How/when did you find out you are on the temporary waitlist? My letter didn't have the at least temporarily on it.

WHAT?! i just checked their website and their cheapest is 200 bucks for one night!! I think it's Spring Break time, maybe that's why it's so expensive.. hopefully I'll get to stay with a student host

Did you use the "umiami code" or whatever? I used that one around interviews and I thought they would put us in a crappy room like some other hotels have where we used the corporate code but we got an ocean/city view room on the side. it was easily the nicest hotel i stayed at this interview season. And one of the cheapest.

Ya good luck to everyone still waiting/interviewing at Miami!. In my experience it has been the most straight forward, down to earth, and reasonable medical school to deal with. I truly believe their mantra about caring for their students and putting everything in to making an enjoyable educational experience. Moreso than any of the other schools I've dealt with.
The students on my interview day seemed to love it and our tour guide was hilarious. He said he loved wearing the long white coat and walking around the hospital because he felt like a "kid playing doctor".

Anyway, hope to meet many of you come august!
 
Does anybody know if post-interview decisions are sent via email or snail mail? Or if it depends on which decision you are getting?
 
Scratch that last post... Just got email notification that I'm on the alternate list. I have a new question instead. For those of you on the temporary alternate list, did it say this in the email you received or did it only say this in the snail mail letter that followed? Thanks! And hopefully there is some decent alternate list movement in the coming months, I really liked Miami! :xf: 😀

Edit: Also, has anybody called the admissions office to see if and when we are allowed to know our waitlist rank? thanks!

just got waitlist email today as well

called office and they wont give info on rank and they said they stop interviewing march 29...i would think the earliest they would pull off the list is may
 
I got the alternate list email as well. I just called the admissions office and they said that the distinction between temporary alternate list and alternate list isn't made in the emails, but in the official letter that they send in snail mail.....looks like we have to wait a few more days to find out the real results! Good luck everyone! 🙂

Out of curiosity, when did you all interview? I interviewed in late January and haven't heard anything back. Would it be okay to call the admissions office and ask for the status of my application post-interview?

I interviewed Late February. The most recent AdCom meeting was March 10th. At my interview we were told that they may not get to the more recent interviewees, but even if they get to ur file they may not make a decision on it. So at this point they are most likely still keeping your file under review. But I do know that they are full because of Boca closing and everything and that they are now only putting people on one of the alternate lists (or possibly rejecting?). They do expect a good deal of movement from the alternate lists, which is good.

It couldn't hurt to call but most likely they will tell u that no decision has been made and u are still under review...

i just got the waitlist email yesterday and interviewed in late nov....so trust me./...they can take their sweet time
 
Did any florida residents participate in the MSHCMP at UM? Do you think this gave you an advantage and helped you get the acceptance to the medical school?
 
are they still giving out interviews? have a couple of updates i'd like to send.. but not if they're done interviewing (which it seems they might be if they're full?)

twice: Jan and May of last year....but I don't think specific month is important..just get your scores in as early as possible for an early app.

Twice as well: August '08 and March '09. I agree with Hifey, the month doesn't matter. Just be sure to have your scores as early as possible before you apply, preferably before June. I took it as early as possible to make sure I had enough time to take it again, if necessary, which it was.
 
Hey guys. For those of you have completed or know about the scholarship form, I'm on the alternate list, but they give us the option of filling out the scholarship form now just in case we are later accepted. There are 2 essays; one for financial resources and the other for diversity. Are we expected to complete the diversity essay no matter what or only if we are going for a diversity scholarship? I highly doubt I am diverse enough to have that essay become a factor, but I will obviously still wright the essay if we are expected to. Anybody know about this? thanks!

I thought that we are automatically considered for merit scholarships, but if you want to apply for the diversity scholarship, that is when you have a form to fill out.

it's def not for merit. For need and/or diversity only. They consider everyone for merit automatically... It was at the bottom of the alternate list email I received the other day.

