After 11 Weeks, just got the message :

Your file has been screened and is currently on hold for an interview, pending further review. Due to the competitiveness and size of the applicant pool, some applicants are placed on hold until the entire pool has been assessed. As soon as a final decision has been made we will notify you immediately. This decision may not be rendered until the end of February.
🙁

Is this common or do most people with this message get rejected?
When did you apply? I applied like Nov1 and haven't heard anything... I figured I wouldn't for a while, but that would give me a little heads-up to know when to start lurking looking for it 😉

Don't get your hopes up too much. I've had that same message for almost 2 months. I did call Lauri today, because it has been like that for so long, and she said that people with that message should be hearing in the next three weeks whether they got an interview or they are done for this cycle. She said the people with that message take up the last of the interview slots. So on the bright side if you have that message you aren't straight up rejected yet!

anyone know of a good hotel within walking distance of ohsu? thanks

I have been complete since 09/14/09...should I call? is there any hope?

yeah i've been complete since early october (not as long as you) and haven't heard back. figure i should just give up hope.

I've been complete since September and am in-state, and I'm still on hold. I hope there is hope, because this is really frustrating and all this checking back over and over and obsessing and waiting is getting old.

I don't have the hold status yet either...it just says that they are still looking over my application...

I'm not trying to be entirely contrary here... but does it really speak well for the school that they are notoriously slow getting back to people? There was a time when I said I would definitely go here if they accepted me. Now, I think by the time I get an interview invitation I'll be settling in somewhere else.

Is it just this year? Is it because of the recently updated application system? Or is everything there run like this? I don't know whether to keep hoping they contact me, or just make plans for next year at another school.

Sorry for the rant, I'm just ready to be done with the application madness, get out of limbo, and settle in somewhere.

It's been 7 weeks now for those of us that interviewed on 12/3, has anyone heard anything?

I haven't heard anything yet. I'm hopeful of hearing something by the end of the day, since maybe the committee met yesterday.

What number did you guys use to call to check in on the status of your application? I keep calling and no one is picking up???

Complete: 10/13

Current status message:
Your file is currently being screened in the interview selection process. Please note that due to the large number of files in our applicant pool, this screening may take up to 12 weeks. As soon as a decision is made on your application, you will be notified. The Admissions Committee interviews prospective candidates from October through mid-April.

My personal experience is that OHSU is taking no longer than other schools. For example, I was marked complete at USC Keck on August 31 and received an interview invite January 21 (yesterday). I did not hear a word from USC during those five months. Another example is WashU in St.Louis - I completed their secondary in mid-August and received a rejection (pre-interview) on Monday. It took both WashU and USC five months to decide. In contrast, I received an interview invite from OHSU 30 days after my application was marked complete. The variability seems high for all schools.

Sorry for the rant, I'm just ready to be done with the application madness, get out of limbo, and settle in somewhere.

I sympathize completely! My girlfriend and I applied to "cities" together, and she needs to decide which law school to attend by mid-March - I may not have a single acceptance by then! We have our fingers crossed for Portland, Oregon.

I feel the same way. I was psyched to apply here and hear back, but now I'm hoping somewhere else accepts me.

I know some students applying for the dental school and they're having the same slow process, so it might just be the school.

Interviewed Dec 3 and just got an email acceptance from Lori. I had pretty low stats (29R MCAT and 3.5gpa) so I must have aced the interview. Im IS and it's my second time applying. Good luck everyone else. If it makes anyone else's day I probably will be declining.

Congrats LD1234Him. I just joined the hold group so it seems like decisions for 12/3 interviewees should be up.

@ anfielder - did you get an email as well or was it status page?

anyone know of a good hotel within walking distance of ohsu? thanks

I don't know of any hotels located on "the hill". I stayed at the Inn at Marquam Hill, which is a bed & breakfast type establishment (super nice and cozy) that is a short 10 minute walk from campus. Here's their website: http://www.innatmarquamhill.com/

You get a made-to-order breakfast and if it's raining, the owner will drive you to campus and drop you off. They also utilize a shuttle service that is cheaper than a taxi to/from airport. Get the info when you make your reservation. I would call soon though because they apparently book up very quickly.

