ericL is a medical student at UW, and because of his personal experiences there, he knows what he's talking about. You haven't. Wait until you get in, go there, and then come back and share your thoughts with us. At the same time, please don't criticize others' personal experiences and opinions. After all, everyone has different opinions. ericL may come from a very diverse city; therefore, he thinks that the town of UW isn't as diverse as his hometown. Someone who comes from a rural country may probably find the town diverse. We all are different. But, please be respectful to the others.

Yes, I have. In fact, I've been a faculty member at UW longer than ericL has been a medical student. I am also happy to be respectful to others, and do understand that not everyone views Madison the way I do. However, I did not believe his response was respectful, thus my reply. Take care.

Whatever, nobody really cares if you're a faculty member-in fact asserting your position really makes you look like more of an ass than you are. Either way it doesn't fix the fact that Madison is a pseudo-city and everyone I have talked to that has moved here from a really metro area has voiced the same complaints. My experience is that people love it here if they either grew up here or moved here from a more rural area.

Oh, and I came here for the school not the ****ty city d-bag. The school is incredible-it was my first choice the whole time and I do not for one second regret my decision to matriculate here, just realize that you will NOT be in anything close to an urban environment here. The fact is Madison is nothing but a really big small town that while lacking in things like culture, has many other benefits-it is one of the cleanest cities I have been too, the people are nice, it is VERY safe, very cheap cost of living, schools are good, yadda yadda yadda....

Seriously, if given the chance to visit the school... DO IT. I guarantee that any miss-givings about the "city" will be far outweighed by the quality of the school (easily the greatest facilities I visited), the top-notch faculty (Medical school faculty that is), opportunities you will never have at another school, and world class clinical opportunities.

I'd have to sort of disagree with this in some ways. As someone coming from a much larger metro area (greater LA) I generally think Madison certainly doesn't offer as much variety in nightlife compared to a lot of larger cities (mostly just venues with dancing, there are actually a lot of really nice atmospheric bars, mostly near the capitol, the state street/campus scene is pretty played out.)

As far as food goes, though, the selection is pretty stellar. Madison actually has the highest number of bars/restaurants per capita of any city of 200k or more in the US (although admitted a huge percentage of that total is from bars). That said, there are a good amount of ethnic restaurants that range from excellent to mediocre (their selection of Chinese restaurants, specifically, is pretty dismal) but its selection of mainstreamish restaurants is pretty great. Fresca, the Icon, Restaurant Magnus are all nice upscale/higher end restaurants that compare well to nicer restaurants in bigger cities but with relatively lower cost, and the steakhouse selection is on par with any major city (and IMO is far superior to LA) If you're going to compare the nightlife/culture/restaurant scene to Chicago or New York, etc, then of course it won't be on par, but even compared to relatively larger similar cities such as Milwaukee, Cleveland, etc, it more than holds it's own IMO.

hmm...that's a good question. You can definitely fly into dane county which is a very nice but very small airport in madison. It tends to be more expensive and not as many flights from across the country go to the dane airport, but it's more convenient and going through security is very easy. I prefer to go through milwaukee and just drive because the flights to madison are often much more expensive and it ends up being cheaper that way, along with milwaukee being a more central hub for flights coming from across the country. it's kind of up to you, dane is more convenient but also more expensive and you may have to have several connections (usually one in milwaukee) anyway. good luck!

If you want to fly into milwaukee to save money, there is also the badger bus that you can take to get to madison. I am pretty sure there are multiple buses every day. It picks up at the airport and drops off at the union on campus. When i took it 3 years ago i think a round trip ticket was 30ish? There are only like two stops on the way and they are short. There are also shuttles from the madison airport to the union. Not sure how much those cost but I know many students use them. When is your interview date?!?!?!

going on 11/6. so i can fly into milwaukee just as easy? This is so confusing lol...how far away is milwaukee from madison? Id hopefully be staying with a student host too...would being at mulwaukee airport make things inconvienant? Ive never been in the area lol sorry if i sound so lost.

Here is the link to the badger busses. It will cost $40 round trip. It will take about 2 hours of bus time plus waiting for the bus. Busses leave every couple hours. Personally I would take the plane to Madison but I am lazy. Maybe check into it and see what will take longer/cost more. The busses are nice from what I remember. I don't think this will matter to your host since you will get to madison when you get to madison. Good luck! BTW it costs a little more to book when you get there. I think I would wait and do that. You never know what could happen to your flight (delays and what not) we may have snow by then! 😀 Remember your winter coat!!!

milwaukee is about 75 miles east of madison, and the badger bus is actually a good idea buffy, I completely forgot about it. since most flights to madison make a stop at milwaukee first, it tends to be easier to take the 1 1/2 hour ride to madison and save money on the flight vs. waiting for a connecting flight to madison and paying a lot more. the badger bus brings you right to the UW campus so there wouldn't be any inconvenience for your student host if you chose that route since they can either pick you up or you can travel to their place pretty easily. the only incovenience is of course the 1 1/2 hour ride from the milwaukee airport to madison, but you may end up waiting an hour and a half for your connecting flight to madison anyway so flight times may be a large factor as to which one you might choose.

this may be a stupid question...but its not like u can wear a winter coat over your suit...so i guess just man up and get frostbite? lol:laugh:

They will have places to hang your coat. If you park in the garage though you will only be exposed to the elements for a few minutes so you may not need a coat. It will be cold while your car warms up though.
For people who interview in January or February, coats may be more of a must even for short excursions.

