So I had my interview yesterday.
This school proves that the US News rankings are completely unrepresentative of a school's quality. I think the U is ranked like 38th or something; it should probably be higher, and likely will be in the next few years. It really has everything you could possibly ask for:
- A GIGANTIC hospital that services a major metropolitan area, and the only students that rotate through it are those from the U.
- Specialties headed by world-renowned physicians, particularly the guys in opthamology and spinal injuries. The opthamology department recently performed some mind-blowing procedure that was featured on The Colbert Report.
- A substantial amount of funding and opportunities to research anything you could ever want.
- Hell, you can get clinical experience in anything you'd ever want. Sports medicine? Four professional sports teams go to UM-Jackson. Emergency medicine? A huge trauma center that deals with every emergency in South Florida. Obstetrics? They just hired a guy that's pioneered a half dozen procedures for fetal surgeries. It's ridiculous.
- A curriculum that's broken up in a way that doesn't have you taking exams every other week and constantly stressing out.
- A support system that's instilled from the first day of school. The entire class is divided into groups of 10 to 12 ("societies") that work together and occasionally compete for funsies. Other schools have adopted this idea because apparently, it works extremely well.
Also, it was 95 when I was there. After my day at the hospital, another interviewee and I went out to South Beach and stared at topless girls while watching waves crash on the shore. Students typically live in high-rise apartments about ten minutes south of the hospital; others spend some extra cash and just live on South Beach. Lastly, the dean of admissions laid out exactly how and when they'll review our applications and gave us an exact date when we'll find out our status. He also mentioned that 75-80% of interviewees are accepted or placed on an alternate list.
😍
If anyone has any questions about the interview day, let me know.
