Wow, snail mail rejection here. Frankly, I'm more than a little surprised... I don't have any obvious gaps in my application, and since they interview a quarter of their applicants, I figured I would at least get one.

I really wish I knew what they didn't like...

good luck to everyone else though!

dang, I am sorry man 🙁

Now I'm not eagerly looking forward to the mail anymore....I don't want a heartbreak.

Yeah, me too. But I want to know so that I can figure out if I have to make adjustments to my schedule for Vandy. I haven't taken any English in college, I tested out of everything. It would be nice to know if should bother trying to take any or not. I don't like most English classes...

Same here, dated 08/12. First rejection of the year. Was my first rejection last year too. I guess I should not have reapplied?

So.....since I haven't taken any English as an undergrad, and already graduated, should I not expect anything from Vanderbilt? That kinda sucks...

I think these requirements are generally fairly loose. Many schools (except NYU *bitterness*) will let you replace "english" with writing heavy humanities classes.

Letter of rec question:

So on the Vanderbilt website, it says you need letters from two SENIOR faculty members who have taught you.

But, on the secondary it just says 2 from science professors.

So, I have two letters from professors, and one from a teaching associate professor. I feel the letter from the teaching associate professor may be stronger and I originally wanted to include it as one of the 3 to specify on the application.

Should I just list the two professors, and send in the letter from the teaching associate professor but not specify it on the application? This lousy terminology has got my head spinnin'!

Secondary/Interview invite today!!!! This was my ultimate reach.

This is the only thing I'm worried about because I haven't taken any yet, since I tested out of it. I have 1 year left, and if they want the prereqs done by December, eeek... I mean, I don't want to totally rearrange my schedule for a school that might not even accept me.

I would suggest giving Vandy a call.

Congrats!!! Were you in the 7/14 email or 8/4 email group??

For those of you who got rejections I'm sorry . . . more likely than not I will soon have one too. 🙁 were any of you from 8/4 or all 7/14 as well? my fall schedule is going to depend on Vandy, so it would make my life so much easier to hear within the next week, whether it's good or bad.

I was 7/14. with so few people posting rejections, it's making me feel A LOT worse..

I was in the 7/14 email. My fall schedule kind of depends on it, I just need to figure out when they want the prereqs by.

it just means you have the balls to admit it . . . good for you. i am sure PLENTY of people have gotten them. if i do, i will post it too. I mean, eventually we will all have a bunch of rejections. might as well get used to it now. this is why i try not to predict where i will and won't get interviews/acceptances . . . it's impossible to be sure. otherwise people wouldn't apply to so many schools.

they seem pretty serious about having them done by the end of fall. still, if your circumstances really prevent it, it cant hurt to explain the situation.

Congrats!

I am in the 7/14 batch too. I really hope I get my mail today so I finally know what my status is. :scared:

does vanderbilt ever make exceptions about their course requirements?

do they allow people to take some of them in the spring of their final year? the website says all requirements must be done by the fall of the year before medical school, but does anyone know if they let that slide sometimes?

I'm pretty sure they don't let it slide. I talked in person with the head of admissions about the requirements. She said that they do let you swap the English/Writing requirements with History, Philosophy, Ethics, and classes like that.

whoa! all these rejections are scaring me. Im still at work and havent gotten my mail yet :scared:. My heart goes out to you guys.

interview invite...i just had a great workout after finding that out

i cant find my password sheet. is there a pattern to it so i can just figure it out?

yay! rejected, no more secondaries to fill out! though I really wish they could have done this via email like everyone else. seems a bit pretentious the way they do it, but maybe i'm just bitter 🙂

Has anyone from the 8/4 batch heard anything? Rejection/invite?

wow aycarumba, interview from duke and mayo but not vandy? what a weird process this is.

anyone have any more insight on their course requirements?

You can say that again lol. I wonder how it will all pan out...

Rejected. 7/14 email batch and mailed out 8/14. I must part of me is disappointed because vandy is one of the schools I really liked. Either way this saves me one more secondary and the course hassle.

Good Luck to the rest still in the process!

just got the snail mail rejection letter today. "app received" e-mail was received on 7/14, to give a timeframe.

sub 3.4 GPAs, sub 35 MCAT so this was a longshot anyways!

