrollment.

so basically, if you're on hold, you should find out before may whether you're accepted or whether your hold turns into a waitlist.

So pre-interviewee here: my status page changed to "A final decision for the MD program has been sent to you via US Mail."

So that's basically a rejection right? sux. I really wanted to check this school out. that makes me sad🙁🙁🙁

I just want to confirm what I have read before on this threads on other places.
At the interview stage there is no difference between OOS and IS, right?
According to msar stuff and other places, ~550 are interviewed and 225 acceptances?

Invite today for mid march.

Congrats! You might actually get to see Portland's pretty weather instead of the dreary winter rain.

"A final decision for the MD program has been sent to you via US Mail."

Yeah, that sounds like a rejection to me - sorry you didn't have the chance to come to interview.

OHSU claims that their is basically no difference between IS/OOS after you have been invited to interview, but it may be worked into the grading formula somewhere as a minor factor.

As for the numbers, I am not sure how many acceptances were offered last year, but I know that the number of offers has been decreasing over the past few years (last year there was very little waitlist movement due to the high number of accepted students who decided to matriculate). I wouldn't be surprised if the acceptance numbers you cite are a little bit high

same here!! it cant be good! good luck with your other schools!! :luck:

That person is exactly right. They do offer 200+ acceptances. Last year there was great movement on the waitlist. I believe it made it to #35.

Before last year, the waitlist movement fluctuated but always reached somewhere between the 60s and 90s. Last year was a big shock for just about everyone.

I noticed a similar trend at other schools which usually pulled a good number of applicants from the waitlist. I particularly remember Creighton since they sent apology emails.

me too🙁 Sucks because my folks are considering a move up there, and I would have loved to be closer to them! Oh well....

I received a interview invite not too long ago and it was weeks after I sent a update letter via snail-mail.

I don't know if these two are related.

I scheduled for mid-march but I'm thinking I might cancel. OHSU would be a dream school to go to but I think I found the one. 😍

Congrats! I'm so happy for you! There is no better feeling than getting to be in that one place you dreamed of (Mind sharing where?)

University of Southern California!

Especially coming from Seattle, that sun sounds really good right about now!

Is anyone still waiting to hear back from them? I still show as complete, with the "up to 12 weeks" message.. I know they said they were going to let everyone know by today, so is anyone else in the same position?

Yup I'm in the same boat.

Hello everyone. I just interviewed at OHSU last week and I wanted to send Thank You notes to my interviewers. Is there a way to do that through email? Do I have to do it through snail mail?

Has anyone had trouble setting the interview date? I called the number on the interview invite email and left a voice message last Wednesday but haven't yet received a call back. I would like to know if there is just a delay in the response or I somehow got fell through the cracks..

Call again. They should get back to you within 24 hours.

Thanks for the nudge to call again. I called and found out that Katy was sick last week and wasn't able to return calls. At least I got a hold of her today and set the interview in March.

Sure no problem. Glad you were able to get your interview scheduled. 🙂

hmmmm I left a voicemail to schedule an interview on Friday, and considering the holiday and the fact that they said not to call twice...I'll wait a bit longer to call again

Has anyone that was complete that was supposed to find out yesterday emailed them? I haven't heard anything and was thinking about contacting them but I'm not sure if I should or not? I was thinking about waiting a couple more days but maybe I should try to contact them. It seems weird to give a deadline of when they would let us know and then there is silence. What do you all think?

I agree... I tried calling, but got their voicemail.

Yeah I got this too 🙁 so I'm guessing it's a no... I live in Minnesota so mail from Oregon takes a while; has anyone who got this message received anything?

Which number did you call Katy or the main line?

What is their main line, cannot find it.

Just got my rejection today via snail mail. I guess after 18 weeks of being complete, they decided I didn't fit the criteria as an applicant. It's extremely confusing how it took them this long to come to a decision pre-interview. Frankly, this process has been extremely unprofessional on their side. I'm not that upset because I'll be attending IU in the fall! I'm sure my ability as an MD will not be disadvantaged! 😛
