Is there anything on the website about research opportunities and/or community service? it seems there is nothing specific and I've tried to search everywhere. I know its a big research university, but what about the opportunities for med students to get involved.

This is one of the webiste from our school

http://umdocs.mededu.miami.edu/

We have student clinics every Tuesday night and we have plenty of health fairs

As for research, there's a new life science park coming soon

http://www.umlsp.com/

Also, we have a professional development center that help students find research

http://www.mededu.miami.edu/MedEd/opdcg/index.htm

The med students also help out on hurricane reliefs, etc

Thanks eeeek!

By the way how is it that UM is private, but they have to take in florida state residents? I always assumed that they were a public university.

don't forget about the picture 🙂

Anyone else e-mail your picture? I haven't received a confirmation that they received it, and my status still stays pending.

Maybe I will call tomorrow.

I think although we are a private university, they get state funding for every FL student they accept I think, so that's how it becomes partially state funded. Good luck with your application, hope to see you here for interviews.

I emailed my picture on the 19th and got a confirmation this afternoon (the 26th).

where are you checking your status? i couldn't find a status page

on the secondary website, under 'returning applicants,' click 'review your activity' and enter your login info. this is the closest thing to a status page that i've seen, though it's rather unspecific as to exactly which parts of the application have been received and which are still pending.

thanks. mine says: Status: Payment accepted, data sent, received, and confirmed!

Do they have any specific programs to get students involved in research? It seems like they just have a research & professional development center that will assist students in finding a mentor.

I just submitted my secondary and I got a confirmation email. The part about the letters of rec really confused me. I thought it was through AMCAS but they wrote this:
Letters of recommendation should be sent to us as a single packet through an electronic service such as VirtualEvals. Do not, under any circumstances have the writers of your letters send them to the Office of Admissions as email attachments. Letters submitted in any format and sent directly to the Office of Admissions will not be accepted. Electronic submission of letters as a single packet is greatly preferred because sending paper letters will necessitate scanning and slow down the admissions process for the applicant.

Just submit the letters via AMCAS. Under the Changes for 2010 link on their website, it explains that the letters should be sent via AMCAS.

i submitted on the 24th and emailed my photo on the same day. i never got a complete email or anything though other than "thanks for submitting"

Just got the e-mail. I submitted a day after you. They must be getting swamped.

Thanks deuist for taking the time to do that. It was very helpful.

did you get an official complete email? all i got was a reply to my photo submission saying "thanks" or whatever

just to clarify, once they received your picture, you get a confirmation email from them saying they have received it, correct?

Yep I got an email from them saying they had everything... then a week or two later the status changed online too to complete.

That is correct. Because UM was the first medical school in the state of florida, we get special funding from the state for students from the state of FL. A significant amount of each class, however, (30-40%) are out of state.

By the way, to add to the community service question:

http://www.med.miami.edu/news/view.asp?id=1165

UM is one of three finalists for an AAMC community service award. If you are concerned about serving the community, you are looking at the right place.

I called them and they said they would send an email when everything was complete. I finished my app on 8/24 and got my picture confirmation the next day. I am wondering when this complete will happen...

Hmm I ended up having to email them my picture twice - someone from the admissions office emailed me specifically asking for it again. When I emailed it the second time, I got a confirmation email the next day saying they had everything complete and ready to go for me.

So you think the photo complete is the complete email?

Well, my email was very clearly a complete email since an actual person had exchanged it back and forth with me. I sent an email to the admissions office asking if my file was complete, like the instructions on the secondary said you could do. After my initial inquiry, here's what my email conversation was:

Jla,

Please resubmit your photograph, you may send it as an attachment to this email. I will need this in order to complete your file.

Thank you,

.Francia G Portacio.

---- (then, i resubmitted it)----

Thank you jla, your file is now ready for review!

..
This email exchange took place *after* i got my first photo complete email (when i sent the photo the first time, Francia replied saying thank you for sending it in). I've never gotten a generic email from their office - it's always been Francia.

Same here... and my status still says pending confirmation. I e-mailed them about it and their response was that I will get a complete e-mail once I am complete, but I submitted a while ago. Not sure what is going on. :/

I called the admissions office today. If you call, provide them with your AAMC ID#, they will tell you what has been received. She also said that complete emails will be sent out when your file is complete.

Just a fyi for people so we have some sort of timeline, I submitted my secondary 8/30 and my secondary has yet to be downloaded she said because they are still processing. Although my recommendation letters have been received, my photo has not but she also said there was a lot of mail pending.

I just e-mailed them today asking about my status and got this...
Yes Andy71600, your file is complete. Good luck!

I don't know why, but I love how she added good luck to that

Anybody else feel that applying to medical school is like having 20 very uncommitted and judgmental pen pals?

Interview! Got in in email monday evening.

Complete 9/1

Sick clinical training in Miami

Yay, interview! Looks like they do Fridays.

Hey all you Miami kids,
Since interviews just started going out I was considering adding this school (also looking at their OOS interview rate I think I have a decent chance) but I am wondering how much the secondary is and if it's very lengthy?
Let me know if you get a chance.
Thanks ladies and gents!
