Got mine today too but I submitted mine around end of March so I think they just started mailing those out.

When do people move in to start the year? can't seem to find an academic calendar.

Has anyone been rejected post-interview?

Meaning, does Dartmouth reject post-interview, and if so, have they already started sending out those rejections?

I think they do reject post-interview, but I don't know if they've sent out any rejections yet.

Still no news. Starting to get nervous it means a post-interview rejection.

I called the admissions office today - apparently they sent me a wait list email in March but I never received it.

More importantly they told me all decisions have been sent out, so if you haven't heard anything yet you should call them.

Thanks for the info.

I guess I'm calling tomorrow morning... Hopefully it's not bad news, but at this point...

Same here. I called and they forwarded me the waitlist email that they sent at the end of March that I never received.

Since all decisions have been sent out, is there any more word on post-interview rejections? If not, should we assume that there are over 100 people on the wait list?

Yes, I think there are over 100 people on the waiting list. When I called to ask about the WL, I got the impression that it could be around 200+ people before people start telling them that they don't want to be on it anymore. I'm not sure what that number comes down to once they eliminate people who don't want to stay on the WL.

For those of you who drive in Hanover, NH, is it difficult to drive here during the winter (especially when it snows and gets dark early during the winter)? Will adjusting be difficult here if you have never driven before?

You'll be fine. I hadn't really driven in the snow before here. Just get a good front wheel drive or all wheel drive car with good tires (I have winter tires during the winter on my 99 Honda Accord and my wife just uses all-season tires on her 04 Civic). They actually sent out a winter driving manual during the fall but it's pretty common sense.

does anyone have a link for DMS's academic calendar? or know when classes start, orientation, etc for fall of 2011? thanks!

Orientation starts on August 8th and classes on August 15th.

I wont be able to make it but I would love to hear how it goes, if you don't mind sharing 🙂

I'll be sure to fill you in when I get back.

I'm also going to be looking at apartments while I am there as well so if there are any current Dartmouth students out there that can offer up some advice on where to look that would be greatly appreciated. I've been looking around on the Dartmouth Real Estate Office website but everything is just so unorganized and the pictures are terrible. I also tried sites like apartments.com but apparently those sites don't see too much action for this area.

I too would love to hear how second look day goes! I'm waiting on the wait list...

I met several people at another second look day who were also accepted or wait-listed at Dartmouth, so I'm hoping once everybody narrows their choices on May 15th quite a few spots open up here!

Definitely ask around with students while you are here--there are always lots of openings in current students places/they may have ideas about the best rentals available in the area. (Also the class facebook page often gets ads posted to it).

For those who went to the second look weekend, any sense of how many spots in the class may be filled already?

I just came back from second-look (spent also Sunday there looking for housing). Am tired but very very excited now. For those who missed the second-look, I will try to fill you in later today. It is a truly awesome second-look, probably the best one I could ever imagine. We enjoyed talks from the president to the first-year student, and there's no doubt in my mind that "you'd be crazy to go anywhere else" other than DMS.

As to how many spots filled, my hunch is not many -- only 50-60 students showed up -- but I may be wrong because probably many students who will attend for sure want to save money from traveling. But I bet that >90% of those attended second-look will matriculate 😍

I agree that the weekend left a very good impression. Great students, great professors and great opportunities to do pretty much anything you could hope to do in your 4 years at Dartmouth.

However, I would wager that only ~60% of the atendees will definitely matriculate. They actually asked for a show of hands for those who were certainly matriculating on Friday morning, and there were about 20 who didn't raise their hands and were still on the fence.

Also on the interview day, they said the end up accepting ~3x the size of the class before it is officially filled in the summer. There is still plenty of hope for all of you waitlisters!

Was there any mention of what percent of accepted students decided to attend second look? This would be really helpful to get a ballpark estimate of how much waitlist movement we (those of us still crossing our fingers 🙂 ) can anticipate.

I was hoping that a current student could tell me the actual cost-of-attendance at Dartmouth. I recall the guy who was in charge of financial aid saying that it was $64000 at the talk on interview day, however the website says $55000. $9000 difference, but that can add up when multiplied by four! And honestly, $10000 for living expenses seems like a really, really low estimate to me...

Tuition at DMS next year is $47,780. There are an extra $1200 in fees, which brings you to $49,000. The budget is for 10 months (not 12) because you get two months off between years 1 and 2. If you're still on someone else's (parent's) insurance then it's not unreasonable to assume $12,000-$15,000 for first year, especially if you're smart about housing. That brings you to $61,000-$64,000. Some of the things they put into the budget are ridiculous: you definitely do not need $2000 for books because you really don't need to buy more than a few books.

