I have only gotten the 1 page acceptance letter (actually, I got two of those- my first name was spelled with a typo on the first one, so they sent me a second one with the correct spelling). I was hoping for more info to read through!! Let me know what they say when you call- I've been worrying about the same thing.

Yeah, they will probably think I'm especially nuts when I ask them about the usual exam schedule for first year. One of my best friends just got engaged, and since I'm her matron of honor she is planning the wedding around my med school exam schedule.

I interviewed in the last week of September, but the review has not been completed. I called and was told that I would know in December.
Any one in the same situation?

pretty much, im admissions committee scheduled since 10/6

hopefully we'll hear back by december.

The wait is excruciating. I have had one more interview offer so far, other than FIU

I think I'm just going to go to the first place that accepts me.

I got the same date as well. Which other school you got an interview invite? I am waiting on FSU, USF and UM.

"Accepted" today but put on alternate list. They must have filled their first 80 acceptance spots =/

New York Medical College, no other schools- so far though I've been rejected from Boston University, Georgetown, and Tulane.

I just found out I got "accepted" into FIU but im on the wait list. The guy above me is probably right they probably filled their first eighty spots.

I was also "accepted" today.

I have been put on the alternate/waitlist at 3/4 schools I've interviewed at 🙁

So I'm confused. I finally got my decision email after forever, and it says I'm "accepted" but on the alternate/wait list so I don't quite understand how I can be both of these things at once. They probably said this at the interview, but my interview was so long ago at this point that I don't even remember anymore. Any clarification would be much appreciated! 🙂

They explained this system at the interview. I also explained it in detail on an earlier page if you'd like to read more in depth. It is basically a high, ranked waitlist. The committee has accepted you, but 80 spots are already being held by others. As the seats are given up then the "accepted" are offered a spot. This is in contrast to being "final pooled" which means your file must go before the review board in Feb. Being on this high list this early is very promising.

Yea. Very few schools have this and the reason is that any school that doesn't yet have all 4 years can only accept 10% in excess of the class size (so that would be 87 this year). Once they get that number they cannot accept anyone at all until someone who has already paid a deposit withdraws. The typical school accepts 2.5-3 applicants per seat, so they will definitely put more people on the "waitlist" than they will accept initially.

yea dont worry guys, the alternative list moves fast in FIU. If you really want to go to FIU and are alt listed, you should have a very very very good chance of getting in, especially this early in the cycle.

congratulations!!! did they call you or got an e-mail. BTW my friend got accepted in March for 2009-10 cycle, so I don't think all spots are taken. Its way too early for that. I just checked my status changed to review completed.

so i did my research. the accepted alternate list is practically an acceptance. I got an email. So, hopefully I'll get a guaranteed seat, FIU is my top choice, I want to go home. But until that guaranteed seat comes in, I'll go to interviews and wait around to hear back from more schools.

Hey guys!! Just got accepted!! woohoo🙂🙂

I was wondering if any of you know whats the deal with FIUs accreditation?
I am wary because my premed advisor told me things aren't going so smoothly at FIU. My friend is also at the FIU MPH program (which is an already established program unlike MD) and it looks like they are losing their accreditation as well!! ahhh😕😕

I myself just turned down an acceptance to FIU this week after getting accepted at UCF 😀.
I was also very nervous about all the financial problems that FIU has been having. I am from Miami area and altho im a UM grad all my HS friends go to FIU and have warned of all the problems they're having 😱
I hadnt heard about the MPH closing but I do know of about 7 other programs that have so I am not surprised!! I mean honestly Id rather go DO than risking going to a school that wont be accredited. 👎

🙁 Yeah I just spoke to my friend and she confirmed the MPH program is losing accreditation. Apparently all the students either have to graduate asap or transfer schools!! thats scary!! I dunno what that says about the med school but its no bueno :/

Great, and all this news right after I withdraw my apps from other schools. Oh well. Time to cross my fingers and hope for the best.
I wouldn't worry about it. They might have a steep sticker price, but that's about it really.

Yeah, after reading the past few posts I got worried and did a little research, but I found nothing to worry about.

