I completely agree with the above posters. Putting the majority of applicants on a waitlist is a surefire way of deterring awesome applicants. I also have a SO who needs to transfer jobs and will not wait until the last minute to jeopardize my relationship. It is a shame considering how much I enjoyed my visit at Pittsburgh. Hopefully some adcoms will read this thread and start lobbying for some early waitlist movement, but that is probably just wishful thinking. 🙄

PittMed admissions people (at least two) do read this website [straight from the horse's mouth], but maybe not this specific thread? STICKY IT ON THE MAIN PAGE!

Accepted!

Just found out via status page update today. Interviewed 10/21. YAY! Pitt is one of my top choices.

and just to make sure, the status page where people are finding acceptance/waitlist/rejection decisions is just the online admissions systems we used to submit our secondary applications, right? i just don't want to be missing anything. thanks!

Correct.

Is there anyone here who is still waiting to hear about an interview for more than 2 or so months? I'm starting to wonder if my app got lost or something. I sent an e-mail but haven't heard anything.

Got this on my status page today:

In these very competitive times, it becomes increasingly difficult for us to choose the best among the outstanding people who submit applications to us. The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine has decided not to admit you in this application year.

I interviewed in late October.

Accepted!!! I just randomly checked my status update on the pitt website and found that I had been accepted. Not sure when the status actually updated though. I interviewed on 10/26!

I emailed Pitt about when the waitlist people will see the light of day again and they said May. So lame.

May? Damn, I might just withdraw then if I ever get my first acceptance. That is super late.

Congrats on the invite thecleaner. I think you will really like Pitt. I had a really good time getting to know the school and the area. Just don't know how the weather will turn out in Dec bc it was pretty cold when I went in October

Thecleaner..you'll have a great time at Pitt. I think the best part about Pittsburgh was the actual city and the proximity of the undergraduate campus. Just relax and b yourself. You have a 50% chance of getting in at this point!

Of eventually getting in. As we've discovered, there are few outright acceptances with much of the class coming from the waitlist.

Hmm, it's coming up on almost 3 months without a word, anyone else in a similar situation? I checked last years thread and there is didn't seem to be many invites in the last half of November and December. Pitt seems awesome, too.

what makes u think we have a 50% of even eventually getting in? where is there data to substantiate that? Id love to know how u know this? i know the MSAR and princeton review have lower figures for interviewees.

I estimated a rough 40-45% based on some second-hand USNews numbers. Apparently this year they interviewed less people. Then they decided to accept less people. Weird season for Pitt.

Overall: 5413 applied, 1031 interviewed, 453 were accepted, 147 enrolled (44% interviewees accepted)
In-state: 845 applied, 199 interviewed, 99 were accepted, 46 enrolled (50% in-state interviewees accepted)
Out of State: 4568 applied, 832 interviewed, 354 were accepted, 101 enrolled (43% out of state interviewees accepted)

My status updated sometime this afternoon - waitlisted. 🙄 Surprised I wasn't outright rejected, actually.

I received an interview invite sometime in August and after a couple of acceptances, I withdrew my application because I couldn't generate the funds to go there. Recently got hold of some money and called Pitt up to see if I could get my interview back and guess what? They said YES! I'm really surprised and fortunate.

someone said they interviewed like 900 this year too
I interviewed on 11/6, and they said they would interview 900 and make about 400 offers. That's a 44.44% chance of getting in (at some point). Not bad, really.

How many of those will come off the waitlist? 350?

I received an interview invite this morning. The available dates are throughout January.

I interviewed on 11/6 too!! I want to find out their decision already, but I'm afraid to, at the same time.:scared: When do you think we'll find out? From looking at this thread, it seems that people find out around 3 weeks after their interview.

Just so you know, last year I was waitlisted, but was pulled off the waitlist in either Feb or early March (I don't remember exactly). I know they pulled a punch of people off of the waitlist in March, so you will still have plenty of time to make your decision. If you really are interested in Pitt, I HIGHLY recommend that you send in a Letter of Interest. Say specifically why you love Pitt and why you think you'd make a good addition to the class. Also, if you have time constraints because of family issues, be honest and tell them about it. I totally remember how frustrating the waitlist can be, but don't give up! Good luck everyone!

A 10/28 interviewee just received an acceptance yesterday.

Anyone else get faked out by their "It was a magical night in Pittsburgh..." email?

...and I thought they were referring to the magical evening their adcom met and admitted me from the waitlist

They said no notifications by email, but I was like "magical"? Maybe they are notifying me for being "magical"? Then I quickly realized no they weren't. THEN I saw they will be looking at the waitlist in April! I really liked Pitt, but c'mon, April? 😱

I know. April is worse than many non-rolling schools. Gah. 🙁

I know they said April in the email, but I still think they'll begin movement in March. They used the "accept a few, reject a few, waitlist many" approach last year, and I expect them to follow their pattern again this year. The only difference between the two cycles so far is that they're being explicit about what they're doing, telling us in letters and emails, whereas last year there was confusion in the Pitt thread as so many people were being waitlisted.

I think they're a little wary of committing to early dates, in case they have to push stuff back for whatever reason. People expected mid-October notifications, and they had to push them back to the first week of November. It's better to surprise people than disappoint them.

Just my thoughts. I'm probably relying on last year's experience too much and they really won't start until April, but I just don't see why they would change their strategy from last year.

in general, schools seem to over-estimate review time for the reason you mentioned. they want to seem early rather than late (and so they don't have to deal with a bunch of calls from neurotic pre-meds).

So...anyone want to withdraw from Pitt and improve my odds? I'd be willing to negotiate a price 🙂

I just wanted to say good-bye and good luck! I was blown away by the facilities (especially the Wiser center WOW!) at U Pitt, and was really stunned by how nice Pittsburgh seemed to be (and it's a very gorgeous city). However, I can only chose one, and I know Pittsburgh is not for me personally. Hope this free spot helps someone soon!

Got the acceptance letter today in the mail! Interviewed end of october. Really psyched about this school since the gf is thinking about cmu for grad school!

You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar.

Interviewed on 10/28 and haven't heard anything back yet

Guess no news is good news at this point . . .😕

i interviewed 10/12 and still have no decision on my status page...i'm confused also (my only guess is my faculty interviewer didn't get my review in for a while since she was a transplant surgeon and seemed pretty busy). i'm definitely hoping that i'll be rewarded for the wait...

Hi guys,
I am going to be staying at the Wyndham Garden Hotel for my interview, does anyone know if this is accessible by the 28x? If not, can someone please suggest an alternate route please?
Thanks

Hope this didn't get to you too late
There are two 28x bus stops near the hotel (Fifth avenue and Atwood, or Fifth avenue and Chesterfield) They're both just about 3 blocks from the hotel. It was only 3 dollars. I took it when leaving Pittsburgh and it was a 45min to 1 hour ride. I wish I had known when I got into Pittsburgh, the cab ride from the airport to the hotel was close to $50.
The hotel also offers a shuttle that can drop you off at Scaife Hall (it's a 5 to 10 min walk).
PittMed was really great, students and admissions people were all really nice and encouraging. Facilities were awesome and the campus is huge.

Good luck

It's tough to find words to describe Pitt's medical campus. It's probably the most impressive one I've seen; the atmosphere is just phenomenal and its integration into the city is great. The buildings are amazing too. Their biomedical sciences center is almost obnoxiously big and the hospital is beautiful.

EDIT: I should say hospitals*, but I was referring in particular to Presbyterian

EDIT: AND it's huge. Like 1500+ beds.