We're in a very similar dilemma - I am also trying to relocate with someone else, and it's tricky!

Most of the other schools have been very fast, but I guess there is one other I applied to that is insanely slow. The difference is that as soon as I had other acceptances I canceled my interview there. I just can't do that for OHSU. Can't give up hope. Pathetic... They should call me just for loyalty points. 🙂

I'm in the same situation as you folks. I was complete 10/13 (a.k.a. more than 12 weeks ago) and my status still says "Your file is currently being screened in the interview selection process." I'm thinking I'll give them a call next week to see what's up.

I love Portland and OHSU seems like a great school, but they do seem to love to keep applicants waiting. =/

I got in this weekend (interviewed 12/1) and I don't have terribly impressive numbers. ~3.5 science GPA and a 33T. I am in-state, though, so I'm sure that helped. Hope you get in off hold!

Hey, congratulations on your acceptance. Did they really send out your acceptance email over the weekend?

I'm not trying to be entirely contrary here... but does it really speak well for the school that they are notoriously slow getting back to people?

I think that there are two types of slow when it comes to OHSU or any other school - there's slowness of reviewing applications, and slowness of moving people from the hold list to a more permanent pile.

When it comes to reviewing applications (marking people complete, etc), I think that slowness is a bad thing - it means that there isn't enough manpower available, and that can be a bad thing.

However, OHSU is mostly the second kind of slow - and I think it is for a very respectable reason: they do not want to reject good applicants just because of the rolling admissions process. People stay on hold for a long time, just because OHSU really wants to interview everyone before making the bulk of their decisions. Is it a pain? Yes, but if you are one of the applicants who gets in with a late application or a low score I think you have OHSU's slow process to thank for that.

I may be biased, but I think it's a good kind of evil.

Interested in the price of student housing on the OHSU campus, any ballpark figures? I know Portland has more expensive housing than most.

OHSU itself does not have student housing. I live down the hill from OHSU (toward the river). It takes me 12-15 minutes to walk up to OHSU. There is an abundance of housing within walking distance, and even more within biking distance. I'd say that as long as you're willing to share a place, you'll get away with $300-$400/month in rent for your own bedroom in a decent house near OHSU.

If you want to live by yourself, then double the figure. For example, my girlfriend and I live in a spacious 1 bedroom hardwood apartment with a walk-in closet, its own laundry, dishwasher, garbage disposal, etc. - all your modern amenities. Rent is 930 / month, which is definitely on the pricer side. Since we're both taking time off from college we can afford it right now, though if we stay in Portland for school we'll probably keep the place since we have invested so much into it (added shelves, furniture etc. etc.). As I said earlier, it's within 15 minutes walking of OHSU, and there are a few OHSU residents who live in the building.

I hope this helps!

Very helpful. Thank you for all of the information. Although I would love to get my own place it may turn out to be too pricy.

Any other 12/3 interviewees still waiting to hear back from admissions?

My application was complete Nov 6; they didn't notify my of any change in my status- I just found out by checking daily.

I have been complete since 09/14/09...should I call? is there any hope?

You should definitely call- they are supposed to at the very least update your status to "on hold for an interview" after 12 weeks of being completed.

I was planning to call today (complete 10/29, just passed my 12 weeks) and when I was looking for a phone number on the admissions web page I saw this message, updated today:

"We are still reviewing applications. If the status portal shows that your file is complete and you have not heard from us yet, we will send you a notification by February 15th. Thank you for your patience."

That, combined with the fact that I spent 15 min clicking around and still could not find a phone number, led me to not actually call 🙂

Anyone know the average step I scores? I honestly really liked OHSU, but got the feeling that the school does not put step preparation as a top priority and that students have little time to prep.

I think they said they're about the national average.

I distinctly remember my student tour guide saying (1) OHSU's step 1 scores are slightly below the national average and (2) that lectures can focus too much on the lecturer's narrow area of expertise, which leads to some students skipping entire lecture series on a topic and instead studying the topic from the Step 1 book.

