From my understanding, OHSU does not over-accept. A few weeks ago, they had accepted about ~80 people.

One-withdrawal -> one offer from the WL (perhaps in batches).

If that is true, then that would mean great wait list movement??

I got waitlisted very high on the list though in the 90s.

Btw, since this year they are on computer system, i can expect the lists to be quite different than last year. It seems after May 26th, as indicated in that email, that we would know our actual number.
 
Does anyone have a match list from 2010?
 
Has anyone that was on the hold list been accepted or has it just been waitlist/rejected?

Couldn't find the list but OHSU's website breaks it down into percentages:

"Medical school graduates at OHSU continued to buck national trends by selecting primary care residencies, such as family medicine and pediatrics, above and beyond their national counterparts. The need for primary care physicians continues to grow as community providers around the country are aging, with few new providers replacing them. Forty-five percent of OHSU’s medical school seniors will enter a residency that provides primary care. In particular, family medicine residencies were a destination for 12.7 percent of OHSU match applicants, compared to 7.6 percent of match applicants nationally."

Call me a dork, but I looked up the waitlist progress for the past 4 years (al least up to waitlist number 38 cause that's where I am) and here it is:

Do we really have to wait until the beginning of June to hear about WL movement? I have an alternate # below 10 and am trying to plan my summer. Should I just assume I am getting in?

How many waitlisters are preparing an exit interview with OHSU admissions? How low of a number do you guys think should do an exit interview?

Best of luck on round three. I know a physician who applied to OHSU 7 times and got in on her 7th try!

Unlike a lot of other schools, reapplicants are often looked upon very favorably by OHSU because it shows commitment to the program. Also, as OHSU likes older, mature students, re-applicants presumably have had time to grow and mature. About 30% of the class are reapplicants, anyone know the number for other schools?

I've been rejected as well. Super sucky.
 
Interviewed 4/7 and waitlisted in the 60s. It doesn't look good for me. Does anybody know if the waitlist numbers from previous years the actual number accepted off the waitlist or is it the initial waitlist number that they went up to? Thanks
 
Anyone else been given the "a decision has been sent to you via US mail" status and still not received the dang letter??
My status was updated to this last Thursday. Interviewed March 30, second time applicant, gearing up for the third go around. 🙁
 
I haven't gotten mine either... and I live in Oregon so It shouldn't take more than a day to get to me.

And to answer the question about exit interviews... I will be asking for one. I wanna find out the reason why...

does our number change as they add people or no? just curious.
 
Your number will not change. Talked to the admissions office today. It looks like we will not hear anything regarding alternate list movement until June. The secretary told me that there had been no movement so far, which I found surprising.

They gave until May 25th to respond, so if WL #1 or 2 or 3 didnt turn theirs in yet, they probably couldn't do anything
 
Got my letter. Didn't someone say that they include a brief reason to their decision in the letter? Mine was just a generic rejection letter.

I hope your right. Otherwise it looks like it will be a low number this year...which isn't good news for me
 
Any thoughts from current students about being carless during med school?

For pre-clinical classes it seems easy enough, and with the exception of the rural rotation, you can do all rotations on the hill (or at least in inner Portland), right?

I think that the first two years will be easy enough to do without a car, but all the students and admissions folks I have talked to said that a car is pretty necessary for the 3rd and 4th years.

Although I think you have some say on where you do your rotations, I think that you really can end up anywhere in the Portland metro (or maybe even surrounding counties, i.e. Beaverton, etc.) - and sometimes don't even find out until the week before where your next rotation will be.

You could probably work it out with public transportation, but may end up spending a lot of time commuting. Maybe get rid of the car for now and buy a clunker down the road, if needed?

I've been one of the car-less med students for the last 2 years and I've found it fairly manageable. During the pre-clinical years your only real off-hill requirement is your 1 day/week preceptorship (some students have a preceptor on the hill, others do not) and if you have the bad luck of being assigned to something out in Scapoose, you can always attempt a switch with another student. As for out of school life, between biking and public transit, you should be just fine. As an added bonus, OHSU actually offers very cheap annual transit passes to students and faculty ($330/year) and has a program in place to pay those who bike to school/work.

The clerkship years, however, could prove difficult. You will be out of town for your rural rotation, and some students also complete a rural surgical rotation. Your other rotations may be on the hill...or not. Keep in mind that it could take you an hour to travel 5 miles on public transit so you may run into trouble even if your clerkship is technically within Portland city limits. And, even if you are up on the hill for a given rotation there is no guarantee that you won't have to round on patients at 5am (and the buses/tram/MAX/ETC do not start running that early).

My advice would be to try being car-free for a year or so, but to make sure that you set some cash aside to buy a car if/when you need to.

Congrats!!! I be obsessing like crazy looking at the the number of people on the facebook group everyday to see what my chances are like. Did you join it already, please tell me your number 75.

I logged in on the admissions portal and it says they are on 3. It should be right under where they put your waitlist number.

The current waitlist number is on your status page - down by your specific number.
 
Here's the waitlist graph some of you guys were asking for. I'll add 2010's progress every now and then. I think it's hard to compare so far because we don't have the numbers for the previous years in May.

Mine still says "Hold". Odd. I will have to call them tomorrow - I sent in the "yes I want to remain on the waitlist" letter last week.

Well, it's a bit redundant now, but I (#2) got my official acceptance email today! They didn't ask me to respond to the email (that's only if you're not still interested in a spot). They said I should receive my packet within a month. That seems like a long time.

Good luck to everyone else waiting. I've faced the long, agonizing wait before and I know how bad it sucks. Now I have to break the news to the new job that I'm not going to be hanging around after all.

I "requested to join", but it's taking time to "approve" me - seems like a pretty exclusive club 😎

The e-mail is pretty non-detailed and just says "you're in, you'll get your packet in a month, call us if you want to decline". I guess I'll just hang out until the packet arrives. I feel like this year will be a high waitlist # 👍! Crossing my fingers for everyone, as a second-time applicant I know how stressful this waiting can be!
 
So for anyone that still reads this who has had multiple rounds with OHSU or anyone else I guess:

What is the general opinion on the value of having an exit interview in person vs. over the phone? I could barely afford the price to go to the interview, let alone an exit interview (I got rejected earlier this month). I could see that it might show commitment and dedication to OHSU, but is this just over thinking it? Are there significant or rather any benefits at all to having this interview in person?

Oh and yes I will be re-applying to OHSU for this upcoming cycle.

In short, the answer is no. I actually lived in Portland last year when I got rejected and said I could come by but that there really wouldn't be any point. This may have just been because mine was very very short-all they said was I needed to not stress research so much and I needed more clinical experience. I also got accepted this year outright after the interview so I'm pretty sure if you do what the tell you, it really improves your chances. However, if yours is more complicated I could see going up there, but I think it's not that big of a deal, especially if you don't live close and it's a stretch money wise.

Don't get too excited about it. Most of the info in the packet is pretty standard/unexciting. Nothing about schedules or start dates or the like.
 
If I could rearrange the alphabet I would put O...H...S...U and I together...sorry I am sick in bed with nothing better to do... and yes that was an aspiring doctor that just said that

I don't think it matters whether you meet in person or over the phone. Just make sure you get as much specific advice on improving your chances as you can for next year. I don't think the interviewers know whether you did an exit interview or not, but it is something you should talk about in the interview if you get one for this upcoming cycle.
