I would be surprised if they are still interviewing after accepting over half their class

Well just because they accept 20 doesn't mean all (or even half) will attend. Most schools accept well over half their class before they finish interviewing, and many even accept their entire class before they finish interviewing. I'm going to a school in a few weeks that explicitly said they are only interviewing for the waitlist at this point.

After May 15 is when you can hold only one acceptance to med school, but may remain on waitlists. Up until then, the deadline for accepting is irrelevant, because you can accept multiple schools and the deposit is entirely refundable as long as you narrow it down to one school by May 15.

i could have sworn they told us on interview the deadline was april 15 for schools starting in august... a month earlier start means a month earlier acceptance deadline was my understanding

Here's the relevant traffic rule. Note the April 15 date is for schools starting in July. Most med schools start in August, Hofstra is not "early".

5. Prior to May 15 of the matriculation year (April 15 for schools whose first day of class is on or before July 30), April 30 for MD-PhD programs, each school or program permit ALL applicants (except for EDP applicants) - including those to whom merit or other special scholarships have been awarded:


a. A minimum two-week time period for their response to the acceptance offer.

b. To hold acceptance offers from any other schools or programs without penalty.

Ah, that's a good point. Off the top of my head, I thought I remember some of the schools I went to having orientation in July, and classes not starting for weeks later in August. For those schools I believe they stilled used the May 15th date. However, I'm not sure how technical the rules are.

To be perfectly honest, I've never heard of any date but May 15th being used during this process. If you think you heard April 15 during the interview day, it's possible I missed it, but it seems a little odd they would use that date. Does anyone else know? Possibly someone with an acceptance packet?

one also must consider that hofstra starts earlier than most schools because they will train all the students to be EMTs before the first day of class... no other school (that i know of) does this

if the deadline is april 15, they might start sending the letters out sooner than later

Oh I didn't realize you had one (congrats!). Regardless of that deadline, if their visiting students day is in April, they most likely will try and fill the class before then, so I'm sure more letters will indeed be sent out soon.

I was looking at the same webpage about the information and the following point stood out:

4. By March 30 of the matriculation year, March 15 for MD-PhD programs, each school or program have issued a number of offers of acceptance at least equal to the expected number of students in its first-year entering class and have reported those acceptance actions to the AAMC Section for Medical School Application Services.

If we're going by this guideline, Hofstra should accept 40 people total by the end of the month. It also makes sense knowing they want to have an Accepted Student Day in April. So I'd expect to hear something by the end of the month.

So I got bored at work and read the student handbook.

Cool factoids that wasn't explained all that well (or at all) in my interview:

You are assigned 5 mentors (in diff specialties) for the duration of your time there, and one sort of over-arching adviser. And you meet with all of them as you chug along, so tons of feedback and advising.

You start off doing clerkships in groups of 6-8 wandering between different low-level care centers and get assigned a group of 12 patients (of various age/disease) who you are expected to monitor / follow / meet with for the first 2 years (more often than weekly/montly, as most schools). I was also told they also have space in ambulances and ED's you can work shifts for (as early as you complete the EMT/ACLS training). So hell of a lot of practical hands-on work that I've heard of no other school offering, or even coming close to.

The grading system is pass / low-pass / fail; and each course has tons of subsections; so there won't be any cut-throat behavior going on, which will be a nice change from those damn pre-med classes.

The second two years seem to have more elective/selective/career time than most other schools that I can remember showing on their interview days. Only a few others (UVM) have that much stretch room.

Unfortunately the day-to-day schedule isn't there, or described in the least, its all these vague classes & themes. At my interview they had a week schedule that was sort of randomly themed.

Anyone remember what the day to day routine looks like?

This may explain why they are taking a while. Later interviewers can easily knock out higher scored applicants. They probably want to rank everybody, sort out how many waitlist spots, and delete the rest.

And lastly, did anyone's interviewer tell them that tuition would be free for the first class?

joe, the financial aid advisor said that they were working on a financial package for the charter class, but many interviewees asked about free tuition and he said it may be a possibility, but no decision was made at the time. (this was back in november).

If I'm not mistaken, someone said there was a $20000 scholarship for each year if you are part of the charter class.

Thanks for the information, NewBrand! This makes me like Hofstra more and more... (not that my totally loving Hofstra was in doubt 😛)

The financial aid guy who came and gave us a presentation (I think it was Joe Nicolini, but I'm not 100% sure) said there would be a "significant scholarship", but that it would not be full ride. He said some other new med schools had given full rides to the entire first class, then had no money left over for scholarships for the second class.

It's been announced that scholarships will be $20k yearly for each member of the inaugural class, which still puts a huge dent in the total cost. Or, in honor of our Long Islandese school, yooooge.

Does this 20 person committee meeting happen that Wednesday after we've interviewed? And what if you've submitted additional documents since then--when do those get considered?

So, I decided to also investigate the student handbook - good catch, NBD - and it looks to me like final grades are pass/fail for all vertical courses, Structure I and II, and PPS. However, each individual assignment is graded "meets expectations", "meets expectations with concern", or "does not meet expectations". Any individual test/assignment/whatever in the lower two categories will automatically trigger supportive services.

That being said, I totally agree that the p/f will cut off most, if not all, of the cutthroat behavior to which we have long been exposed. I got the impression on my interview day that part of what they were looking for in prospective students was the ability to thrive in a non-hypercompetitive environment.

something I personally like about Hofstra is that every exam is free response. this would mean more personalized feedback about what to improve on instead of "you chose the wrong answer, sorry." also, I believe that the problem based learning every week will better prepare you for the boards since you are constantly applying the knowledge to cases.
Also, Hofstra has a large variety of electives and selectives in specialties not offered at most medical schools.

I played with some financial aid calculators today, as I've starting filling all those awful forms out, and if you plan on a longer residency (peds surgery anyone?), then something like Tufts (most expensive in US) vs Hofstra is a big gap, almost $500,000 difference ($450k vs $950k for 25 y repayment)!

This gap shrinks to about $300k if you do an aggressive 10y repayment.

That's interesting when you compare it like that. Although, a 25 year repayment is probably way too long. If you do become a peds surgeon, you're going to be making quite a bit, so you should be able to pay it off fairly quickly.

It's obviously a big difference. But dont forget other schools have some form of aid too. Hofstra, after aid, ends up to cost around the same as the SUNYs before their aid. Though it's rare for sunys to give a huge chunk of grant/scholarship aid, people do get thousands.

Probably false. I called two weeks ago and my window was could be tomorrow, could be two weeks... until July. 🙁

My understanding from what an admissions officer was telling me is that they would fill the class in the next month and then slowly accept 1 or 2 as people were rejecting their acceptances from Hofstra because of an acceptance at another school. Either way, lets hope for some good news fast!

I don't see why they wouldn't fill their class ASAP so that more than 20 can come. I'm sure only half of those invited will be able to anyhow, with short notice. Also, the financial aid deadline is listed as April 1st! Keep your fingers crossed, I smell notifications on the horizon.

If I remember correctly, they have 4 spots for MD/PhD. Its possible they've already handed out 4 acceptances there.

I'm sure we'll hear something within the next two weeks. They can't hold out much longer.

They don't "have" to do anything. Schools don't all abide by those rules (there is no one to enforce them I'd imagine), especially not new schools who are having a harder time anyhow. They are just guidelines (pirate code!).

Much like you are not SUPPOSED to hold more than 1 acceptance after May 15th, but I've met plenty of jerks who do anyways.

Well I find fifteen minute breaks help. So instead of staring at your e-mail from dawn till dusk straight, fit in a few fifteen breaks at different parts of the day. I find that works wonders.
