1. What exactly is the pinning ceremony?

2. Will both campuses' ceremonies take place in Miami or in their respective cities?

Would someone mind private messaging me the link to Miami's Secondary/status page? It looks like I did not save the original email they sent me and was hoping to review what I wrote before my interview! Assuming the secondary responses are still on the website... if not, never mind!

I'm interviewing this week so I would appreciate it...

Thanks...

It will not let you access the secondary. I had foolishly not printed it out after I was done, and when it came time to prepare for the interview, I couldn't find it. I had also forgotten what I wrote about "why miami" so I had to research that again.

Aw boo... I think I found what I wrote, but am not 100% sure it is the same as what I submitted. I guess I will just go with it. I'm tired of this whole interview process...

Have they sent any interview invites lately?

Have they sent any interview invites lately?

Wow, I was just thinking the same thing! I got my invite this morning in the elevator on my way up to my FIU interview. I read it and the doors opened to the interview greeter! I literally had no time to react! LOL. 😍

Anyone else get lucky today?? I was not able to call to schedule a date though.

The school has a fairly large endowment and is quite generous when it comes to financial aid. Obviously that doesn't mean everyone will get money, but I got some last year and definitely didn't expect any (not going to share my stats but I was above the average). I was notified in March right when I got back from spring break, so I wouldn't stress too much about it right now.

As for second look, there is no official one as most of you know but Miami isn't a bad place to take a vacation if you want to check the school out again 😉.

I got an invite for both campuses a few days ago! I've booked February 8th for the main campus and February 9th for the regional campus in Boca Raton.

I was complete 11/16.

I was complete 11/16 as well. I'm really hoping something comes soon...

Wow, congrats to both of you! This gives me a little hope as I continue to wait!

Oh, I guess I forgot to put my complete date: also 11/16

My interview dates are: Thursday 2/4 (Boca) and Friday 2/5 (Miami)

Anyone else interviewing on that day? BTW I live in Boca, so if anyone is flying in or not familiar with the area feel free to ask me any questions Boca/FAU related.

GL everyone!

Hey yall,

Quick question for those who have interviewed. Did they say anything about sending updated transcripts from last semester?? I interviewed last week, but forgot to ask that question...

Just wondering if any of you have sent your transcripts or heard otherwise...

Thanks!

was there a decision meeting today?

I interviewed 11/23 and 11/24 in boca....

12/9 got the WL email for boca
still have not heard anything from main campus...i keep calling and they say hopefully my file will get reviewed.....really getting frustrated with UM

There's a 9 out of 10 chance that u will be WL'd at main campus also. The commitees apparently collaborate. Boca can't make any decisions w/o main campus approval.

Hey does anyone know the grading system at UM? Is it P/F or something else? I've been trying to figure this out for a very long time but I can't find a straight answer anywhere.

That sucks because I thought my miami interview went much better than the boca one....

Grading system is not really P/F. You get a numerical grade, and your module grades are what gets sent out to residency directors (i.e. our Human Structures module was made up of anatomy, cell biology, and histology, and your combined grade between the three classes would make up your module grade which is sent out). Not sure what kind of statistics, if any, are sent out with your grades when you apply to residency, but regardless unless you make AOA your pre-clinical grades are essentially meaningless (unless you fail a subject).

That being said, this does not inspire gunnerism/backstabbing behavior. Anyone who is an asshat is pretty much called out on it in the first 8 weeks of school during anatomy and the class as a whole is incredibly relaxed (as far as med students go) and helpful.

got the call a little after 5

so apparently this place interviews till april? are invites still going out?

Sounds awesome. Thank you!

when do classes usually go 'til? they are all posted online right?

All classes are posted online (morning classes are usually up at about 1pm)

class time varies...at most 5 hours of class a day. Usually it's 5 hours monday wednesday friday, and then 3 hours tuesday thursday. Afternoons Tuesday or Thursday are spent either going to preceptor or in academic societies doing physical exam training or other exercises. I say "OR" because if your society meets one of those days it won't meet on the other.

