Well they delayed the initial release of acceptances. Communication during this process is always a good thing I think.

Ah, I am pre-interview and this is the first thing I've gotten from them since my "supplemental received" email back in early August. Communication is good, but too little too late for me in this case.

Ah sorry to hear that. I'm surprised they sent that email out to everyone actually. The schools that haven't interviewed me haven't said anything either.

I wonder if all 20 acceptances went out immediately following that email, and none live in SDN land?

they sent out the acceptances already?? waaa i thought they were sending it out in late January!

Relax, he was just wondering. I strongly doubt any acceptances have been sent out yet. They told someone else they would be delaying it two weeks, so we will probably start to see people with acceptances soon, but not quite yet.

Sorry to burst your bubbles, but I attend Hofstra as an undergrad. In Hofstra-speak, early January really means... late January, early February if you're really unfortunate.

Plus do keep in mind that they are snowed in at the moment. I don't know if campus is open (it probably is, but limited staff).

You're on Hofstra time now - relax and sit back to think pretty gold and blue thoughts.

(Not bashing my undergrad - I do love my school even if I don't think the med school would be a good fit for me. Just take a deep breath. And yes, they do like to send out a lot of emails. I've received emails telling me to expect an email, and emails telling me that a letter is in the mail about housing. Not that she could tell me in an email, apparently. Just roll with it. It's Hofstra.)

EDIT: aaaand I just received an email, a call, and a text from Hofstra. Campus is closed tomorrow due to snow. No work will be done tomorrow. Good luck everyone.

I hope the promptness and attention to detail of admissions committee isn't indicative of the other parts of the medical school. Future letters of terror:

"We will be mailing your dean letters for residency before/after/maybe the deadline of X/Y/Z which will ultimately decide your professional life"

"We will not be mailing the letters sooner, rather than later, on a date to be decided, which may or may not occur on or before (or maybe sometime to a further date of rolling thoughts), but rest assured, the programs know that timing isn't everything and that you have nothing better to do than wait".

Haha, but I do love that the undergrad (which is interesting to see a junior on SDN) fully recognizes and accepts it.

Nothing will happen until the end of January, that much is pretty clear. But more importantly, lets discuss the risk of not being considered for top residency positions. I've asked a few program directors, and all 3 said they'd never consider a "new" school, its just too risky for them they said. I countered with "best scores, best letters, and you've met them before", and they still were very adamant about the "risk". Anyone asked others and heard differently?

That's the funniest thing I've read in a long time. Thank you.

I haven't heard anything from residency directors indicating they'd be less inclined to take a student from a new school; I guess I'm banking on the good reputation of North Shore.

I do, however, consider this a concern best left for a later date-- who knows when that'll be...

I think you're bringing up a great question about residency. In Hofstra's case though, I think the students can be confident they are at a significantly smaller (if any) disadvantage due to the new school label because the school has established clinical rotations . Einstein, and I believe Downstate, have been using the North Shore-LIJ system for clinical rotations for many years, so many residency directors will have already seen letters from people in the system. Hofstra's students are going to benefit from the years of experience the physicians in the system have teaching medical students and be very well prepared for residency. There is also a well established home residency program which is huge for the school. Additionally, many physicians in the North Shore-LIJ system have connections with other programs in the NYC metro area (I work in one and one of my bosses knew one of my interviewers). So within the NYC/Northeast area, I don't see students being at any disadvantage as long as they do well on Step 1. Maybe that's overly optimistic thinking, but medical students have been going through those hospitals for years and been getting LORs from the same doctors Hofstra students will get them from. On a more national level, say trying to match in California, I could see things being a bit tougher since residency directors may not be fully informed about the school/rotations and only see the label of it being a new school.

On a personal note, I've worked with a resident at one of the New York Presbyterian Hospitals who did some rotations in med school on LI on the North Shore-LIJ system. She really enjoyed her rotations on LI and was very excited to hear I was interviewing there. Other people have kind of shrugged at it being a new school, but I personally value what this resident thinks because she's focused on doing what you need to have a successful career in a competitive specialty.

I'm interested to hear what other people think as well, thanks for bring it up!

my friends just got accepted via that main page thing

what kind of stuff did they say in the acceptance letter? like did they accept all 20 people?

So I guess that's it for their Jan acceptances...

I wouldn't assume that. They said they are going to roll acceptances out in small groups (not 20, no idea where that number came from). Hopefully we'll start to hear soon.

Good point. I'm going based on medlove's post "
She also explained that most of us wouldn't be hearing back very soon... the priorities were the 20 acceptances in January. Although she did mention that if we were rejected we'd hear sooner than later because they didn't want to 'string us along'. They're ranking the waitlist but won't be sharing the rank with waitlisted students (she seemed offended when someone asked this)."

Who knows where that person got the 20 from...this is why they should just tell us upfront.

so how long does your friend have to decide? what stops all 40 people from holding multiple acceptances until may when they suddenly decide they want to go somewhere else? so the rest of us will have to hold our breath until then?

I don't think 40 people have been accepted just yet... and I think that's just how this works. It's not different at any other school, just so few spots at this one...

I'm sure its piece-wise out of the 20, and I suspect he compulsively checks his status pages. He didn't get an email, just a status change. They probably do it one at a time! So I'm sure its a copy paste, checkbox clicking process for the secretary to admit the first 20. I have other friends who interviewed in a similar time frame and have no change.

Just keep an eye on it over the next couple hours. He says it just says you have until Jan 31st to deposit 100 bucks. And the site is missing the acceptance link, so its clearly JUST gone up. Also, every first year student gets 20k scholarship each year.

thx for the info!

Has anyone been rejected yet pre-interview? I haven't yet, but I'm sure the invites are getting low...

How? Email? Phone?
Wow. Congrats!! You must be one of the first. Any word on scholarships in he letter?

they said all accepted applicants get $20,000 scholarships.. but it was an email! I'm sure they mailed a letter too.

Is there even a small chance left to get an interveiw invite at this late date?

I interviewed this week and I think they said they were wrapping up interviews at the end of the month.

Good luck with your other apps. 🙁

Congrats to those that received acceptances already! That's awesome! 😀

Would you mind telling us when you interviewed? I'm curious if they're doing it in any particular order, or if it is random.

Thanks!

accepted!

got the email around 3.

Interviewed: 10/22/10

accepted today around 3 as well!

interviewed 10/29

Got the letter this afternoon. I also heard the number 20 somewhere though to be honest I don't quite remember where. Out of the people who got in, are you leaning towards Hofstra or somewhere else?

do u know if they let all 20 people know today or if they will let some other people know later?

and has anyone been rejected at all?

congrats to you guys who got accepted =)
i had my interview on 11/22. still waiting =/

20 is very low... i highly doubt its 20. seeing we have like 5 right here on SDN.

how does the 20k scholarship annual work since they said first year is free... is it used to cover housing?

for those of you who were accepted or rejected, can you please post your stats, thanks!! and did anyone get waitlisted

so did everyone who get accepted get interviewed in october? did they only start interviewing in october?

And look, it's mid-January. I'm a bit impressed, to be honest. Go Hofstra!

Must be the North Shore influence. Congrats everyone! If you want to know information about the area or campus, please send me a message. As I said earlier, I'm an undergrad (junior) at Hofstra.

My impression from the interview as that those running the medical school seemed to distance themselves from really, truly being a part of Hofstra. It seemed more like "hey we have space here, they let us build here" type of thing rather than "we share administrative tendencies, etc."

Probably because the school has far more to do with NSLIJ than it does with the rest of Hofstra. Also, many of the administrators, such as Dean Smith, concurrently work for NSLIJ, and were originally employed by NSLIJ before this med school even existed.

Rejected pre-interview via email. Looking through MDapps, it appears that this school is showing preference to NY area residents.

Rejected pre-interview via e-mail at 3:33pm.

It would have been cool to be in the inaugural class but I guess it's also kinda cool that I may be the first person ever rejected from Hofstra SOM. Good luck to everyone still in the running!

does anyone think it will make a difference if I send a letter of intent at this point?

since the decision was probably already made and all~~

let me join in the pre0interview rejection party as well~!!! w00t w00t!! sent at 3:34

I actually got an interview invite last Friday the 14th. Super surprised becuz I only sent in the secondary app on the last possible day, Dec. 15th. Scheduled for Feb 8. Would love to get in here, it's one of my top choices!

Hey guys, I have an interview this Friday and was wondering if anyone stayed at the Marriott? If so, how long does it take you to walk to the interview in the morning? It looks kind of far on the map, but I'm guessing it can't be that bad if that's the suggested hotel.
