Seems like there are a lot of accepts that intend to enroll at UMN this fall. Anyone interested in making a thread specific to accepts?

If we all want to maintain our identities I completely understand.

For what it's worth, UMD accepts 60, UMN-TC accepts ~120. The two classes merge 3rd and 4th years for clinical rotations (primarily in the Cities, although RPAP pulls ~50-60 into rural communities for most of 3rd year).

Maybe you're not referring to the final class size, but if you are, the U actually matriculates about 170 each year. I'm not sure if you accidentally typed 120 instead of 170, haha...

Anyway, just in case you misunderstood what they meant, they were referring to the committee minutes noting the amount of people accepted, trying to determine what "accepted" meant in context of both schools or just the U.

I'm not saying you didn't understand, but just in case! 🙂

When placed on the waitlist, are you given your position on the list? I wonder if it is possible to find out where you stand relative to other applicants on the list.

There is no position as of yet. The U (apparently) informs all applicants by May 15th of their acceptance, rejection, or placement on the ranked "alternate list," which is apparently different than the wait list. It seems that on May 15th you are able to determine your position relative to other applicants.

This is all per my wait list letter. Hope that helps!

I was starting to think that as well until I noticed it's mainly the late accepts with such a high proportion of planning to attend the U. A surprisingly large number of the people accepted early in this thread have acceptances to Mayo as well and seem to be planning to go there. I assume this is probably a pretty standard trend. The people that didn't get accepted until later in the season are more likely to not have acceptances to more desirable schools and so are very likely to attend here. Let's remember the U runs very late in the season so if you're waiting on them it's probably your best option. There are of course the people that live locally and would rather stay close to home, but the primary point is that other than an elevated number of applicants the rates of acceptance are probably no different than previous years. Wait list movement will come down to number of acceptances offered and how it compares to previous years. After being so badly burned a few years ago accepting too many I'm betting they've learned their lesson. Expect movement, how much though nobody knows.

Weird, my packet only has a general letter regarding financial aid, but no application form, and in the letter it says "A financial aid application packet will be mailed to you after Jan 1, 2010"

I know that site too, and I already submitted the application before I actually got my acceptance letter packet (cuz the deadline is 3/1/10, which doesn't make sense at all...). But I just thought that the application form should be in the acceptance packet too.

I sent an "update" letter in the fall including a new research presentation and new job. Should I send a letter of interest explaining that the U is my 1st choice? Call again? Continue holding tight? I don't want to be menacing to the admissions office, but, at least judging by the interview dates of people hearing back on this thread, it feels like I somehow fell through the cracks. Have you heard anything back yet? You and I are in the same boat--I interviewed 11/5 and have heard nothing back. I wonder when we will be reviewed...
 
Here are the numbers from the March 3 student council minutes.

(i) Admissions:
1. Done w/ first reviews: had 3037 applicants; offered 27% applicants interviews; 180 acceptances have been offered; 166 applicants holding offers; 152 people on wait list; number does not include MD/PhDs
2. Full class is 170

This resolved the question we had before about the numbers in a previous meeting being co-mingled with Duluth. See below the January minutes with 3900 applicants. Doesn't MSAR list Minnesota TC as getting 3200 applicants last year? So they have less applicants this year or the MSAR is a combined number? Edit: Total applicants last year was 3259 to TC so the applications to the TC actually dropped by more than 200. That's interesting considering the comments about record numbers of applicants and interviews people have mentioned. Maybe Duluth had a huge increase as people started applying more broadly now.

This set of minutes seems to be specific to the TC since it notes class size of 170. It's nice that they spelled out how many offers have been made. So it looks like they have about 50 or so acceptances yet to offer if previous years are any measure. Is the wait list normally that big? Getting down to nail biting time! 😱 🙂

Thanks for the info, Tutmos. That's interesting. Seem's like an especially high percentage of interview offers - greater than one in four. About the waitlist, I do think it typically holds a large number of applicants. In my mind, at least 120. I certainly hope they don't have a waitlist of 200. That's just leading people on.

Hope to hear back soon. Going on 12 weeks now.

Fingers are crossed for you! I am sure you will hear soon...

The percent may seem high for interviews but I think they screen pretty hard for secondaries.

Tutmos-why do you think they will offer 50 more acceptances?

Not yet. But I think the admissions committee meets every other Wednesday - yesterday being one they would have met on. So, if I got discussed yesterday, I should either be getting a call or a letter in the next few days.

