well, now that all of that boca people have been added to miami.... it seems my shot at an interview might be over :/.

isn't the class full/overfull by default at this point?

happened in the mornings when i went to HS in orlando on some days, i can't imagine it happening in miami tho.

Yeah, that was probably a once in a lifetime thing. I think it was only the 2nd time ever that it was that cold in Miami. Tonight and tomorrow it'll be in the 40's but that's still better than most of the country.

That's what I'm guessing. Oh well...

so for those of us who only interviewed at boca...

do you think they'll take us on a tour if we visit the main campus? i want to see what it's like, i've never even been to miami!

I bet they'd give us a campus tour if we let them know long enough in advance. Maybe we could attend a presentation about curriculum too or something... I'd like to know what the class schedule is like. Maybe we could attend an interview day and just skip the interview portion?

When are you thinking about going? I'm from Washington and would like to visit the main campus. I'm thinking about doing it over my spring break (March 13-21). If we got a group of us together, I'm sure they'd be willing to show us around.

I'm sure if you guys called ahead they'd be able to arrange something, particularly if it was a group of people at the same time. Regardless, there are interviews Monday and Friday and I'm sure someone would be willing to give you guys a tour then.

As for class schedule, we basically do anatomy/histology and a little bit of cell bio/embryology the first 8 weeks of school (3 anatomy exams, 2 histo, 1 cell bio), then it's 4 weeks of Biochem/Genetics (2 exams), 6 weeks of microbiology/immunology (2 exams), and 4 weeks of physiology/pharmacology (2 exams). That takes you through to about a month into second semester at which point it's organ modules till the end of second year with some PBL sprinkled in (minimal compared to boca, maybe like 2 2 week sessions of pure PBL).

Generally up to 4 or 5 classes a day M W F, 2 or 3 Tues/Thurs. Physical exam training or something else is either Tuesday or Thursday afternoon (never both), depending on your society.

Almost all classes are recorded (morning lectures usually up by 1, afternoon lectures by 4 or 5). There's definitely not the same faculty to student ratio that there is at the Boca campus, but trust me the place is big enough that if you want a mentor you can find one 😉.

for those of you that are curious, heres a copy of the official email that i received today regarding ummsm@fau moving to the miami campus (btw, im devastated...boca campus is literally 10 mins from my house):

In January 2010, Florida Atlantic University announced that it was ending its affiliation agreement with the University of Miami to develop an independent medical school at the Boca campus.
After considerable thought and evaluation, the leadership of the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine believes that it will be in our student’s best interest to have this transition begin immediately.
To expedite this transition, we will be relocating the FAU/UM Class of 2014, scheduled to begin medical school in mid-August, back to the UM Medical Campus in Miami.
If you have been accepted to attend the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine at the FAU/Regional Campus in Boca Raton, we will be offering you a seat at the Main Campus in Miami.
Many of you have applied to, and have been accepted at both the Main and Regional Campuses. We regret that you will no longer have a choice of which campus to attend.
For students who were accepted only at the Regional Campus in Boca, we remain hopeful that you will be able to change venues and join us on the Miami Campus of the Miller School of Medicine in August.
If you have questions about this transition, please do not hesitate to contact me in the Admissions Office at 305-243-3234.

Sincerely,

Richard S. Weisman, Pharm.D.
Associate Dean for Admissions
University of Miami Miller School of Medicine

Has anyone heard back from the adcom meeting yesterday? (good or bad)

just got an email about them giving a tour on march 15th! i'm probably gonna go then

Interesting choice of dates, isn't March 15th when all of the medical schools need to have a full class by?

I wonder if anyone who applied to the Boca campus only is going to give up their seat. After all, they weren't interest in the Miami campus in the first place for one reason or another.

May 15th is that date. And I'm not sure if it's the date they have to have a full class by so much as the date people who have multiple acceptances have to make a choice, thereby freeing admission spots for those who are still waiting.

I just called in to reserve my spot on the tour too! I like the fact that the school took the time to put on an orientation for us... and going to Miami over Spring Break makes the transcontinental ticket seem like a more reasonable purchase.

If anyone decides to stay an extra day before or after the tour, we should do something exciting... like go snorkeling or hit up the zoo. (hey, I'm from a small town... don't make fun of my fascination with zoos)

Does anyone know for sure if faculty at UM Boca will also be moving to the Miami campus? This would probably make sense if the faculty are part of UM and not FAU.

Just out of curiosity, should those of us waiting to hear back post-interview from BOTH campuses be worried?

i think so....

i called today and the lady told me that the adcom met yesterday and the next meeting is on 2/24

heres to more waiting....

Not necessarily. Even if they don't extend you an offer on 2/24, you can be sure that many spots will be vacated on 5/15.