Absolutely loved it. 😀 Definitely my favorite school now. I was worried at first about the big city aspect, but I found a nice place in Brickell right between the metro and the people-mover... the different neighborhoods makes Miami feel like a conglomerate of smaller towns instead of an overwhelming one.

The administrators were really open about everything... they reassured us about Jackson's situation (it probably won't affect students, only residents - they're thinking about dropping the North and South hospitals or something) and apologized for the Boca situation.
 
what second look? I didn't know about UM's second look... and I was accepted ?

How did you go about finding your apartment? I was thinking about Brickell as well but heard it was expensive. Thanks!

awesome! which building did you end up in? (i'm the girl from MI, you can PM me your answer if you want 😀) i'm probably gonna go down there next month to hunt for a place.

It wasn't really a second look. It was actually a date that admissions set up for people who were accepted to the Boca campus to visit the main campus; so I guess it was really a "first look" for them. I don't think UM has a real second look.

Yeah I was thinking about Brickell as well but because I'm so far away I don't even know where to start. I've gone apartment hunting before but I've always been able to see the place. I'm probably going down in June to check out apartments but I want to start getting an idea now. Can you PM me what building you liked? maybe we could be neighbors 🙂

There are lots of apartment complexes in Brickell. Most of them are condos that are owned by someone else that you rent from (not apartment complexes). Just make sure you are as east as possible.

No way! It's already very competitive for private schools.
 
I haven't heard anything about tuition being cut, but I can confirm that it won't be rising next year.
 
Any nontrad students or students who have done grad work to compensate for low GPA getting in?

Alright, here's our opinions about the rentals we found. We visited apartments in the morning and then met up with a realtor who showed us some higher-end (but reasonably priced) condos in the afternoon. All of the listed prices are either a studio or a 1-1.

Seybold Pointe - I loved it, but my fiance really wants Brickell for the location. We technically didn't meet with the realtor for the building (a really nice maintenance woman snuck us in and gave us a tour of some open units), so we can't be sure on price... however, online the 1-1 go from $850 to about $1000. Apparently several med students live in the building (we met a few of the guys and they seem great). Nice size of room, w/ washer and dryer in unit. There is 1st floor bike storage and the building is near a grocery store and right across from the metro. Free guest parking. Not the best area of town, but I was comfortable in it and it didn't seem dangerous at all. Biking distance or one stop on the metro from Jackson. This one is one of our top three picks.

Highland Park Lofts - hardwood floors and granite countertops, very close to Seybold Pointe. $850-1000 for a 1-1, and biking distance to Jackson (walking to metro). Small deck provided (BBQ anyone?), but no overhead lights in bedroom (alright, I'm picky). Lots of drawers, comes w/ dishwasher, fridge, microwave, several med students in building. You can rent-to-buy if you like it (the units go for $180,000 on the market, but the manager told us we'd steal it at $140,000... appraisal value is $125,000 so sounds a little iffy to us). You get one parking spot with the room. No workout room (all other buildings had one), but I liked the kitchen a lot. Fiance thought the building felt a little cold... not our favorite place, but it's more upscale than Seybold for those of you who are looking for something a little nicer and close to campus.

Miami Bay Club - this is up NE of campus, in the Biscayne Bay area. The building literally is on the bay, and it's not high-rise style (sprawled out a little more). Gated community with free BBQs (yay!) and a weight room (w/o dumbells). There's a tennis court and pool. Pet-friendly building, but no washer/dryer in room (there's one set per floor for $1.50/wash or dry). Each unit gets two parking spots, one in the gated parking area and one in a covered gated parking area. Prices range from $995 - 1050ish right now for a 14 month lease (there's a deal going on right now that might be extended) - normal prices are only about $50 more. The more expensive apartments are on the side overlooking the bay. There's a bus stop nearby, but the building is not on the metro. I'd have to get a second car ( 🙁 ), but they do have free parking for it... and it's a pretty decent place if you have transportation. Contact is Mayra Almanzar (305-573-1987) if anyone is interested.