Anyone know if there will be an adcom meeting this Wednesday (2/3)?

Hey All,

Just got an interview invite yesterday. When I called to confirm my attendance to one of interview dates for the Boca Campus they said they were on hold. I was told they would send an e-mail when students could again sign-up for a date. Has anyone else experienced this?

Hey All!

I have my Boca interview tomorrow and my Miami interview Friday! Any last minute tips/advice?? Cannot wait!:xf:

does this place reject silently?

complete mid october, haven't heard back....

but then again they interview until april, so who knows...

I honestly have no clue. I received the email yesterday so maybe I had missed the call from them last week?? I was pretty confused too.

Anyone else accepted at both campuses? If so, have you made a decision and where are you going and why?

I interviewed at both campuses on the 14th and 15th (Boca and Miami, respectively), and I got a call from my interviewer at Boca on the morning of the 28th telling me I was accepted. Oddly enough, I too received an email and a call this past Friday (a week later) from the Miami campus telling me I was accepted there as well. It hasn't really sunk in yet though - I'll let you all know when it does. But am I excited? Hell yes.

So, Prince, which way are you leaning right now and why?
Honestly, I'm heavily leaning towards Boca. Here's my take.
Miami is great, but I don't really like big downtown areas. Actually, I hate them. I hate fighting for parking, I hate traffic jams, I hate the higher crime rates, I hate [fill in the blank with everything that's characteristic of big downtown areas]. If the med school was located where FIU is or some place like that the choice between Boca and Miami would be much harder. Now, Miami has more Harveys and access to a greater hospital where we'd be likely to see more things. That's a factor that is hard to discount. Moreover, Miami offers dual degrees, specifically MD/MBA and MD/MPH whereas Boca does not. These are real points for Miami and that's why I'm still hesitating right now.
But I really like smaller cities. I love easy parking, I love low crime, I love easy driving, and did I mention that Boca is absolutely gorgeous in every sense of the term? Plus Boca probably has the best faculty/student ratio in the known universe. All of the teachers and administrators are bound to know you personally, and they'll be able to write great letters of recommendation.
Lastly, my background is very practical, and I'm sure I would do well in PBL. Apparently, it hasn't been shown to lead to lower scores on the boards, so I'm really not sure that there's any significant negative in going to Boca Raton.
Any thoughts on the matter, anyone?

The choice between which campus you choose to attend is wholly based on personal preference. The way you described yourself and your hate for bigger cities, I would say Boca sounds right for you. As for me, the biggest draw for Boca is the "family" feeling of the community and the availability of the faculty. I'm also largely fond of the emphasis on PBL, yet I am not sure whether these are reasons enough for me to pass up on everything that Miami has to offer. On the contrary, I love big cities, I love the resources Miami has to offer and I also used to work at that campus and have some old mentors and colleagues that I'm close with at that campus. So those are all big pluses for the Miami campus as far as I'm concerned.

Whatever the case, though, there is no doubt in my mind that whatever campus you choose, you will not regret your decision. Students seem to love both campuses and you'll have one hell of a ride no matter where you go. (I'm putting up my "U" right now, you just can't see it).

the only thing that i would like to add is that im pretty sure boca does NOT rotate through jackson, which is a big plus for anyone wanting to go into trauma. just a thought. i also got into both but am leaning toward miami because of the big city.

Yeah, I think you're right, Prince. In the end, it's all a matter of personal preference. These things are hard to explain in words, but I was getting a different type of vibe at Boca that felt much more like home than pretty much anywhere else I've had the chance to interview. The only thing I didn't fall in love with were the hospitals. If the hospitals there could be as cool as, say, the Iowa City hospital, it'd be heaven. But I guess it's hard to get everything you want.
The last thing I'll add is that I think you CAN get rotations Jackson in year 4 if you so choose.
Anyone else with thoughts on the 2 campuses?