Wow, that's bizarre. I'm not sure what to say in that case. Have they given you a time frame on how long it will take them to review your file or a reason why it has yet to be reviewed?

the only reason i have been given is that my interviewer may have been slow doing his review....therefore it gets put in the file for committee late...

but they always tell me the next meeting for sure...they have been saying thatg since january and once again told me that today...

I was WL at boca on 12/9 if that matters

Hmmm.... Do you remember the interviewers name by any chance? LOL. Just so I can expect a longer wait than the two weeks. Thanks.

I hope we aren't in trouble. I interviewed 1/22 at the main campus only and haven't heard anything yet. Stayin positive though!

i called today and confirmed also! i'm not sure how many days i'll be staying, but i would be interested in the zoo or just walking around the city (never been there!)

and this may be a dumb question but... what should we wear for this tour? should i wear my suit? i mean we're not interviewing but it is still an official visit 😕

I kinda wish I can go again...I already visited the UM Main campus before but was more focused on my interview and stuff. I would like to spend a whole day (day + night) exploring the area and such but I have nooo funds. Let us know how it goes! 🙂

Lejeunesage, are you still thinking about UMiami?

So got the mail acceptance letter. It says you can email or mail. Did the rest of you guys just email to the address given and get a response from them saying paper response was not needed. The original email said to do both, mail and email, but the letter said 'or.' kinda confused. just want to save my seat
thanks

I was spastic... I emailed the admissions office, then emailed Dr. Weisman and told him that my paper letter would take a while to arrive in Florida (another letter took over two weeks to reach me from the East Coast). He said that most students just send the email first and then a formal paper letter a little later. I'd do both.

Congrats on the acceptance, by the way!

I'd definitely be up for wandering around the city too. I'm not sure about the clothing, though... I was thinking about wearing a suit just in case. I wonder what the students generally wear... does anyone know if Miami has a dress code like Boca's?

I did both, but I personally handed in the letter since I do research right across the street from the admissions office in the Miami campus. I would definitely do both if I were you, just in case.

Did anyone stay at a nice cheap hotel near the Miami campus? I'm hoping to find one with a free shuttle bus...

Hmm I personally stayed in Biscayne Bay but I saw a motel that was right next to campus ( I think it was rodeway...not sure) but it looked VERY VERY nasty. Maybe they'll have student hosts?

Personally, I would wear a suit because most schools require suits for hosted "Second Look Day". Dress to impress never fails. Have fun! 😀

Yep, I am being spastic. 🙂 I will send a formal letter also then. There wasnt a sheet to sign in the packet right? Thanks for the congrats! super excited about Miami and don't want to lose my seat bc of miscommunication about how to accept.

No, March 15th is the day med schools need to have a full class, May 15th is the day students holding multiple offers need to decide.

anyone else not get this email about the tour? is it just for boca kids?

I got into boca but I didn't get an email, so....

So... you should e-mail them and ask.
Thanks for the clarification, by the way.

Hey, I forgot to ask this question while I was down there... Do they provide notes specific to what you need to know in lecture? Like lecture notes, outlines, or anything else to help you study?

Gracias...

Oh hey, another question. Would brushing up on my Spanish over the next 6 months help (I had maybe 1 year of college Spanish), or is that a waste of my time? I figure I got 6 months and some free time on my hands, so....

The powerpoints from class and any other notes the lecturer wants to provide are all available online, and the day's powerpoint is also printed in the morning and made available for those that go to class. That's basically what you need to know =).

As for the Spanish question, study it if you want to. Obviously knowing Spanish helps, but I'd say focus on enjoying your time before med school starts. If you want to spend a few hours here and there brushing up then go for it, but don't think that it's by any means necessary. Hope that answers your questions.

I'm still waiting for an interview offer. I hope they are still actively interviewing after the Boca campus mess. Let's hope more interview invites go out this month! :luck:

Does anyone know if the admissions committee is making any any offers today?

Interview invite yesterday for Miami campus! Scheduled for 2/22. Does Miami have rolling admission?

Wow! That's awesome! Congrats! I had assumed that with their situation at Boca, they were no longer giving out invites.

I also got the invite last night. So awesome, it was my most-desired interview out of where I was waiting on. Good luck and congrats as well!

Is it rolling because it's more convenient for me to interview later rather than earlier.

Congrats! Yes they do have rolling admissions but they must still have spots if they're still offering interviews so good luck!

I called and asked if it's rolling and whether it's advantageous to schedule earlier rather than later. I seemed to catch her off guard with the question because she paused and then said "Well, at this point, probably not." I really hope I'm not interviewing for a spot on the waitlist but I'll take it regardless.
