Hi everyone, I've never posted before but i swore I would if I got into UMass. (yay!) I wanted to post because I don't have great numbers and I feel like a lot of people on this site do. (And it has made me feel very low in the past lurking through all your incredible MDApps!). I haven't done anything a lot of people on here seem to advocate as the "one true path" to getting into medical school - 4.0, 35T, 9000 hours shadowing a neurosurgeon - but I really really love what I have done in the interim since college, and I worked hard to make sure going into medicine was 100% what I wanted to do for reasons other than "helping people". Also my premed advisor told me my essay was good, but I don't really know if that matters that much.

Anyways, that's my spiel, and good luck to EVERYONE out there - even if you got 2 C's in Orgo, and thought your life was over 🙂

CONGRATS, girl! At first look I thought those WERE your stats and I was like, ugh, Whatevs with these crazy SDNers, but now you give me hope!
Yay for C's in orgo! When did you interview?

I interviewed at the end of September, and the waiting was killing me!

I interviewed at the end of September, and the waiting was killing me!

congrats! I interviewed around the same time... hoping I get some good news next time they get around to acceptances...

Congrats!!! This gives me hope since I was under the impression that if we didn't get accepted the month after our interview, we would have to wait until May. Even if this is true, it's good to see UMass accepting more people.

Agreed

Hi guys

I have an interview this week, and the email said the arrival time is 11:00 a.m. Does this mean I have afternoon interviews?
When does the day usually end for afternoon interviewees?

Hey nankk000, I have an interview at 11:00am as well and it looks like they serve a lunch and then have a tour before any interviews, but I am also curious about the Interview day!

can anyone that recently interviewed shed light on the course of the day... Do you arrive 11:00am, eat lunch, tour, then interviews or different order?

if anyone can post this info, thank you!

Yes. You have an afternoon interview. When you arrive, you'll sit through the presentations, have lunch, and go on the tour before your interview. I'm not sure when you'll be done, but I'm guessing around 5. Good luck!

Ah, sorry, I have no info on applicants. Wish I could ease the agony for you!!

I have to say it is exciting on this end, too. The campus gets a buzz in mid-March when the 4th years find out where they matched and the buzz keeps going through graduation in May, then all focus turns to getting things ready for incoming 1st years.

Good luck to all! I hope the wait is over soon and you all get in where you want to go.

I don't remember if they said this during the interview and I couldn't find it on the website but does anyone know what their average step 1 score is?

first congrats!
alos i don't think people on this site ever said that stats are the "one true path to medicine" in fact it has been stated over and over again that stats are not everything. And there's nothing WRONG with wanting to help people while doing something that you love. I really hate how this whole application things has turned such a positive and sincere concept into negative one just because it's too generic

its friday again, wonder is snailmass will post any acceptances.

In the past it seems like they only posted acceptances once a month. Hope they make an exception... but chances are we won't hear anything until next month.

just accepted via the status page. no email yet. interviewed early november

AHHHHH soooo lucky. Umass, please update my status too!
07, can you let us know the time lag between the email and the update. Also, are you very overqualified for UMASS?

WOW, CONGRATS! Did you just go to app status and it said 'accepted'? Mine just says complete... I hope you're thrilled cause I would be THRILLED

received an email this morning. interviewed in mid september with avg stats. was a longgg wait but super pumped. good luck to the rest of you all still waiting!!

Congrats on acceptance!

Did you guys send in a letter of interest?

Does anyone know where to send a letter of interest?

i sent a loi i think around november. I snail mailed mine to the admissions office and addressed it to the dean.

Is anyone else really bummed about not hearing from UMASS, its not eactly my saftey school, but it was school I thought i had best chance at. and because of its location and cost, along with fact its a good school, it's my top top choice. But its been so long since I heard anything, and its really dampening my hopes.

yup same

That's really interesting, havn't heard about this before. This plan really doesn't make much sense to me though, the program seems to be oddly conflicting, it wants to recruit more URM, but mainly to boost the presitge of its undergraduate programs by attracting top students away from private schools? If UMASS wants to recruit more URM, it could easily do so through regular adm, so it seems the main goal is to attract students who otherwise would not consider UMASS ungrad, because they can get into hpys, and then the corresponding medical schools.

1. 12 spots is hardly gonna make a dent in terms of recruit top students.
2. URM tends to boost diversity, not stats (main factor that goes in determining prestige)

bottom line: Makes much more sense to offer the 12 seats to the best students inregardless of any other factors like race if goal is to attract top students, and just up adm of URM in regular adm if goal is to increase diversity.

