So, Prince, which way are you leaning right now and why?
Honestly, I'm heavily leaning towards Boca. Here's my take.
Miami is great, but I don't really like big downtown areas. Actually, I hate them. I hate fighting for parking, I hate traffic jams, I hate the higher crime rates, I hate [fill in the blank with everything that's characteristic of big downtown areas]. If the med school was located where FIU is or some place like that the choice between Boca and Miami would be much harder. Now, Miami has more Harveys and access to a greater hospital where we'd be likely to see more things. That's a factor that is hard to discount. Moreover, Miami offers dual degrees, specifically MD/MBA and MD/MPH whereas Boca does not. These are real points for Miami and that's why I'm still hesitating right now.
But I really like smaller cities. I love easy parking, I love low crime, I love easy driving, and did I mention that Boca is absolutely gorgeous in every sense of the term? Plus Boca probably has the best faculty/student ratio in the known universe. All of the teachers and administrators are bound to know you personally, and they'll be able to write great letters of recommendation.
Lastly, my background is very practical, and I'm sure I would do well in PBL. Apparently, it hasn't been shown to lead to lower scores on the boards, so I'm really not sure that there's any significant negative in going to Boca Raton.
Any thoughts on the matter, anyone?

While UM isn't exactly located in the best of neighborhoods I have never felt unsafe on the medical campus (nor has anyone I know), and there are always police etc. that can walk you to your car late at night if you do (there's a number to call, they're very responsive). Regardless, most people live in much nicer areas than where the campus is and crime isn't really a big deal.

As for parking/traffic, most people live 10-15 minutes from school (maybe 20 minutes with rush hour traffic) and there is ample parking on campus and most places around the city.

Now sure, parking/traffic/crime are all much better in Boca, but you've largely overstated the significance of all three so try not to let them play too much in your decision to choose one school over another because 99% of the time they're going to be nonissues. It sounds like Boca seems a pretty good fit for you, I just wanted to give my 2 cents about those things after living and going to school in Miami. Best of luck =)

Thought this might be of interest to those of you considering the Boca campus "FAU cancels UM medical affiliation, pursues independent program" http://southflorida.bizjournals.com/southflorida/stories/2010/01/18/daily24.html.

This happened fairly recently and its not known exactly how things will play out for the current UM@FAU med students (or for the matriculating class of 2014). We may end up down at Jackson for 4th year/possibly 3rd year-final decisions are still pending.

Wow, I just read the article and searched google news for others to read and all of a sudden I'm not so sure anymore. I'm really not too excited about finding myself in the middle of academian politics. One of the appealing things about Boca is that it had the UM name, established and nationally recognized. I'm not sure what exactly the implications will be for the class of 2014. From what I've read so far, I think this class will be unaffected, but what does it mean to be applying for residency when one is from a program no longer exists? I'm not sure, but it'll now be much harder for me to choose Boca when I have other options available.
Any thoughts on this?

Well, of course if you're not comfortable with it then don't choose it. It's not bothering me too much because your diploma is still gonna say UM. You're applying for residency from UM, not UM-BOCA. Yeah, we are going to be the last class but we're not going to be the FIRST (I'd be a lot more worried about the latter than the former). Precedent has already been set for us so its not like people will be questioning our ability to perform. We'll see how it plays out for the next few months but its not really something that would be a dealbreaker for me.

Hey folks, just wondering your thoughts on the PBL curriculum at Boca. I have a few friends in medical school now, 1st and 2nd years... When I talk to them or ask them about PBL, they don't understand what I am talking about or how it is possible to learn that way for the entire first two years.

From my M2 friend... he was like "There is no time to research things or read books in Medical School. I study, study, study, don't go to class, and watch the lectures online over and over, and go over the slides from class"

So my question is... does Boca give you notes to go study in the PBL sessions or do they make you go research this stuff on your own? I am confused by the whole PBL thing, and given that medical school is going to be the hardest schooling I have ever experienced, I want to make sure I understand the way PBL goes and how it will help me study, study, study like a mad man. I'm not sure if any current Boca students surf this forum, but I would really love to hear some experience on this.

