I hand delivered my last letter of recommendation to the admissions office on Friday (9/25). I asked the lady how long it took to receive an interview invite after the secondary was complete, and she said within the week. Hope it's true.

Does anyone know when they start giving out acceptances/rejections? Anybody get any news yet?

I'm out of state and applying for the MD/PhD. Utah called me last week saying they were going to start handing out invites to interview/rejections in November.

Ug. Now they say the Ph.D. Committee will review my application when they meet in January. More waiting for me. Any MD/PhD applicants get an interview yet? In state or out of state?

Well, it's been more than two weeks now since my secondary was complete, and still no word. I just hope if they have an issue with something in my secondary they will contact me rather than mull it over.

There was an issue with mine and they weren't shy about letting me know. This was all before I had my interview though.

having trouble with my sixth letter...

FAIL

Yeah, I actually had a problem with my last letter because the professor was late in sending it in. It took them a while to finally pull it off virtual evals and get my status updated to complete, but once they did it was a matter of days before the interview was offered.

I volunteered at a hospital so can this fulfill both the volunteer service and patient exposure categories?

Also, under research it asks if your study was published. Mine were published as abstracts but it's only yes/no. should i just say no?

Double dipping is a big no-no at the U 🙁

As for the second question, you'd probably have to call the admissions office or email them to get their opinion on how you should list it.

Interview invite! My secondary was complete on 9/25, so a bit longer wait than I expected. I was given seven dates in November (had to pick my top three) and my three choices are all on the third week. Anyone else interviewing around then?

Interview invite!

One of my choices was in the third week of November, the other two were later.

Not a whole lot going on in the Utah thread . . . I am wondering your thoughts on the new curriculum, for those of you have interviewed, are currently attending, planning to interview etc. It looks like a great idea, but I'm wondering about they systems-based approach in general and how successful it will be right off the bat since they have done it so differently until now. Maybe only time will tell.

Yeah this thread is pretty slow lately, we need to liven it up! As for the new curriculum, a friend of mine is a MS1 this year and he seems to like the changes they've made. At times he's complained that it's somewhat disorganized, but I think that by next year they should have all of the major issues worked out and it should be really good. Hopefully we'll be there to find out...:xf:

I think by the time classes start in 2010 they'll have a lot of the bugs worked out. I don't really like how they have weekly tests on Mondays, so hopefully that gets changed. I also don't like the mandatory lecture attendance policy...but those are small inconveniences I'm willing to put up with to go there.

Question... did anyone else receive that email about research opportunities at the U? It was sent last week and said to contact Janet bennett if you were interested in doing research while in med school.

I received the research email too, and know several others who also received it. We were wondering if they haven't received many MD/PhD applications this year and they're trying to create a larger applicant pool. Or maybe this is something they always send to interviewing applicants simply to make us aware of the opportunities available.

Yeah it is peculiar. I contacted that lady and she was really nice but the research opportunities were mostly dealing with MS1 students during the summer as well as letting you know about the MDPhD option. I guess I just like looking into things too much. I wish the U would get back to those that interview early... non-rolling admissions is good if you apply late but maddening for those that applied early and interviewed early.

I guess its worth the wait though.

You can say that again. I've heard of very few people from last year's cycle who heard anything before January, and most didn't hear anything until March.

The MS1s from this year said they were trying to get admin to change the weekly quizzes from Monday to Friday; so hopefully that'll happen ( & I'm there to see it). From the students I talked to, they also aid they liked the new curriculum (not that they had anything to compare too). I really underestimated the med school. New buildings, nice faculty, and a seemingly decent curriculum. They're on my top 5 list.

I hope this happens too. It sure would make weekends more enjoyable. Hopefully admin will respond positively to the current MS1s' feedback.

By quizzes do you mean Monday exams? I heard quizzes aren't graded heavily...

I'm sure that bling was referring to the Monday exams, not quizzes. Do they even have quizzes? I've only heard of the weekly exams on Mondays. On another note, has anyone heard of anyone receiving an acceptance yet? When I interviewed they told us that they would likely start accepting in late October or early November.

When I interviewed last week they said that most people would be accepted in late March, but that there was a chance that you could be accepted earlier. The admissions lady said that so far, they have accepted 6 people.

I wonder who those lucky 6 are and what they did to get in this early?

Anybody complete on the 15th of October or later and have an interview?

I was completed just days before you and I am interviewing later this month. I'm not sure how they are awarding interviews but I do know that there were many people who applied before me who had just barely received interviews recently. You'll probably get the invite very soon. You interned for President Young, so I'm pretty sure I ran into you many times. Jane at the clinic pointed you out and I believe you are friends with Katie. Good luck to you! :luck:

Is that picture/avatar of you?

Perhaps... I should make my MdApps less specific--ha!

No one has posted interview feedback for Utah this admissions cycle. Please do!

Yes, i was talking about Monday Exams...my apologies for the confusion; and yes, the quizzes are not graded heavily (per MS1s).

Yes they do quizzes now, mainly to get people to stay on top of things. I know right now they are doing anatomy quizzes each week

I'm an MS1 and we have monday exams (35-40 questions) and weekly histology quizzes. We have what's called anatomy table conference about once every three weeks which is like a quiz. Most of us love the monday morning exams so I don't think there is much of a chance for those to be changed to friday.

This thread has fallen off the map. Anyone been accepted yet?

They said at my interview last week that they have accepted "less than 6 people" so far. I guess they really keep it top secret until March.

Not to start a rumor or anything, but is it possible that the cap size might be returning to 102 next year? Samuelson has said they have to get an extra 10 million in funding each year in order for that to happen. BUT, I heard someone else on the admissions board recently say that "it's all up to the dean" and that "they simply can't keep it at 82." I don't know which dean he was referring to (Betz, Bjorkman or Samuelson) but it gives me some hope (maybe false hope). Anyone else heard anything?

The U only has one financial source left and that is from the state. Unless they raise taxes, there is no way they will get funding. Here's hoping for a good legislative session in the spring.

A friend of mine works for the medical school and has been told to "prepare for 120 students" for the next incoming class. I don't know if this will happen, but that's what I hear. I'm still curious why the 20 spots were cut across the board; since it is a state funded school I would have thought any cuts would come from the OOS spots. No one asked me though 🙂

By the next incoming class, is that the class that would start in Aug 2010 (us interviewing now) or the class after that?

Please let it be us!

Yes 2010; perhaps to make up for the short class this year. 👍

Does anyone know the deadline for getting one's AMCAS app (and secondary if offered) into Utah? I was just turned on to U Utah by a Salt Lake City friend and would love to apply if not too late. It was hard to find any sort of dates/deadlines on the website...

AMCAS needed to be submitted by 1 Nov for Utah.

AMCAS needed to be submitted by 1 Nov for Utah.

Their website states:
Applications must be submitted to AMCAS between June 1 and November 1 at 12:00 Midnight, Eastern Standard Time.

I read this as "you must have your AMCAS application complete by November 1", but it is hard to tell when the deadline is for the app to go from AMCAS-->Utah.

Your best bet is to simply call the admissions office and ask if you haven't already. My guess, with it being december, is that you're too late, but I might be wrong.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I've been talking to a few more people about the class size reduction issue and the 10 million figure is making less and less sense. When you do the math, that's saying that they need $125,000 of funding per student, per year in order to increase it back up to 102. They already have the infrastructure in place, why is it so costly to have a few more occupied seats in the lecture hall? The answer, it seems, was that the reduction was merely put in place as posturing to get more funding from the state, which didn't end up happening, and probably won't happen in the near future. So, if you're heart is set on Utah and you haven't received an acceptance letter already, your best bet right now is to lobby the dean to increase the class size. Thoughts?