It's expensive. I'm glad you're thinking about cost because not enough people do.

Physicsnerd,

Is north park within walking distance to the medical school?

I applied for the graduate housing at North Park, and I'd like to not buy a car, so I'm wondering if it's close enough.

Thanks

Yes it is. You can roll out of bed 5 minutes before lecture and get there in time.

You will at some point need to get a car, though.

I figured, but I'm hoping to get by without one for the first year.

Just got in off the Waitlist!!!!!!!!!!! SOoo excited don't know what to do with myself right now🙂

Got a call from Andy Welch today and i think my heart skipped a beat.

Interviewed back in october, it was a painfully long wait but so worth it now!

good luck to everyone still waiting to hear too!

Congrats! Will you be here in the fall?

I have some random questions I didn't see on the thread.

Any comments on the resources available for students? Are lectures recorded (audio/audio or just audio). Are prof always opening their office hours and/or get back to you via email quickly? Did the first part of the 1st year seem overwhelming since you had to deal with anatomy at the beginning of the year (another school I have an acceptance at starts that class later in the year to help ease things for students).

Will the P/F system for sure be introduced into the 2nd year, seeing as its H/P/F now? How much actual "free time" do 2nd years get to study for the boards?

Can't think of more now, but thanks in advance!

I'll add to this.

For MD only candidates, is it easy to get involved with relevant research projects?

Is attendance mandatory?

Thanks!

Next year lectures will be audio synched to powerpoint slides. Profs get back to you quickly. Everyone learns to adapt to the volume of material.

I heard that P/F will be coming to the second year (almost certainly).

You get enough time to study (I took 2 weeks and it was more than enough).

If you want to get involved with research it's easy. Right now, anyone who wants to do research at DMS over the summer gets a couple of thousand dollars from DMS to do so.

One more question, I'm looking at a competitive residency and so I do worry about Step 1 scores, did your class and other classes as a whole do above average on that? Do you know the numbers?

Also, first year is p/f, correct?
Thanks, you're very helpful.

First year is P/F. The averages are typically in the low-mid 230s.

Honestly, Step 1 score is more on you than the school. I feel like they prepped us well but I still needed to study. At every med school there will be someone who gets in the 250s and someone who fails.

Physicsnerd addressed most of the below questions--but I wanted to emphasize how great the anatomy department is at DMS--definitely one of the best aspects of the 1st year--the teachers are incredibly strong, they have the lab organized so there is help available whenever you need it, and there are even great 2nd year reviews to help prep for quizzes. I can't stress enough how well this is done at DMS. I think it is a huge strength for DMS that the anatomy course is stretched out over so much of the first year--I think it helps you really be able to think about the anatomy instead of it being pointless memorization crammed in a short time frame.

The profs are super available---I was even able to go through an entire anatomy lab 1:1 with a prof on an area of the body that I found particularly confusing.

Also to link in to your research question--we had lots of visitors to the lab itself--surgeons, ENTs, etc--and I know many students created relationships with those visitors to end up doing research with them.

Also to address the question re: board studying--everyone gets about 4.5 weeks off to study for boards/take vacation, etc... and you have the opportunity to add another 7 weeks if you feel you need it (depending on if you choose to do an elective block first or head right into clinical rotations). Like so many things at Dartmouth--it is set up to suit your needs as an individual.

I know you mentioned it took you two weeks to study, if we needed more time, is it possible to have that extra time, or does the curriculum not allow for that?

Ruraldr answered it, nevermind.

See ruraldr's post above. It's far too early for you to worry about how much time you need to study for Step I. Honestly, most people think they need longer than they actually do and people who take it after more studying don't necessarily do better than those (like me) who take it early. You can take more time but I almost always think it's a mistake to do so.

hi! i just found out last week that i was accepted off the waitlist at DMS! i'm trying to make a decision, and since international health is something i'm interested in pursuing, i was wondering if anyone knew whether or not there were int'l opportunities that DMS students can pursue (thru the school, not outside orgs) before their 3rd/4th yrs? for ex, spring break or summer programs?

thanks for the help!

I just spent 3 weeks at an eye hospital in India (thanks to Dartmouth and NIH funding).

There are internal programs between years 1 and 2 and some people do international rotations in fourth year (the DarDar program, etc) and a few do it in third year during family medicine.

Got in off the waitlist today, so excited! Andy Welch called me around 12:50, pretty sure I was stuttering for the entire conversation. Good luck to everyone else waiting for a decision!