The med school is one of the (if not THE) most well funded schools at FIU, and I could find nothing on past accreditation issues for the school as a whole. I did find that a lot of programs shut down over the past couple years, but it was due to budget cuts from the state (across all schools), and it was nothing out of the ordinary when looking from one florida school to another.

I remain happy with my decision and thrilled to have a spot. 👍

I hope you did your homework because UCF and FIU were started on the same day! Both got provisional accrediation at the same time and both are undergoing preliminary accreditation next year. There is absolutely no problem with FIU med school and money - in fact the money is GUARANTEED and already in ESCROW. FIU as a university got a new Presidnet after 20 years and he did some re-organizing- programs with very few students were consolidated or merged into other programs. That had NOTHING to do with the med school. THe MPH program is not loosing its accreditation - it was placed on probation because it had too many students - so simply they are not accepting any new students until they either graduate more students or hire more faculty. You need to be very careful of what you read here - FIU is doing so well that it has surprised the med community - they already surpassed the applications for last year and still have until January 1 before they close applications. There Neighborhood Help program is now nationally recognized - they have 9 affiliated institutions and more coming along in future months. FIU is here to stay and prosper. If you have questions call the office so you can be well informed.👍😀

+1

FIU received $10 million gift a yr before classes started (source - http://medicine.fiu.edu/about.php?ss=history). Add to this the gov. aid money its receiving and you have nothing to worry about

You forgot to mention the deans at FIU which were deans at nationally renown schools - an example is Dean Markham who was an administrator in Johns Hopkins (go blue jays!! 😀 ) and other top tier schools (source - http://medicine.fiu.edu/faculty_staff.php?ss=dir&show=markham). Its actually one of the reasons why Im so excited to get started at FIU, i get a bit of the alma mater in miami 🙂

I think so. You don't know how high you'd end up on the list. They could love you and stick you at the top. 🙂 Also, it depends a lot on your answer to the question: Do you have an acceptance anywhere else already?

If no, taking interviews anywhere you get them is the smart thing to do.

If yes, then would you rather go to FIU? If not, cancel the interview. If FIU is higher on the list, interview. 👍

if FIU is one of your top choices then yes. Even though they gave out a lot of acceptances, theres a lot of turn over and they often end up digging deep into their alternate list.

Miami is a beautiful city as well 😎

An update for those who have already been accepted:

I spoke with FIU COM the other day, and I was informed we will be mailed more information a week or 2 after Thanksgiving. As of now you should only have the acceptance letter, and of course you should make sure to hold your seat with the deposit. Otherwise, sit back, relax, and enjoy the holidays. 👍

Thanks for passing along this info! Great to know!

I was waitlisted a week ago today....and oficially ACCEPTED today 🙂

I'm so excited!! And hopefully this is good news to those waiting. There is still hope!

Good luck everyone :xf::xf:

Interview Invite! Unfortunately the only dates available are 12/10 and 12/13. I have another interview on the 10th and a final on the 13th.

I guess I'll e-mail them and hopefully get a different day if I can't take the final at another time.

Hey congratulations! I have a quick questions for you. . .
when was your secondary completed?
Mine has been completed for over a month and I have yet to hear back about an interview, and am getting worried.

Hey all,
I am an M1 student at FIU, so if you have any questions please feel free to PM me.

As a side note, the stuff posted at the beginning of this page about FIU financially and the LCME aren't correct, but if you want to talk to me about them anyway you can still PM me.

FIU is a really fun school with awesome teachers/administrators who have won me over and I wouldn't go anywhere else if I could redo my pick between the schools that accepted me.

Good luck to everyone, I hope you ALL get in SOMEWHERE, FIU or not....its the beginning of a LONG journey!

Not sure of the exact date but I was complete around November 7th ish so it was about 2 weeks since being complete. OOS, 37M, 3.90c. hope that helps.

hey guys, just found out recently that i was accepted. here is my timeline...

Interview: 9/10 (morning, #15)
Review Complete: 10/26
Alternate List: 11/16
Accepted: 11/23

i thought it to be a strange turn of events in my favor. after interviewing so early and seeing the other posts of acceptances, i had began to worry. but this should be testament to other hopefuls that there is still a good chance of unexpected, yet good news down the line.