I also got into both campuses back in November and already officially chose the Miami campus over Boca. I live close to the Miami campus so I would not have to pay for any room & board. Also, my girlfriend, family, and friends are all in Miami so it would make things easier for me socially. Both campuses have their pluses and minuses...Boca has more of a close/collegial atmosphere and all the perks of a small city. Miami has all the advantages (diverse patient population and experiences, level 1 trauma center) and disadvantages (traffic, crime) of a big city. I could really live anywhere so my decision is more due to convenience.

The choice you make not only depends on personal preference but also what you want out of medicine. Many students I've spoken with at Boca say that the patient population can be somewhat less diverse (white, elderly patients over 70), but you could do a clerkship at Jackson in your 4th year. So Boca would provide a lot of experience in primary care, geriatrics, and other related specialties. But if you want to go into underserved medicine, public health, emergency medicine, etc., Miami would probably be more suitable. I think the Miami campus also has much more research opportunities if that's what you're looking for. However, you would probably be fine selecting either campus because at Boca, you could go to Miami to do a dual degree and come back and you could go to Jackson for a short time in your 4th year.

All the reasons you mentioned (that I highlighted) are things that are making me consider Boca over another school that I'm accepted to, and if I got off the Wl at Miami then over Miami too. I'm frankly not that interested in trauma ( and especially not being the patient!). Even if I were to be interested later on I could see it at Jackson during fourth year. One of the things that I actually LOVED about Boca was that 3rd and 4th year its two students plus an attending so its very hands on and thats really the way I learn. Boca is also my type of city for reasons that you mentioned above. I love that its safe, pretty, and not overcrowded and that its NEAR big cities.

Miami is very cool. However, downtown Miami is scary and I don't want to be afraid for my life everytime I'm leaving school. I also HATE traffic.

so yeah, I agree with many of your reasons lol and I will probably withdraw off the WL in Miami eventually.

Well Hifey, I certainly hope I will see you there. If I may ask what's the other school you were accepted at and what will you base your decision on?
I have two other acceptances, other than the Miami ones, and Boca has definitely won my heart, but I'm waiting to see fin-aid offers before I decide. Even though I would love to leave Michigan and move to Boca right now if I could, it will all come down to how much debt I'll have in the end.

Just in case anyone else is wondering this, I asked the question, a few days ago, of whether the choice of a campus would impact fin-aid offers and i got this reply:

Your choice of campus will not impact your financial aid. It will be identical at either campus.
During the next few weeks you will be hearing more from the UMMSM about campus selection.

Sincerely,

Richard S. Weisman, Pharm.D
Associate Dean
University of Miami Miller School of Medicine

So, choose in peace, I guess.

If I end up in Boca then I hope i'll see you there too 🙂 I was accepted to another school in Ohio that i'm OOS for. Honestly, I know I could save about 60 grand overall going to the school in ohio ( instate tuition after first year), but Boca was overall more attractive to me. It felt like a better "fit" I guess which is vastly important to me, and my family have all encouraged me to go to Boca over Ohio (my mom is worried about the weather -- I'm from california so snow storms are a foreign concept and she's says that she wouldnt be able to think about me living through an eastern winter lol). And also the reasons I mentioned above, plus, it would be more likely that I could match back into California come residency time. I won't lie...the warm florida weather is a balm to my california girl soul

There are really only three other schools that I would go to over Boca at this point. One of which I have an post interview waitlist and the other two haven't interviewed me (yet most likely never). So I feel it safe to say that there is a great chance I'll be in Boca this time next year 🙂 Fin aid is something else to consider but unless I get accepted to one of the two that haven't interviewed me , the cost is pretty much the same (with the exception of saving 60 grand in Ohio).

Thought this might be of interest to those of you considering the Boca campus "FAU cancels UM medical affiliation, pursues independent program" http://southflorida.bizjournals.com/southflorida/stories/2010/01/18/daily24.html.

This happened fairly recently and its not known exactly how things will play out for the current UM@FAU med students (or for the matriculating class of 2014). We may end up down at Jackson for 4th year/possibly 3rd year-final decisions are still pending.