Gracias...

Wow this certainly comes as a huge surprise! The article states: "The 128 students in that program can continue learning on FAU’s Boca Raton campus until they complete their degrees." So I wonder if those students already at FAU and the incoming class of 2014 would earn a degree from UM or FAU, and if FAU does become completely independent very soon, I don't know if any students at FAU would be able to go to Jackson at all.

I'm fairly certain the PBL is primarily used for the purpose of integrating the material you learn in the sciences into a medical context. You still attend lectures (apparently at Boca they are more adamant about attendance than at Miami - as spoken from the student host I stayed with at Boca) and you have a significant amount of PBL to get a feel for the clinical context of that which you are learning. It's basically doing case studies etc to reinforce that which you've learned, and I think it ultimately works great and serves to produce well-trained clinicians (I'm pretty sure I used that line before in a secondary application essay). Whatever the case, I'm fond of the PBL and group based learning. You have a faculty mentor for your sessions, and as far as I can see the more face time with experienced faculty the better.

I also took medical biochemistry as a part of my masters program and we would regularly have physicians as guest lecturers afford us insight into the clinical relevance of the material we were covering, and frankly those lectures were the most interesting to me. The way I see it, what good is the science if you aren't able to relate it to medicine?

Current students as well as the class of 2014 will graduate with degrees from UM. After that, its all FAU.

I wonder why they didn't mention anything about this when we interviewed. Even if it doesn't affect the class of 2014 and before, they should have at least discussed this.

this is a really recent thing. at my interview last week they did address it, so unless you had an interview recently they wouldn't have said anything bc they didn't know it was going to happen.

What do you think... Are interview invites done here?

ThePrince answered your question pretty well but I just want to add that the PBL curriculum is not at all unique to UM-Boca. USC, Harvard, Cornell ( i think) and a few other schools already have an all PBL curriculum. Honestly, my only worry at first is that not all the groups will learn the same stuff but then I found out that there are lectures at the end of each case study directed to the whole class that will let you know what you were supposed to get out of it. I really like that its all integrated to and that we get to apply science to medicine. Thats the best part although I don't think I'll love mandatory attendance lol.

my interview was in december so I'm not surprised I didn't hear anything about it. I do think though that now that they've got all that settled they should send out some kind of letter informing us of the change and what to expect.

I agree that now UM should send out something. I interviewed in November, but even though they signed on this in January, they still had to have known about this for quite some time. Deciding to make your own med school isn't something you rush into. I'm guessing they didn't address it until very recently because it wasn't a sure thing until now.

From what I understand there really isn't going to be much difference in the day to day runnings at FAU. They've been fairly independent for a while now (completely different curriculum, they got their own hospital for rotations 3rd and 4th year, etc.). If you liked the school I don't think there's really any reason to have doubts about it.

for financial aid, there's no difference between the two campuses, right? (in terms of submitting FAFSA and stuff)

I went to undergrad at FAU (c/o 2009) and am a current employee. Consequently, I am very familiar with the UM-Boca program.

From what I understand (could be wrong), the contract was up and FAU, not UM, decided to venture out on their own (which makes me happy as its good news for my Alma Mater, I'm biased). There may have been a chance that UM had an idea that FAU might want to do this, but definitely not with enough certainty to inform applicants. No reason to raise confusion unless completely necessary.

Well, the worry isn't in how independent the campus is. Things to consider:

class of 2014 will be the last class at UM@FAU. FAU is going to start their own medical school with the first entering class in 2011. The article talked about having the buildings, faculty etc. already there. I'm guessing that some of UM-Boca faculty are actually FAU faculty. How would that affect research, preceptorship, and other opportunities? How would that affect possible 3rd and 4th years for us ( are we moving down to Jackson or are we continuing what the school has been doing?) ? How would, for that matter, affect how we use the building itself? It's a lot of questions and I think its only fair to expect UM to address these concerns.

I got a letter in the mail today from Dr. Hernandez offering me a merit scholarship, which brings the cost down to pretty much exactly the same as a state school. There goes my only complaint about UMMSM. <3

Did anyone else hear some good news? My letter was postmarked for the 2nd, so I'm assuming I'm not the only one.

You seem to agree yourself that there are a lot of unanswered questions. I my last communication with the Boca school, I was told that I'd be hearing from them about campus selection soon, so I think that some of these questions will be addressed soon. I think the decision to sever the affiliation is only a week or so old, so I'm willing to give them time to assuage my concerns, but let's just say that at this point, I'm not as excited as I would otherwise have been and my enthusiasm has been much tempered. It's not a deal-breaker, but I'm vacillating much more than before.

Also, someone asked whether the cost would be the same. For now, the difference in cost between the two campuses is inconsequentially small, and the fin-aid is the same. Now, the good news for people applying to FAU next year is that tuition -in state at least- will be lower. It will go from 30k to 21k. I'm not sure how that will work for OOS students.

Yeah, there are a lot of questions I want to hear answers to. But again, not a deal breaker.

Hi all,

I received an email from Dr. Weisman about a week ago. He assured me that if the Boca campus is determined to be unstable, the University of Miami at FAU students will be relocated to the Miami campus.

I really really really hope that we get to attend Boca... I love the curriculum and setting. Miami would definitely be an experience, but I'd be happier in the smaller community setting... and Boca just felt right. :xf:

Voilà! My thoughts exactly.

Some new information decided upon today...there will not be an incoming class (class of 2014) this fall at the Boca campus. Everyone accepted to the Boca campus will be able to matriculate at the main campus in Miami.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news (though maybe its good news for some).

^^WOW. That is really sorry to hear as this state is in need of physicians and I don't think the main campus will have ~180 students for 2014. 🙁

Just to play devil's advocate, what would you say if a residency director asked which campus you attended? They know there are two campuses for UM and it wouldn't take much effort on their part to ask you that simple question during a residency interview. Just because your diploma says UM, doesn't mean no one will know otherwise.

FWIW, I interviewed at FAU in Fall 2008 and thought it was a nice place. Students loved it, faculty seemed really happy, etc. I didn't go there because I'm not a fan of small class sizes (I went to UF). I prefer to blend in the background and the dean specifically said that his program wouldn't be the best fit for a student like that (I didn't ask, he just stated it and it happened to answer a lot). The area is really nice as well. I grew up in Lake Worth not too far away and have a lot of family friends in Boca as well as Coral Springs.

Good luck.

I would say that I attended UM-Boca. It's not something to ashamed of, its simply a different learning style. I have no problem with anyone knowing. In fact, when people ask me where I'm thinking of going, I say UM Boca. And because I'm on the west coast I usually have to explain it to people too. When I commented that your diploma comes from UM, I meant that FAU's name won't be on it because we're not FAU students if that makes any sense.

Anyways, according to earlier posts I guess this wouldn't be an issue if the class of 2014 ends up in Miami...

Me too sort of. I think Miami would be an experience too but I was more comfortable with the idea of living in Boca.

Do you have a source for this? Because as someone who might matriculate to the Miami campus by choice, it kind of sucks knowing that our class is going to be almost 200 people strong. That's a LOT of students.

I am a current UM@FAU student and the Dean informed us today that the Class of 2013 will be the final UM@FAU class. All students accepted to the UM@FAU class of 2014 will matriculate in Miami.....

maybe they will accept less now and off the waitlist?

