NICE. It managed to snow in NYC this morning. So much for Spring. 👎

True, but St. Patty's Day and the rest of the weekend were truly gifts. Didn't even need a jacket in the city.

LOL idk how conducive Jones Beach is to that....

Well hey, if we get in, we're the pioneer class shaping the Hofstra program. So one of our first orders of business will be "shaping" Hofstra medicine by installing a sand area for volleyball in that grass lot next to the med building. And perhaps a badass adult playground or something of the sort.

+1. I can dig it (pun intended) 😉

I believe that is the football and lac training field lol

Well if they can play professional football with a professional baseball field in the middle, they can play, whatever division Hofstra football is, with a volleyball sand pit in the middle

No worries, hofstra has no football team anymore!

No football training going on at Hofstra these days. They discontinued the program last year. (The consensus on campus is that it they wanted to put the money into the med school.)

As for surfing... there's always Montauk.

Um, they cut the football team because it was bleeding money (and they wanted a medical school???)
Too bad, Hofstra put out a few good pros, but it costs A LOT of money to run a mid-level I-AA team. This ain't Ohio State.

Then who were the kids doing tire throws across the field during my interview day in the snow lol

Perfect! We'll install a beach in half the football stadium and a wavepool in the other half. Surfing and volleyball solutions fixed!

i know we say this every week, but i have a feeling this is the one! lolz:laugh:

There's a good shot that some will go out if they want to heed the recommended march 30th deadline, my guess is it's only 20 though, or maybe 20 + however many from the first batch declined

good speculation

Did anybody decline their spot so far?

I very much doubt anyone turned down their spots (especially with the up front 80k off coupon, and unlikely anyone will do so before the formal financial aid has come out). After that (mid-april?), I'd imagine people will be more realistic and withdraw or solidify their decision.

ALSO: If you are accepted, join the forum on MyHofstra. There are 6 other accepted students on it, who have all shared their emails, and some have shared their plans for accepted student day.

i wonder how many other accepted students are out there that haven't joined the accepted student forum....cuz if there's only 6 people on there then maybe we can hope for more than 20 acceptances this next round!!!

I really don't want to be the bearer of bad news... so much so that I went back and forth with even writing this... but I figured people would likely rather me share this info now than sit on the edge of their seats until April 9th expecting some big round of acceptances that just isn't coming.

I was at the med school for a lecture this evening (unrelated to admissions, it was part of their lecture series but many administrators attend them) and it was clearly stated (no middle-man involved in this whatsoever) that they were required to send out 40 offers of acceptance by March 15th and that they had in fact done so. So, there is officially no truth to the "only 20 acceptances have gone out theory." (I even said, "Listen can you clear something up for me because this is what I'm reading online..." and that's how I got an explanation of what's going on on their end.) They will slowly offer acceptances as people decline their offers of admission and the typical situation of "we'll have a better idea of how many seats are filled after May 15th" still applies.

I was as bummed by the news as I'm sure most of you waiting to hear from Hofstra are. Wish I could've had better news for you all. Good luck!!

*#&$!!! that sucks... how depressing is that ^ oh well, are those odds any different than 20/780? either way chances are unlikely, lets all emotionally prepare -- accept the worst and hope for the best.

cheers

P.S. Does anyone know if they plan on officially rejecting and waitlisting people?

Ummm that doesn't exactly make sense since AMCAs states
"By March 30 of the matriculation year, March 15 for MD-PhD programs, each school or program have issued a number of offers of acceptance at least equal to the expected number of students in its first-year entering class and have reported those acceptance actions to the AAMC Section for Medical School Application Services."

G Darn Pissed: I tried to ask a few times about WL/rejections but never got an answer that involved either status.

adevo911: I really don't know what to tell you. I figured the best way to figure out where they stood at this point was to ask. Truthfully, I didn't expect to get an answer other than "anytime between now and July" like everyone is getting when they call, but this is the reply I got so I figured I'd pass it along.

It is indeed true. I heard two different people in the school yesterday say that they received deposits for the 40 spots already.

Hmmm well...guess that's my cue to join some tribe on a small island and learn to be a witch doctor (W.D.). In the future, if anyone starts suffering from migraines look me up...I'll shrink the pain away!

That seems odd. We didn't get the same surge of people claiming to be accepted on SDN. When the first 20 went out we had 7 people on SDN say so. How did they let out 20 more and just 1 person here got it?

Also, how the heck did they get their deposits in so quick, it took them over a week to acknowledge my deposit (even after the 3 days it to took me to find my damn checkbook, write a check, find a stamp, and mail it in). These are all very complicated tasks apparently given my filing system (insert t-shirt, folders, snacks and alarm clock into the same pile).

If they do have 40 acceptances, and everyone accepted, that's great for the school. Its a good sign, and hopefully they'll send out a ranked WL soon too. Giving out all the acceptances implies they've scored everyone.

I don't understand this at all. They've already decided on the 40 and are waiting until May 15 to see how many decline then. So why not start handing out alternate list spots or waitlist spots are whatever they want to call them? Even if they give them to everyone who has interviewed, I think people would still want SOME response to let them know that the admissions committee hasn't completely forgotten about them.

Yeah, it's strange that only 1/20 newly accepted people posted on SDN. Maybe they are telling us these things so we calm down a little

why do more work when you don't have to. its easier for them to reject at the end than do waitlist blah blah then reject.

you're absolutely right. although the news really sucks, thanks for telling us and i'm sure no one blames the messenger. now we can stop refreshing this forum page and just stick to stalking our inboxes.

I think there's one scenario which we might have overlooked:

When the first batch of acceptances went out, we all assumed that there were 20 at that point, whilst in reality, it could have been 30 or even 35. The remaining few acceptances would have then gone out two weeks ago (the last MD/PhD reported acceptance) thus decreasing the likely-hood of any reporting on SDN. This all is speculation, of course, but that's what SDN is all about! 😉

Also, during interview day, I asked about the WL and was told that it would be unranked (at least not visible to us). Granted, at the time, it didn't seem like they were entirely sure how they were going to handle the WL just yet, so this could change still.

...When the first batch of acceptances went out, we all assumed that there were 20 at that point, whilst in reality, it could have been 30 or even 35...

to refutiate that
i interviewed in late january, and they said there were plenty of spots still available., i doubt they meant 5

I also don't understand why they'd interview on March 11th if they were planning on sending the rest of the acceptances only 4 days later...

Yea a lot of this just doesn't make sense but then again we probably don't have all the info. Has anyone else called in the last 2 days?

I called today. I asked if all acceptances had been sent out and was told that this could not be confirmed or denied because he did not know. There was nothing to read in to it (in case I am not describing the conversation clearly). He simply did not or could not share that information over the phone. He reiterated the mantra, so familiar to us all, "anytime between now and July."

hahaha I heard one of the radio morning shows in NY talking about this last week. So funny/awful/great. Glad I took a peek on here bc that was a great way to kick off my weekend o'biochem studying. Thanks!