🙁

At least you have that Yale interview to cheer things up 🙂

Rejected today as well. Good luck to those still standing!

Beleted...delteted... Del Taco... What was that word?

Rejected.

I got rejected today. Between this and UCSF, I'm pretty sure I'm not getting in anywhere. I was kinda hoping that a 36 on the MCAT would mean something, but apparently I can't even get past a screen.

O'cmon dont let this get you down. A lot of us got rejected today and you have one invite and many more to go. I think they got a whole bunch of good apps this year which is y good applicants like you did not cross the screen. Keep your head high, we got a long time to go.

Well, it had to happen sometime...

Rejected.

Oh well.

Guess that's a little less money and time to spend.

:luck: everybody!

Hey guys!

Man, crappy day today I guess. This is my official cheer-up post.

To those of you coming here: congrats! I've seen a few interviewees around and it's sort of a surreal experience. Come to our lectures! And if a particularly annoying, chatty, chipper first year comes to talk to you, you can assume it's me 😉. Oh and thanks to the SDNer that told me he applied because of me at his interview! I was totally honored.

Now, to those of you who have gotten bad news:

first of all, I'm sorry. While people who are not in this process can't understand why it really sucks to receive a rejection (especially your first one), I do. You get so psyched about applying, and hear so many great things about a school, and imagine yourself there, and then they just go and stomp on your heart (although hey, look at it this way, at least Vandy didn't take your money first!). Unfortunately, for 99% of us, that's part of the process. And to be honest, looking back, it's sort of the most important part. A lot of the people who apply to and expect to get into schools of the Vandy caliber are the same people who haven't gotten a B since the fifth grade and who can't fathom a world in which they don't get something they have worked for. There's nothing wrong with that, if you put in the work, you should get the results. However, things dont always work out that way. It's not personal. It really DOESN'T mean that they don't think you'll be a great doctor. They just don't see you in their particular school, for whatever reason.

And what you really have to think about, then, is that if they don't think you belong at that particular school, it means you don't. Period. Forget all the thoughts you had of yourself wearing the school colors, and all the stuff you've heard from people that made you think it'd be the bestest school ever for you. The admission people know who they're looking for, and if you're not it, it means you wouldn't belong with the other people they're picking as well. I promise you this is the case. Admission people aren't sadistic psychopaths trying to make everyone suffer, nor are they trying to create a totally homogeneous class. They are trying to create a sort of amalgamate that has to be just right, and if you don't fit, it doesn't mean you're stupid.

So, buck up. Those of you with a few interviews already: count your blessings and SERIOUSLY, quit whining. There are people out there with no interviews at all who'd die to be in the position of having received their first rejection (from vandy of all places) after a few interviews. Those of you who don't have interviews yet: it's SO early. So very very early. There is still tons of time for you to hear back from tons of schools. Breathe. This is a marathon. Do what you have to do, present yourself as well as you possibly can, and when you get your first interview, have a good attitude, smile, and be nice. Don't fall for schools you haven't interviewed at, it's just pointless. Enjoy the fact that you're THIS close to doing what you've always wanted to do while lots of people haven't even made it this far.

Good luck to all!

hey LET,

any suggestions on what to do the night before?

Sleep?

Honestly, that's the best thing you can do. If you can find a student (if you're being hosted by one or something, otherwise I can help) to talk to about the school, pros and cons, stuff to add to your canned "why am I great for vandy" answer, great. Getting to know a couple of students is also nice cause it helps you remember the school better after you leave (I didn't stay with or hang out with any students for Vandy, and by the time second look came about, I'd forgotten whether I even liked it). Otherwise, hang your suit, double check how to get to the admission building, set your alarm and go to bed early. If you have time the day before, check out the campus on your own (or with a student) a bit, that way you'll have more questions to ask of the students the next day, and a better idea of where to go. Definitely have questions planned for your interviewer. I think that's it!

I totally feel you man. It's like schools stopped caring about the MCAT. Although in your MDapps I notice you had some legal / academic stuff going on...maybe that is why? I know it's very minor but...

Personally, I think there's a lot to be said about whining about this process in general. Just like health-care, the entire process of getting into medical school is broken.

Rejected here as well.

I guess this process can be pretty unpredictable.