Glad I am a girl. I have an awesome trench to wear over my suit if it is cold!
 
it shouldn't be that bad in november, maybe 40 or whatever. You can wear an overcoat over a suit. I would definitely just fly into madison, flying into milwaukee isn't that much cheaper and is a big waste of time. You might get a lot cheaper flight by flying into Ohare but that's just all kinds of inconvenient.
 
Ya, definitely fly in here if you can. Especially if you are unfamiliar with the area its always easier and worth the extra money.

I know Delta/NWA, United, American, and Midwest all fly in directly or via their regional services.

Oh and yes, you can totally wear a winter coat over a suit, it doesn't look chic but it certainly keeps ya warm!
 
interview invite for 11/20/09, really excited. Heard some great things about this school.

worst night ever.

got home and found the rejection letter from the only place i wanted to go. my parents didn't have the heart to tell me, so it sat on my desk for a couple of days.

OOS, UW undergrad, 3.7 36Q, a set of letters specifically for madison too....i would bleed for the badgers.

not even an interview 🙁

haha i wish i could but its one of the few weekends i have off at work so it actually fits perfectly for me.

Seriously though I wouldn't be scared. you could even stay. It has gotten a lot less scary in the past few years. Now you have to pay $5 to get on state street so a lot of the rioting has gone away. no more burning cars, and I am pretty sure there was no tear gas last year. There are still cops on horses though. Don't touch the horses!!! It is just awesome to see so many people in costume. My friend dressed up as Luke Skywalker and we found a Princess Leia. My other friend was a mustard and he found a ketchup. Oh the photo opportunities!!! 😀

Does anyone know how long it's averaging between when your application undergoes preliminary review by the committee and when you hear whether or not you will interviewed?

If you aren't selected to be interviewed right away, are you notified about being put on hold?

I'm starting to freak myself out and would love some advice from someone more knowledgeable (or at least calmer) than myself...
 
Rejection letter in the mail today. Not a big surprise. Complete 8/3, OOS.

Does anyone know if it would be a good idea to stay with the current students at UofW rather than at a hotel?
 
Definitely stay with a med student. I interviewed 10/9, and they were super helpful! The interview day was real relaxing...don't sweat it!

It's your chance to ask last minute questions and get an insight into the school...which is awesome because the school is amazing, as well as the people. You'll be impressed!

Bad thing- No tour of the children's hospital...h1n1 precautions...

Madison is getting more selective every year. I know 4.0/31 people from in state that have gotten rejections.

That being said, I am holding onto the glimmer of hope for this school. No rejection yet :xf:. Its sad how to thats the "best news" i have from any school. No rejection. Oh well, i'll take what I can get.🙂
 
Got an email today that said interview feedback. I was so excited! Unfortunately it was just a survey from UW asking how the day was 🙁
 
got an interview from the med school this morning, and the mstp office says they may take another 4 weeks to decide if i get an interview.

My application was complete on 10/5 and had an interview offer on 10/14 for 11/13.

I think this is kinda fast from what I've been hearing on campus and seeing on this thread. It is worth of noting that my secondary was sitting there since 8/14 (I was waiting on one LOR). It's also probably helpful that I'm an IS applicant that goes to the UW for undergrad and no one in my family has ever gone to college (all of which probably expediated the response I received).

Best of luck and hopefully you'll hear from them soon.

Thanks for the advice. I got an invite last week, so I'm much calmer now! In fact, it came about two hours after I made that post, so I think the SDN gods are watching out for me after all... 😛

Do you know how quickly acceptances/rejections usually come after an interview? (If it isn't apparent already, I'm not very good at waiting.) At this point I think I'm more nervous about waiting for a decision after I interview, than the interview itself! 😳

told us last week to expect a decision by snail mail in 4-6 weeks. Might become longer as the season wears on.

Any other details or advice about what to expect on interview day you have to share?

4-6 weeks after for me will be right before the holidays, meaning this year I could end up with either the best or the worst present ever! 😱

I'm OOS, 3.5 GPA for science and overall, 30 MCAT.

Application complete on July 23.
Invitation Invite on October 15.
Interview in mid-November.

Thanks! Georgetown rejected me yesterday post-interview... I do not think Tulane went much better. I have a hard time being genuine when I really want to stay in the Midwest (aka Wisconsin).
 
Was anyone else thrown off by how they mention interview attire?

"We suggest business attire and we encourage you to wear comfortable shoes."

I would love to wear my crocs to the interview 😀😛

I still have to get my suit:scared:
