Man, anyone else got a case of the "Mondays" today? 🙂

I'm just guessing, but since during my interview they mentioned that they interview Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, my guess is that they meet on Wednesdays.

good deduction

I received a big package from Hofstra in the mail today! I was so happy for a split second until I opened it and saw......

a survey about popular magazines and newspapers from a research study at Hofstra undergrad.

:wtf:

Hi!

I was accepted to Hofstra in mid jan 🙂 and am still waiting on a few other schools but pretty sure I'll be going here in the Fall! I dont know the area very well and was wondering if anyone knew about available apartment buildings/interested in talking. I'm really excited and cant wait to talk to future classmates!

Well I know if I'm accepted I'm doing on campus housing.

Damn the new "Upload Supporting Documentation" window appeared at the bottom and I got excited for a moment before I realized what it was

did anyone get acceptances last week? someone posted that they were supposed to give out 20 more acceptances last week...

I was told that, but I'm not sure that any went out. I guess I was misinformed.

So if I interviewed late January, that means I can potentially get a reply from them next week or in 5 months....
Wow, that's very 'calming'.

Anyways, at my interview I felt like the weird one out of the bunch. Everyone else was 2-3 years out of college, while I am still a senior.

Many people really like the non traditional teaching style of the school. What do you guys think about it?

Well so far I don't think anyone on this forum has said they didn't like Hofstra after interviewing. I myself I find the curriculum exciting and a fun challenge.

interesting, at my interview i was the only one in graduate school... everyone(ish) was a senior

I just got an email from them saying that they weren't able to download my photo properly and asked that I resend it (which I did).

Though I don't want to jump to conclusions, this is the first direct contact I've had with them since my interview (other than the "thank you for your patience" emails), so I'm assuming they are in the process of reviewing more applications now? My interview was in mid-October btw. Good luck to everyone!

Got the same email this morning and interviewed in the same timeframe (ugg, so long ago!). At this point, I'm taking any and all communication as a good sign.

I was wondering if anyone could clarify what/if I should be uploading supporting documentation to my application? I just saw this option on the myhofstra portal, but was not exactly sure what it was for.

Thanks for any insight!

Just means if you have any new letters of recommendation or update letters informing them of something new about your experiences, you can use that to upload the document directly to them

I had this dream last night where people were continually mentioning "Friday"...a premonition perhaps?

Someone said it would be > 3 weeks from 2/11/2011 (according to the school); so early March would be the next round if that's true!

They told another buddy of mine (who int in Oct) that it could be as late as July that you hear anything from them after interview. That's rough! Hard to plan ahead with lease/life.

I would love to know how their process works! They seem super hesitant to just reject a few people and let them go. Looks like everyone is going to be sorted out slowly.

You could easily just call the 800 people interviewed and ask, "If accepted would you attend or at least consider it?" Half would probably say "I got into my top school, so no, bye!"

I still take it that no MD/PhD's have heard anything back? They said they were only gonna have 2 a week, so its like 30 kids total. How hard can it be to rank 6/30?

Again, awesome school, but if you have an acceptance that's decently ranked, why sit til July to hear back unless you SUPER love Hofstra? Orientation starts July 25!!! They're making this process super complex for too many people. I vote we secretly become "flies on the wall" and sit in on the next meeting.

It's also interesting that 5 or so of the accepted students are on SDN; gives a good estimate of the SDN sampling size! haha. I'd love to know the stats on the other kids, completely out of curiosity.

i plan to attend, i'm guessing they're going to try to sell us on the school. i also assume they're shacking us up somewhere since we'll be there two days..

I applied MD/PhD and still haven't heard back yet. I think my head will explode if I have to wait until July. 🙁

Hmm when is this event? Wonder if this is an attempt to see how many more acceptances they should send.

I went to the school today for the value of humanism lecture and stopped by the admissions office. A member of the admissions said they would probably accept another 15 students for a total of 30-35 students in ~3 weeks from now since they finished interviewing last friday and need a few more committee meetings to finalize their choices. After that, they will be accepting 1-2 students at a time depending on who accepts and declines their offer for admission.