IS (UF)
34P (13 P, 10 V, 11 B)
3.7c, 3.7s
Taking year off (working/vol/research) bc last year was rough on me and i got waitlisted at 3 schools. i never got in but FINALLY got in this year as you can see in my signature.

Anyway, have another interview coming up next month, but will be extremely content to be with FIU in August

So I interviewed on Oct 29th I have several questions:

1) If the lady said I would be reviewed early december what's the turn around time between when you're reviewed and they let you know your status, they don't have fixed days do they?

2) Have the 80 spots been filled for sure?

The turn around time varies, but don't worry if you don't hear instantly.

As far as the 80 spots being filled I wouldn't know for sure because they don't really tell us M1s all of the details, however what I can say is that out of our M1 class of 43, I think only about 5 of us were accepted in the very first 40 accepted, so there is a pretty high turnover rate, so not being accepted right off the bat is not a big deal at all.

Hey, I interviewed with you 🙂 Grats on the acceptance!

How much is the deposit for FIU? And how long do they give you to pay it?

you are completely correct. I interviewed at FIU on the 19th of Nov. and they cleared up all of these rumors concerning their accreditation. FIU is young so they cannot become accredited at the provisional level until they graduate their first medical students (who are now in their second year). So, WATCH WHAT YOU READ ON SDN!!

Besides that, I have fallen in LOVE with this school!! I couldn't say one negative thing about FIU, and would DIE to got there. The staff is incredibly helpful and the medical students are eager and enthusiastic about their experiences at FIU. The interviewers seemed like they were matched, so to future interviewers: you should have no problem having a very conversational interview and the whole day is as laid and enjoyable as everyone says.

its $100. I was accepted on 10/16 and they gave me till the end of November to make the deposit so id say about a month. Grats on your acceptance 👍

I interview 9/27 and haven't heard anything back. So far my status has been Admissions Committee Scheduled (10/1) and then the date changed on 11/10, but it still says Committee Scheduled. Would it be rude to call and ask about the status of my application? I hate to nag but after I left I was under the impression that I would hear back in a few weeks, and it's been over two months...
Anyone 9/27+ received a decision?

tomato,
i would call in and see whats up. i interviewed a little before you (9/10) and had to wait until 11/16 to get an initial decision (waitlist, but eventually accepted on 11/26). in that span of time i probably called 3-5 times to see what was going on or when i might hear back.

"if you dont ask, you dont get."

PS - eablackwell - thanks on the congratulations, the same goes for you! there is a good chance i will be seeing you this coming fall, as from reading this thread i see you have made FIU your 1st choice!

dont know if this has been posted here as of yet, but here is some info on "Airport City at MIA" and FIU Medical City...

FIU News Link:
http://news.fiu.edu/2009/11/fiu-medical-city-at-mia/

YouTube video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yx49JguQicY

Basically its a proposed project including 3 components: "a luxury hotel with retail space, an airport utility plant and a medical services campus complex, where FIU would bring together our affiliates and other partners to offer state-of-the art outpatient services."

According to the timeline graphic in the video, it proposes to be completed around 2014/5.

Looks very interesting to me. This development could help FIU COM a lot and greatly increase its national/international appeal for students/faculty alike. Another good thing is that for current/prospective students, when they graduate or do residency, this could increase chances of employment in the area.

From what I've heard, FIU is very interested in keeping its graduates in Miami.

I just paid my deposit 😀😀😀

Is there a thread for FIU c/o 2015??

Hey Guys!
First off congratulations to all that have already been accepted. I recently changed status from Secondary application complete to Preliminary review complete after being at the last stage for a little over a month. On average how long did it take for your Preliminary Review Complete status change to an Interview invite?
Thanks!

To anyone who has already been accepted or heard back after your interview, how long after "Admissions Committee Review Completed" did you actually hear anything? I just got this status this afternoon and am worried I did not get a call or text. On my interview day they said I would be reviewed at the December 12th Review...or did they mean hear back around the 12th????

:scared: Scared

You should hear back within two weeks. When my status changed to what yours is now i called them and they said 10-14 days. I heard back exactly on the 14th day. Good Luck!