I think there are a few of us from way back when. It at least helps me feel like my file didn't fall behind the radiator or something. I hope we both hear (good news) soon. :xf:

I'm just going by the historical numbers we've seen in the past and actually trying to be a bit conservative. Off the top of my head, I had some wine 6 hours ago before I went to sleep so I'm a little cloudy, they accept 230-250 initially and after people drop them they still need to pull a fair number from the wait list to reach the 170 class size. The one year they blundered and had too many I believe they accepted close to 300, ending up with 186 or so that kept acceptances after the May 15 deadline.

Maybe someone can correct me if I'm thinking about this wrong.

Edit: The interview thing is because a lot of people don't attend interviews from OOS, especially from a school that runs so late in the year. Many of the people they invite to interviews are already holding acceptances elsewhere.

Here's from May 07: · 242 acceptances offered, 198 holding spots; have until May 15th

April 07: 190 acceptances have been sent out out.

It looks like they might actually stop around 200 till May, at least from 07 info. Then they went up to 245 after that. Yuck

I'm pretty sure the MSAR is a combined number, but I don't have my MSAR with me to check.

That just means they've now gone through all of the applications once and decided who to interview etc., I think. I assume interviews will be running all the way through March and maybe even a few in April.

I'm starting to get a little worried that anyone interviewed after January 1 is just in the runnning for a wait list spot, unless you're a URM or really stand out in some other way, which would really stink. It's mostly guessing at this point but there's not much else to do now. 🙁

I really should have applied early.

The 3250 number wasn't combined, it's on the TC website right next to the class size of 170. Unless the minutes had a typo the applications actually dropped this year by 200.

What makes you think that? It's two weeks since the last time? It seems like they might only be making calls once a month now. Being 3 weeks out from my interview I don't expect to be looked at for a long time. : (

Accepted!!! Got the call about 20 minutes ago. Incredible feeling. Now I can focus on becoming a doctor rather than getting into medical school. Good luck to the others waiting to hear back!

Interviewing on Monday!

I know I'm really late in the game (didn't submit the supplemental until the last possible day), so I'm not expecting much, but it's exciting regardless. As an out-of-stater, I'm pretty happy just getting to the interview 🙂

I hope I can find my way around Minneapolis and the Mayo building at 7 am... 😕

Minneapolis is easy (depending on where you're staying, I suppose). The admissions office is much less easy to find (it was for me at least). Just make sure you know the whole room number (as in the letter as well as the numbers).

You must be a fellow UMD student! Good luck in the interview, I know lots of people who interviewed this late last year and got accepted outright. Historically there are always like 3 from UMD who get in, so far you're the only other person I know who has an interview.

Yes, I am at UMD! The Swenson/Duluth combo was a dead giveaway, huh? I'm pretty excited about this interview. Luckily, I've already been accepted elsewhere, so I'm not stressing out over it too much. It'll just be a fun get-away. I've never really been to Minneapolis, though, and I'm from SD, so who knows how I'd do living there!

Thanks for the lucky thoughts and the info! I don't even actually know of anyone else who has applied there. I'm a biochem major, so most of my friends are going to pharmacy school.

I have no doubt they actively watch this site. You often see people looking at this sub-forum that have been registered for years with zero posts etc. It only makes sense that they should. For one, if something disparaging is being said about the school they might want to make sure "someone" addresses it or corrects it if false. They also might want to look out for people trying to pull a fast one in the process that might post about it here. SDN is such a large forum in the medical education field I expect every school has at least one person that keeps an eye on it.

No, it's only been three weeks. I expect I've got quite some time to wait. I'm trying to make sure I don't relax for the rest of this semester in case I have to apply next year.

I'm in the same boat.. I realized that even if I get pulled off the wait list, I still have to start the application process, especially if it starts to get into June. I had never thought about that until about two weeks ago, but I have to start pulling together ideas for updates and new letters.

I'm still optimistic about getting a chance to get in though, so I'm not giving up yet!

My wife and I will have to have the big talk about applying to other schools next time if it doesn't work out this year. It'll cost me well over $100k to go to any other school, that's above and beyond tuition, so it's a REALLY big pill to swallow.
 
What are the next steps after you send in your letter of intent to matriculate? How do we know if they recieve it? Thanks

I don't know if they will even acknowledge it, they did not seem to give any outright response to update letters as far as I know.
If you are really worried about it you could just give the admissions office a call.