Hope this helps.

thanks! it very much does help 👍

if this is true, in conjunction with the general consensus of this thread, it is interesting how extremely cautious they are not to overshoot their quota... other schools with the same 40 person limit are a little more bold (for lack of a better word)... they accept a larger number of students at this point and expect people to drop offers for other schools.

this just may not be the case for hofstra. i expect it would be very difficult to deny an acceptance from here, and i am sure they perceive this down at admissions HQ 🙂

Maybe or maybe not. If accepted at Hofstra and a top 30 school, may be a hard decision, or an easy decision. Some may want a new program (Hofstra), and some do not want a new program and be a guinea pig. Will be interesting to see what happens. As I read this forum, the consensus is that most are not that happy with the Hofstra admissions process, they appear to be disorganized and tell different stories to candidates all the time. So will this disorganization translate into offers not being accepted? We will have to wait.

i don't think they've been disorganized, just slow in releasing acceptances. I know it's frustrating, but they're not about to risk their accreditation by rushing to admit people.

I agree. I've been accepted to a top-tier school (top 40/120), and I'd still go to Hofstra if I don't get a great financial aid offer at some top 40-50 school. After using that stupid AAMC calculator, Hofstra is 1/3 the cost of other schools, and is actually the only curriculum that sounds "fun / practical". Everyone else sounds the same.

You have the choice to sit in a lecture hall 8 hours a day followed by 2 in a library; or spend 4 in lectures, 2 in small groups, 2 in a clinic and 2 in an ambulance or emergency room. Its an easy choice for me.

I think the mixed dates, numbers, stats, etc might just be a production of "trolls" or just misinformed people. It blows, but some schools haven't made any decisions either (they wait until interviews are done). I believe Cornell and Yale do this? I'm sure everything get super complex for a new school admissions, since they are super paranoid. Just gotta be patient til March.

from our point of view, we cannot help but question the merit of organization... however i concur with nnuk. hofstra is in it for the long run, and their foundation is crucial

but i agree with you gowiththeflo in that the only logical thing, which is far more easier said than done, is to wait. one my also find solace in the fact that most movement will come starting with the next month deadline

Good word EnginDoc 🙂 Yeah the UCs our here in Cali wait a while as well.

Disorganized may or may not be the best phrase. However, some people interviewed in October, and have heard nothing........rejection, wait list, or acceptance..........what gives with this.

I've been wondering about this too. We haven't heard much on the lines of rejections or wait lists.

I agree with this point. Its difficult to call it a "rolling" admissions process when you have to wait until the end to find out where you stand (I interviewed in October, the winter will have come and past since I interviewed). There were no negatives at all about my experience at Hofstra, really loved it, but this long wait has definitely been a drag.

if it makes anyone feel better, i called and asked about revisit...they said tentative april 9-10. more acceptances will definitely be out before then! which im sure is not too comforting, but thought id share : )

yea i would hate to be strung along for months if my chances were slim

that's the nature of the beast. we all knew there was a risk of not receiving a response from a school until july or august. hofstra has to be especially careful since it's their first year.

Really? I'm sure its happened, but the odds of getting an acceptance in August are about the same as having a meteor land on your house. Also, technically speaking, you would have already known you were on the waitlist if you were still in consideration over the summer. That is, you would have known where you stood in April, or May at the absolute latest. I'm certain that all of us will receive a response in the coming weeks.

Plenty of people get accepted to med schools in August. Obviously it's comparatively small to the other months, but it's not nearly that rare. My friend's friend was driving to their med school to move in, got a call from a preferred school while on the road, and turned the car around. That said, I don't imagine many will get in to Hofstra during August.

As I said, I know that it happens, rarely. I don't actually know the odds of having your house get hit by a meteor, or the odds of getting an acceptance in August. Though, I'd be willing to bet a donut that no more than 20 are accepted that late every year. I was just attempting to point out that the scenario posed doesn't actually happen or (in the case of an August acceptance) happens with much less frequency than anticipated
