yea, i just got that email too....been on the waitlist since last year (december, i think?)

weird cause i already sent them a letter. do you guys think i should send another. Pitt is definitely one of my top choices :xf:

Did any of you that received the email send a letter of interest or intent in?

Given the wording of that email and the fact that not all waitlisted applicants got it, I'd imagine that a short response telling them that you're definitely still interested would suffice

Yeah. I sent a letter of interest in January, then sent a letter of intent (informing them they're my #1) just a few weeks ago.

So, do people think the letter is an unofficial acceptance?

Is this true? Are there waitlisted applicants who did not receive that email today?

Huh, this is really confusing. I also got the letter, so I'm hoping that it is a pseudo offer of admission!

This is truly unorthodox...

Anyway, I'm sending them a nice letter telling them: OMGOMGOMGYESYESPLZ!!!!!!11111

By the way, I hadn't gotten around sending them my letter of intent, which I was planning to do this week.

I received the email today. I'm trying to not get too excited about it since I don't really know yet what it means...but I'm pretty excited about it 😀

you are right Late. The language of the email is very strange... it doesn't tell anything definitive.

I propose that from now on, all LOIs should look like this

I received a similar email last year. I replied and was accepted the very next day as far as I remember.

Definitely reply to the email if you want to go to Pitt, even if you have already sent them letters of intent/interest. I sent them an update letter, a letter of interest, and a reply to that email last year.

Good luck! :luck:

Medyep, how did you answer the email? Did you do a short response basically telling them that yes, you were pretty certain you'd matriculate if offered admission, or did you do a more extended response?

I wrote a short paragraph and said that I will for sure attend Pitt if accepted. My response was short mostly because I didn't have anything new to say after already sending update and interest letters. I don't think an extended response is really necessary unless you really have a lot to say.

Thanks!!! so the response i mentioned above should work!

The e-mail that some applicants got from Pitt is a way for the school to try to improve its yield. The admissions committee doesn't want to give out a lot
of acceptances to fill the class. They are essentially screening you to see if you are still interested, and the committee is hoping that acceptances can be minimized by extending them to people who are still eager to get them.

I also received this email today. I'm thinking it is essentially an acceptance.

I'm thinking it is essentially an acceptance.

i hope so. but it seems as though a lot of people got the email, so may be we are over-analyzing....

anyways, i hope we all get in

:luck:

accepted earlier but just withdrew. hope my spot gets filled by one of you guys!

Thanks Jason. Sent my reply a little ago... I hope some of us hear good news soon!!

only one person on the waitlist at SDN did not receive this email. I presume this is just a response bias but Did anyone else on the u pitt waitlist NOT receive this email????

Yeah, it sort of gives that impression. Remember, though, that according to past emails, this year Pitt is accepting more than 1/3 of the class from the waitlist. That's more than 40 spots!

After taking that into account, you know that SDN is not representative of the applicant population at large.

I didn't either.

i didn't receive the email either. I sent in a LOI 2 weeks ago. most of the ppl who got in there aren't gonna go there anyway, so im not that worried.

I'm not worrying that I haven't gotten the email; waitlist movement probably won't really start picking up till after 5/15

I didn't receive it either and also am not too worried. It would've been great to know that I'm going to be accepted but after almost 6 months on waitlists I'm used to waiting.

Even though I'm doubtful of the use of this, I just did a quick tally of the responses since the 1st post about the email appeared. This is how it looks so far:

Waitlisted, received email:
1. Nnukibw77
2. JokerMD
3. Goodman Brown
4. D1ony5u5
5. LateToTheParty
6. Call8675309

Bobsmith seems to have received it too, but not sure...

Wailisted, didn't receive email:
1. Acacia123
2. Fastboyslim
3. Wg86
4. Wbcl989
5. Quicky

Seems roughly split in half...