...this is certainly sad news. I really loved the FAU campus and atmosphere. The positive thing is that at UM I can get dual degrees, I guess. Oh well, c'est la vie. Where I go in the end will depend on fin-aid.

wow... this is a bummer. i didn't interview at the miami campus and don't even know if i like it or not! do you think we'd at least be able to go there and get a tour or something?? i will probably end up going there regardless, but i really liked the small class atmosphere and the faculty:student ratio at boca 🙁

how long did it take for you guys to get the acceptance package after getting the call and email? I got the email last friday and the call around 2 weeks ago. I replied accepting the spot to the address the email come from, but have yet to get anything in the mail.
Thanks

i just sent an email confirmation, they'll reply back in email

you will get a snail mail in a week or two

Some Googling says that it's definitely true, and in fact happened a few weeks ago, although I guess it was just made official a few days ago.

I'm shocked that they continued to interview students and accept them with this on the horizon. Sorry to everyone that was set on UM@FAU.

when were they planning to inform us of this? 😕

if i wasn't on this forum i would think that everything was exactly the same and would still be researching apartments in boca...

I had my heart set on Boca. Thanks for the sympathy, Aggro. 🙁

On a new note, then - what did people think of the Miami campus? Were the students enthusiastic/friendly and did they have a strong connection with faculty members? How was the overall community? What does a standard week look like (is study time built into the schedule like at Boca)? Thanks for any answers that people are willing to give... I was a Boca-only applicant.

Lol, ok so judging from the last couple posts this is what has been decided on and is not just a rumor? Hmmm... wonder how/when they will officially tell us this. My interviewer mentioned absolutely nothing about this when he called me two weeks ago... I guess we will see what happens. I heart Boca and Miami both equally.
😍

I got an email this morning from the admissions office telling us about the decision from FAU, and telling us that all the 2014 students will be relocated to the main campus in August. So all admitted to both schools no longer can decide what campus to attend. The only thing that was weird was that those who were accepted to UM@FAU only, they hope will be able to attend this August on the main campus. I am fine in that I was leaning to going to the main campus anyway. Don't know what other people have heard.

yea they seemed really happy. its not PBL-like Boca.

As far as close w/ faculty, i think that's what you make of it. from what i hear, you get paired with faculty from the beginning at boca, and that might not be true so - idk.

but both of my parents are med school faculty and they would all say that its what you make of it - and you really only get close with some during 3rd year anyway. Jackson memorial is great, because its big so you can either be really active or disappear depending on what you want to do.

So this morning I was told there would be an adcom meeting today, however my buddy called and was told the meeting would be tomorrow? Lol what is the deal with this school?

Also, do they plan on refunding everyone's travel expense for their boca visit? I'm obviously being sarcastic here, but it's upsetting I wasted my time and money interviewing at a program that no longer exists.

Well if You get accepted to the "boca campus", you automatically get accepted to the Miami campus now. I don't know if they're really looking at applicants from a Boca point of view now ( they used to because Boca accepted different types of students from Miami).

good luck either way!

I got the email too...a lot of stuff I liked about Boca isn't available at the main campus but I do think that it will be what you make of it. I'll probably end up at UMiami come August.

haha I hope not. Snow in Miami would be vastly disappointing...not to mention that I don't think its ever gotten cold enough there to form ice let alone snow.

haha...Actually, we had a really bad cold snap several weeks ago, and it got into the low 30's/upper 20's at its coldest point. It snowed/flurried from Jacksonville to Orlando/Tampa and I had ice on my car for the first time ever! The bad thing was that it killed a lot of iguanas and other things; it also killed a lot of oranges and strawberries.

haha...Actually, we had a really bad cold snap several weeks ago, and it got into the low 30's/upper 20's at its coldest point. It snowed/flurried from Jacksonville to Orlando/Tampa and I had ice on my car for the first time ever! The bad thing was that it killed a lot of iguanas and other things; it also killed a lot of oranges and strawberries.

Lol oh yeah! I have a friend in tampa who took pictures of ice on his car. But then again, how many times per decade does that really happen?