I read this article in the globe and I don't know if this is the best idea. If attracting talented minority students to Umass is a a big concern, perhaps the school could create a merit-based scholarship fund for under-represented groups. Since Umass already offers the learning contract, this would offer a strong financial incentive for talented under-represented students to attend Umass.

Although there is no doubt in my mind that some high school students have the drive and intellect to succeed in medical school, I think accepting students directly into medical school from HS is a bit risky. I know Brown, Uconn, RPI, etc. have these combined programs but IMO college performance is a better indicator for success in med school than HS performance. Additionally, I don't know whether "withholding" spots for this program is fair unless Umass continues to expand its class size. As it stands, it is quite difficult to gain admission to Umass because they will not over-accept students.

I hope Umass requires a minimum GPA and MCAT score upon completion of undergrad for students in this program. This ensures that students who are admitted through this program are committed to succeeding in medicine.

I would have thought, since UMass is funded by Mass. taxpayers, that something like this would have had to have gone through a public referendum. It's odd how they kept this away from the media until it was about to be carried through.

When's the last time UMass policy went to a public referendum? Pretty sure the school is not directly responsive to voters (as that would be a surefire way to get nothing done) unless it's a matter of changing a law. We have no say over budgetary issues except by voting for our representatives. Maybe you're thinking of local (ie town or city) governments, which sometimes have to vote on budget overrides, etc.

I interviewed 10/14 and still have not heard back yet.... bad?

they sent out acceptances pretty recently, right? ie don't hold your breath today?

I confess, I stalked last year's thread. LOL I really hope we don't end up as neurotic in may. Anyways, i interviewed pretty early too and looked like most people that had so much lag between interview and decision were eventually waitlisted in April, and many were accepted after may 20th.

Impressive work! those are some long wait times.. I'm only at the 1.5 month mark post interview. I find this post somehow discouraging 🙁 I LOVE Umass but I feel like it is so unlikely that they will love me back.

The only credit I can take is copying and pasting it from last year's thread.

Don't get discouraged. It's just a long wait that will mean nothing when we get in. 😀

Hey guys,

Glad to see last year's thread is still useful 🙂

I was one of the people impatiently waiting for a decision last year, so I wanted to check in on this thread and see how it was going. I'm at UMass now, so if anybody has any questions, please feel free to PM me. I'd be happy to talk to any of you about the school, the joy that is the insanely slow application process or any questions you might have about life in "Wuhstah."

Haha srcublover, I though I was reading the wrong thread when I saw your name. I was REALLY bored, and went through all of last year's thread, you guys are a hilarious bunch

There I am in last years list 🙁. I interviewed again like two weeks ago and I'm hoping to hear soon!

Just got a call from UMASS and apparently I have an interview next Tuesday and I didn't know about it till today

Turns out they sent an email back in 12/17 and I never got it 😕

On the bright side, anybody interviewing that day? it's in the AM, horray interview

Ya, same thing happened to me in September. Congrats!

Yep, my interview invite for back in September went straight to my spam. By chance I caught it.

So is anyone on this thread planning on attending? I'm almost sure at this point that I will be matriculating @ Umass. 🙂

really can't decide... trying to keep my options open until financial aid stuff comes out :xf:

No question for me. I would attend.

I've been debating about whether or not to join SDN and post now for about three weeks. Ever since starting the application process, I've been watching this UMass thread. I submitted my primary application during the first week of July and my UMass secondary was in by the end of August. I was invited to interview at UMass on 10/21/09 and then my obsession for watching people post here grew exponentially!! After three months of waiting, checking email, watching SDN, and logging into the UMass site every day (hey, I guess I'm a little OCD), I found out on 1/22/10 that I was accepted!

I wasn't sure about posting because I got a heart pang every single time I read a post like this while I was waiting to hear, but in the end, I still liked knowing that people where getting in, one by one. I know it takes forever to hear--I know--I held my breath every single time I logged into the UMass site and waited for the page to refresh.

Anyway, bottom line: It might be a long wait, but it is worth it and you will hear sooner or later. The lag between interview & acceptance for me was 3 months. I did find out on Friday of the third week of January, so it seems that maybe this lends some credence to the "3rd Friday" rumor about decisions.

Hope that helps.

Also, to caveat87 -- I'll be there, for sure. Class of 2014!