I didn't get it either. I don't think we'll have to wait until 5/15 to see significant movement, but from their emails I didn't expect this to start until April. Congrats to those who got it. I'd have interpreted that as an acceptance, but apparently you're not technically accepted until they email you again after you respond.

Add me to the email not received pool 👎

Waitlisted, received email: 6

Waitlisted, didn't receive email: 6

I'm pretty sure it's an unofficial acceptance guys, so congrats! With the massive waitlist and very few outright acceptances, and then with this dancing-the-line email, it seems like Pitt has become overly concerned about improving their yield (inferiority complex, perhaps?)... dunno how that makes me feel about the school, but hey, I'll take an acceptance

They very well might be concerned with improving their yield. My first year host told me he believed Pitt was making a big push move into the top 10. He said his class seems to have had GPA / MCAT weighted in admissions more than in previous years, resulting in a much younger and more competitive / academically ready group than in previous classes (who have more non-trads). Since GPA / MCAT averages are a component in a schools US News score and ranking, focusing more on them will benefit in the rankings. Yield is also a factor, so that might be an area they're trying to improve a lot as well.

However, I'd say a more likely reason for Pitt's approach this year (they did this as well last year, just weren't as transparent about the huge waitlist) is that I've heard they over-enrolled some two years ago. They ended up offering a few students full-tuition scholarships to have them defer so the numbers worked out. While some schools with this general approach to handing out acceptances seem very conscious about about applicant interest, I suspect Pitt is just too shortly-removed from being burned by over-enrollment that they want to proceed very cautiously in subsequent cycles.

I didn't get the email either...

My latest LOI was march 8th.

For all of you who got the email, when were you waitlisted? (hopefully they're going in chronological order and more emails will go out this week). 🙂

Just officially withdrew. I hope that some deserving person gets that email very soon. Good luck.

For all of you recently accepted... what are your stats? (and maybe some extracurriculars?)

Come on, you have to know at this point that the stats of someone else who got in has no bearing on how you will do, especially post interview. Congrats to those who just got in, hope the same happens for me soon. Neither me nor a friend on the pitt waitlist recieved the pre-acceptance email, however.

But it would maybe give me some sort of idea of what they are looking for off of the waitlist (you know, calm nerves and all, try to figure out this opaque application process).

i think i remember the waitlist letter saying something about significant movement projected in april, so hopefully these recent acceptances are foreshadowing of a larger wave that has yet to come...then again, i got that letter back in november, so who knows how things have changed. still hoping for the best. best of luck to my fellow havent-received-an-email-ers. and congrats to those recently accepted

Congrats to the new acceptees! I'd imagine this is a small preview of what is to come in April. Just to let everyone interested in merit aid know, they have not awarded any scholarships yet. The very nice lady in the financial aid office let me know that she anticipated mid-April. I'd imagine quite a few of us early-acceptees will be either committing to Pitt or withdrawing after those are allocated.

accepted off waitlist too!!

i guess that email yesterday WAS a good sign

congrats everyone

Wow congrats you guys! waitlist movement has officially begun! Hopefully us non-email-receiving people will get that interesting email soon!

I have talked to a few other waitlistee's who also have not received the e-mail, in addition to myself. I expect that though it seems to be that a large portion of the SDN waistlistees got this e-mail, the reality is disproportionately less. People are much more likely to say they have got one than that they didn't. That said, I am very happy that Pitt has begun the process, and I really hope I'm in that next batch of prospects.

congrats! all of you have just been accepted: did you ALL get that "interest" email this morning? And did you respond?

congrats! all of you have just been accepted: did you ALL get that "interest" email this morning? And did you respond?

I received the email yesterday afternoon, responded this morning, and got the acceptance email this afternoon.

Yeah, received the email yesterday noon, replied last night with a short but strong letter of intent, and received the acceptance this morning by like 11am (Pacific time).

I also think that those receiving the letter were disproportionately represented in this forum. Do not dispair! At least one person who got the email withdrew, so, I'm sure there is still room.

Seriously, best of luck.
