called today about the OOS waitlist. they are only overaccepted by 5 students now before taking off the waitlist.

Wow. The number of OOS withdrawls is staggering. Weren't they over by 48 students when the interviews ended?

When I talked to admissions, they told me that even though they over accept by 60 OOS each year, it has been the "norm" for them to still get 50-70 people in to the OOS wait list. However, last year they only took TWO off of the OOS wait list. So I'm just praying that this year won't be unusual like last year (I'm on the waitlist... Iowa is basically my only hope... eeeek!)

Hopefully this week we will have a better idea...??

I'm pulling for you. I'm in basically the same boat. Hopefully this year isn't a below average year for in-state or oos movement.

I called around 3 or so and had moved up six spots... I kind of expected a little more, but maybe it's just still early?

I don't know... Did you ask if they had gotten into the waitlist yet? Someone posted a few days ago that there were only 5 over accepted left. I think tomorrow late afternoon-ish I'm going to call again. I'll post what I find out.

I called today and they said that they accepted the first OOS waitlister yesterday. She also said now through the end of May/beginning of June is when they expect to get pretty deep into the OOS list. Good new I guess, but more waiting than I anticipated!! I suppose it's not called a "wait" list for nothing!

I was wondering the same thing. Last week when they sent out the update it looked like they had taken 3 people off the OOS waitlist. At that point I was still 27 away from getting in. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed though. If anyone calls them post what they tell you!!

Did anyone else receive an email saying that carver was going to run a background check on alternate list students?

I didn't get that email. I already filled one out for another school though so maybe I'm in the system.

Just curious about what living arrangements you guys (those matriculating @ Iowa) are making? It's kinda an unofficial poll, just state whether u're IS/OOS and choose whichever living arrangement applies to you..

Also if you're fro the area, what advice would you have for us "out-of-towners?" For starters, I'm thinking about a place above sea-level given the recent floods...

Anyway here it goes...

1. Will you rent an apartment or renting a room?

2. Will you stay on campus?

3. Will you stay at a frat/soro house (AKK etc)?

4. Will you commute from home (lucky ones..)?

5. Will you buy a condo/house/etc..?

6. Other... pls specify...couch surfing..lol ?

So I'll start...

I'm OOS and I'm looking into (1).

FWIW this might be better for the Facebook group.

From what I can tell about IC/Coralville there's not any place that's "Too far" from school.

Also: I love Iowa. 🙂

So... I think it's finally sinking in that Iowa is a lost cause for me. The update sent out a few days ago put me at #25 on the OOS alternate list. This is just frustrating considering if I had applied two years ago I would have been easily in. Looks like I'm starting my 2011 AMCAS!!! 🙁

So close to getting in, Only 2 more to go!

Thanks! Sorry to hear about the waitlist stalling on you.

Dr. Yack,

Did you end up getting accepted? I called today to see where I was at on the waitlist and had moved up 5 spots so I thought maybe that meant good news for you? I am OOS though. I can't remember if you said you were in-state or not.

I'm IS. I'm still stuck at number 2 as far as I know, which is frustrating. Hopefully the OOS list will continue to move for you.

does anyone out there still read this forum (besides DrYack 🙂)??

How long is Iowa giving OOS students accepted off the waitlist to hold their spot in the class?

I thought that after May 15th if you could only hold one acceptance. Don't you have to decide pretty much right away?

Here is the AAMC recommendation:

6. After May 15 of the matriculation year (April 15 for schools whose first day of class is on or before July 30), April 30 for MD-PhD programs, each school or program implement school-specific procedures for accepted applicants who, without adequate explanation, continue to hold one or more places at other schools or programs. These procedures:
  1. May require applicants to:
    1. Respond to acceptance offers in less than two weeks.
    2. Submit a statement of intent, a deposit, or both.
  2. Should recognize the problems of applicants with multiple acceptance offers, applicants who have not yet received an acceptance offer, and applicants who have not yet been informed about financial aid opportunities at schools to which they have been accepted.
  3. Should permit accepted applicants to remain on other schools' or programs' waiting lists and to withdraw if they later receive an acceptance offer from a preferred school or program.

So it sounds like it's normally about two weeks to decide.

Thanks for the info, Bahoffer!

I have not been taken off the wait list at Iowa yet, but I was taken off the list this week at another school. I am trying to figure out what my chances are at Iowa still, as it is my preferred school. The problem is, the school I got accepted at begins orientation the last week of July!! So... what if I started orientation there because it is the only school I have been accepted at, but then find out a week later that I get pulled off the wait list at Iowa?

Someone correct me if I am wrong., but I believe you can hold one acceptance and be waitlisted someplace else, and if accepted from the waitlist, you can give up your first acceptance up until the day before class starts. Once class starts you can no longer change.

That is correct.

Tough decision making, but remember that a bird in hand is worth bazillions in the bush!!! In ur shoes, I'll accept the other school and if accepted by Iowa b4 start of classes that's sweet, if not go to the other school.

Med student >>>> Premed!!! U can come back to Iowa for residency if ur interested @ that point!

Congrats and GL!

Thanks for the advice everyone! I guess right now I'll plan on the other school and hope Iowa doesn't accept me after orientation. That would be a sad kick in the ass! you're right too... residency is more important in some ways than med school, so I can also come back for that!

So seeing as how I've been stuck at #2 on the instate alternate list for about a month now, I've been thinking.... how big of a bribe would it take for me to get you to give up your spot? 😀 Seriously though, being stuck on the alternate list is torture.

I'm sad for you that no one has readily volunteered yet to give up their spot to medical school! You've still got about 6 weeks so hang in there... someone might get into their "dream school" last minute and ditch Iowa!

Haha yes maybe someone will get into their dream school and open up a spot. What I really need to do is figure out who I can bribe into dropping out of med school!

Accepted Monday off the OOS wait list at #20. It's moving better than last year!

Congrats! You started at #20? I started at 42 and am at #10 as of yesterday... I'm hoping maybe I still have a chance here...

Any OOSer's out there that are accepted--- if you don't think you are going to Iowa, hurry up and withdraw! Lol. I need to move 8 more spots on the waitlist before July 26th (when the other school I am accepted at starts orientation)!

Accepted yet Taj?

Dr Tack-- I'm still waiting to be accepted! Hopefully something will happen here soon. How about you? Last I heard you were stuck at #2 on the in-state list!

Hopefully you can sneak in there this year yet, but at least you've got that other acceptance in your pocket. I'm still at number 2, its looking to stay that way, so I've been chipping away at amcas, Bah!

I'm sorry, I know how that goes. I had started my AMCAS again before I got my acceptance at Missouri. Iowa is definitely my first choice but if it means I don't have to go through all that again, I'm going to MU. However, it looks like I might still have a chance at Iowa. As of yesterday I'm #3 on the OOS list. I have to know by Friday that I'm in at Iowa though, as MU starts orientation next Monday the 26th. I don't want to give up my acceptance being #1 or something on Iowa's list, and then take the chance of not getting in there! That would be devastating. About as devastating as starting orientation at MU and then finding out 2 days later that I'm accepted at Iowa.

Meh. If only I were impressive enough to make it in right off the bat!

Man, that is a bummer. At least you'll know where you're attending soon! I'm thinking I'll apply to MU next year. I'll pm you about it.