Here is a flow sheet on how they assess the MD program at OHSU:

http://euston.ohsu.edu/academic/assessment/documents/SoMMDAssessmentFrameworkforwebsite.pdf

It looks as though these factors are listed in order of importance (since step 2 scores are higher up on the list, in end of program assessments, than step 1 scores are, under interim progress assessment). If this is correct, step 1 scores are low on the list and as a result OHSU would not place much focus on them as opposed to other markers.

As a side note I find it interesting that OHSU preaches that it doesn't matter when you interview yet they use interview number as an assessment of their program (although this might just be to ensure that they accept the same number of people through the whole cycle).

So I have been complete since 12/14, not on hold, but still being "screened". I guess I should probably give up the very little hope I had for an interview in the first place. Applied to 20+ programs and only 2 interviews 🙁 This whole process is getting old..so much stress before med school, I can only imagine it getting worse.

Yup, guess I'm a little bitter:laugh:

😀Accepted today!!! Interviewed 12/15, OOS, 3.9 GPA, 29Q

Yeah, I have been complete for a while also. But this "notification being sent out in FEB" that is going to be sent out, you think its all going to be rejections?

No way! They can't be all rejections. I don't know why there is a set date like that, but even people who submitted early had a long time to wait before they heard anything. They probably just do a big push at the end so they can get the interviewing done.

... just trying to be optimistic 😀

Yepp Melicopter is right, I was complete in mid September and didn't get my interview invite until mid November. Then interviewed in December. So it just takes awhile.

I can't remember if I already asked in this thread (because I'm OCD about this info and ask in almost every thread)--> Those that got interviews, mind sharing some stats and if IS or OOS?
Thanks!😀

Getting an interview invite 1 month after being complete is not considered "awhile". Many of the people here have been complete since September or earlier and have yet to hear a word... hence the overwhelming sense of frustration permeating this thread. 😛

Went in to get some clarification on parking permits and get a new one (I had a special case) and found out a lot of interesting information that I thought would interest people looking at OHSU for med school (as far as the parking situation is concerned):

Parking fees:

1st and 2nd year students: $49/month

3rd year: $133 per 5 week rotation

4th year: $106 per 4 week rotation

There are some incentives for carpoolers and people who bike (bike incentives only apply if you live 2 miles away or further). There are also discounted passes if students choose to take public transportation.

Violation costs:

Area permit abuse: $125/plus felony conviction if permit is altered (OHSU considers their parking permits government documents)

Parking in permit required zone with no permit: $60

Improper meter reciept display: $34

Meter runs out: $34

Parking in patient parking: $100

If your vehicle alarm goes off and you don't respond: $50

This wont make a difference for the >55% of med students who's parents have an income in the upper quintile (AAMCAS, 2008). They could have mommy and daddy pay for it. But for the >5% of med students who's parents have an income in the lowest quintile, every dime counts.

IS with a 30/3.69. Complete mid October, invite mid November, interviewed 12/1, and put on hold six weeks later.

Yeah I have a feeling a post-interview hold is in my future considering others who interviewed on my day have been accepted already. Oh well. I'm OOS, so didn't really expect much.

What does it matter how much our parents make? We're adults. Our mommies and daddies aren't going to pay our parking tickets. We're all broke together. That's why it's crazy that schools base financial aid on our parents' incomes. If my parents make $30,000 or $500,000, I'm still in the exact same boat. I'm filling out financial aid forms right now and thinking, wtf??? It's actually kinda insulting.

wow! what nazi was in charge of the parking penalties?

.... thought would interest people looking at OHSU for med school (as far as the parking situation is concerned)..

Many, if not most, students don't pay for parking. You generally don't want to drive up and down the hill too often due to traffic. Here are some options:

-- Live on the hill, ~$20/yr city parking permit
-- Bike to the Tram, they PAY you $50 for every 30 trips
-- Take the Bus/MAX/Streecar, ~$300 for a YEARLY pass through the school
-- Motorcycle, free on the street next to the Plaid or about half the cost for the OHSU permit

It is silly to think that SES has no bearing on educational and professional attainment. The simple fact is that medical school is mostly filled up with children from upper-middle class families.