22 Biscayne Bay - same area as Miami Bay Club. Double-closet in pretty large room, w/ washer+dryer in unit. Granite countters and cabinets all over the place (I like storage space). One parking spot provided, $75/mo for an additional. Pet friendly, and dumbells in the w/or room. Prices range from $1000-1250. Management appears friendly (she was bouncing around happily before we showed up - we saw her through the window). Again, driving distance to campus (no metro).

In Brickell:

One Plaza West Brickell - somebody visit this building and let us know how it is, please! We didn't get a chance, and our realtor said there weren't any open units (in her database).

Camden Brickell - apartment complex right next to metro and people-mover, with a Publix nextdoor. Pet-friendly with no monthly fee for animals ($500 one-time fee). Leases range from 7-15 months, with 14-15 months having the best rate. There are studios, 1-1, 1-1.5 and 2-2 available. The people seem very down-to-earth, which we liked... the marketing manager saw that we were laid-back and sat on the counter to talk to us in the show-unit. $125 app fee per resident (unless you're married) and $360 admin fee. Prices range from 900-1300 for studios, 1300+ for 1:1 (didn't ask about anything bigger). The building has the best w/o room we've found. Washer/dryer in unit. Pretty large rooms... the counters are not granite or anything, but the room feels more liveable (for the same price as the more upper-class condos around it). Quite a few med students live in the building. This is one of our favorites in Brickell, but the style of living might not be for everyone, depending on what you're used to / looking for. I'm willing to pay the same price for a homey feel instead of a big city high end feel. Free internet outside of your room, but you have to pay extra to get it in your own room. Water/electricity/heat/etc. not included.

AXIS on Brickell - another of our favorites in Brickell. This one is a condo complex, with prices around $1450/mo. Definitely more high-end, but still friendly. Washer/dryer in unit. This one is the granite countertop-wooden floor type. Rooms are pretty large, and the building is literally across from Camden/the metro.

Wind by Neo - do you like meditation rooms? how about gossamer drapes in all-white rooms? do you consider yourself to be a "chic young professional urbanite"? this place might be for you! ... Alright, seriously... the rooms are actually cheaper than any of the other Brickell places we found ($1300-1400ish for a 1:1), and the feel is very high-end big cityish. They have a racketball court in the workout room (yay!), but I felt the place felt a little stuck-up. Again, if you're trying for the fancy big city thing, this place might be a perfect fit. Granite counters, hard-wood floors, etc. I think internet is included in rent. Pet-friendly, and there may or may not be a size limit on dogs (we saw a big one!). Not right next to the metro, but definitely less than a 5 minute walk from it.

Latitude on the River - we actually liked this one a lot, but it's about 5 minute walk to the metro. Large rooms, with reasonable rent (the seller of one is asking $1550, but we heard one of the realtors in charge of the building say the seller would take $1450 for sure). Granite counters and hardwood floors, but friendly (not too showy). Internet and water are included in the price. Pet-friendly, with free parking spot included. I'm sure there is guest parking - there is also valet parking, and it may be the same thing.

Hope this helps some people! We're going to be watching AXIS, Camden and Seybold as our top three.
 
Question... I've been complete since like January, but haven't heard anything. Have they just not gotten around to rejecting me?
 
Alright guys, very random question for any of you who are current medical students / from Miami.

I just looked over the UM student insurance page, and it looks like we don't have dental covered. How does everyone get their teeth cleaned? Is there some school in Miami where you can pay a small fee to get your teeth done by hygienist students?

I looked Axis up online for reviews and stuff and I actually really like it too. It's a bit pricey so I might need to find a roommate. Thanks for all the info!

omg Leonora, awesome post, thanks!! i'm a little worried about some of the places in Brickell, when i started doing online research i found some pretty terrible reviews for them on apartmentratings.com 🙁 did anyone you talk to express any concerns about living there? were most people pretty happy?

also, does anyone know if you qualify for in-state tuition after living in FL for a year?
