So, um, how long does Mayo take to reject people pre-LOR?

I submitted my AMCAS in early July, MCAT came out mid-August...still no word, no e-mail from them whatsoever. I assumed I had been silently rejected, but I notice other people getting official rejections so now it seems a bit weird.

I've pretty much given up hope at this point. I received a LOR request form from Mayo about 3 weeks ago and haven't heard anything else. It's pretty much November now and so my hopes of getting an interview are pretty much zero. O Well. I guess I'll just keep waiting for the rejection.

I'm in the same boat! LOR request 10/6. Word on the street is that it takes them 4-5 weeks to send out confirmations, and then they make an interview decision in the next week or two. Keep your head up, and an eye on your inbox this week and next.

Has the second round of decisions (after the Oct 18th batch) gone out, or is it yet to come?

At least a couple of accept/hold decisions have made their way out. They don't really do things in batches per se.

I don't think it normally takes that long. I payed my secondary fee August 18, got a LOR request September 10. You might try calling the admissions office - the folks in the office there are generally helpful and polite (in marked contrast to the offices at a lot of big-name east coast schools, I might add). They should be able to help you figure out if your file has been misplaced or if an email got misdirected or what.

Has anyone with letters received 9/30 still heard no news about invite/rejection?

I thought you guys might be interested to know that, (at least on last year's thread), almost half of Mayo's acceptances went out to people eventually put on hold/alternates list....

That's good to hear. I fear that if I thought any higher of the Mayo Clinic I would commit Idolatry.

Really, it seemed from Marcy's description of the process during my interview that they do. She said that they discuss groups of people and give the decisions every two to three weeks.

Yea, it looks like the second batch went out Oct 29th. Oh well...another 2 weeks to wait.

I'm not really getting my hopes up at this point...just hope I get selected for the wait list in Feb and get offered an acceptance from there. I believe they will begin to reject people currently on hold around Feb-March.

Man, I was really hoping I would not have to wait another two weeks to know my status.

Anyway, afob100, I don't think you have to get on the wait list to get accepted. From what I understand, you can get directly accepted just like anyone who has interviewed, since the admissions committee reviews on hold interviewees every time it meets.

This is true.

Is there a shuttle that goes directly from Rochester Airport to the downtown campus? I've been trying to find it for the last 20 minutes. (Sorry if this has already been asked. I don't feel like reading thro 20+ pages when there's a midterm tomorrow... 😀)

Yes, there is. Just go to the front of the airport (which is down the stairs, only one hundred feet from the gate--no joke, the airport is that small), and ask for it. I recall its $11.50 for the shuttle, and $25 for a cab.

Haha, once you arrive at the Rochester Airport all shuttles go to Mayo. It's like a yellow brick road. Just exit the plane, follow the crowd, and catch a shuttle to downtown in the ground transport area. There is nowhere else to go, unless you're interested in seeing the giant corn statue 😉

Apparently, the shuttle meets all incoming flights, but I've heard of people having to have them call the shuttle after they landed. As Mufti said, it costs $11.50 each way. If you want a return trip, they will pick you up at any of the area hotels within something like a half-hour window (although for return trip you're best splitting a cab with another interviewee). Call (507) 282-2222 for details.

Congrats to those of you that have been accepted to Mayo! I have read this entire thread and can only hope to get the chance to interview. I am a late applicant & received my LOR request on 10/30. Just crossing my fingers. and toes. and anything else I can cross.

Thanks! That helped a lot 🙂

Honestly, Sorta, I'm embarrassed for you that you'd give out your personal number as a "shuttle" to Mayo. That's shameful. You can't be that desperate.

...and that's sarcasm, folks!

It seems like it's just about the only way to find a date in Rochester... well, unless you find someone in the class to date. You're just jealous you didn't think of it first.

Now get back to studying anatomy, Nerday!

I also received a "letters complete" mailing on 9/30 and havent heard anything since. I suspect this is a rejection, but perhaps someone has a counterexample story?

I want to believe.

It doesn't seem like Mayo does the silent rejection thing. If and when they reject you, they will let you know.

LOR downloaded this morning. Requested 10/6 (I think). I was complete mid-September. :xf:

Same on all counts! (Complete 9/17, LOR Request 10/6).

They say the final review can take up to 3 weeks. Deep breaths, y'all!

Still waiting on mine, had my request on 10/6

Damnit I'm willing to go down there personally and download it FOR them!

Rejected this morning.

Complete mid July, LOR request early October. Never got a letter confirmation - just rejection. Oh well, it was a long shot. Stats - GPA - 3.85 (cum and science) and 30 MCAT. Knew it was a stretch, but I'm glad I tried. Good luck to all and congrats to those accepted.

:luck: at your other schools!

Sorry to hear that Biochem =/ I'm also waiting to hear back from a 10/6 LOR request....

EDIT: LORs received and in line for review at 2:33!

LOR received today but apparently they weren't signed...blah more waiting now since I have to send again

Just in case people are interested--23 people have been accepted, so roughly 27 spots remain to be filled. The next round of decisions will go out in roughly 10 days.

Thanks for letting us know! Does anyone know if there are still interview spots available? I had a 9/17 LOR and I think we're all hoping we can still get a shot at interviewing. 🙂

Hi All!

I can't find good flights (less than $500 and 12 hrs long one way - on a domestic flight!!!) except for 5 PM on the day of my interview. They say to not schedule flights out of RST earlier than 6 PM but since RST is 10 min away, is it actually doable for me to get to the airport by like 4 or 4:30?

On a related note, is it easy to just hop on a shuttle (are they regular and frequent) and can we leave our suitcase in a closet or something?

Just random - do we go outside at all during the day? I am wondering if my suit itself needs to be super warm or if I just need to worry about getting to the interview in the morning without freezing 🙂

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know about others, but my ticket was around the same price range (~$450) as yours. My theory as to why tickets are so expensive into Rochester is that because Rochester's airport is so small, you will almost always have to get a connecting flight into Rochester, sometimes with more than one airline company. I actually had two stops in between (I flew from Newark, NJ).

As for a flight at 5, its going to be close. The interview day finishes around 3:30, but I can easily see it going longer. If it does finish around 3:30, then you're fine, but if it becomes 4:30, that's cutting it close (it does take around ten to fifteen minutes to get to the airport). If the 5 PM flight is the only option, then you should contact the admissions office and let them know your dilemma. When going back to the airport, you can take a shuttle or a cab--its easier to take a cab with other interviewees and split the cost, since cabs are always going to be hanging around the Mayo Clinic. The shuttle comes around as well, but I think there is some time in between.

Leaving your baggage in the admissions office is probably not a problem. I've seen everyone do it at other interviews, though at the Mayo interview, I left my suitcase at the Kahler Grand.

And yes, there is a lot of outside walking, since during your self-exploration and the student guided tours, you will go from building to building (though you can use the subway). I brought a thick coat when I interviewed, but for some reason or another, mid October had very unusual good weather, so it was not needed. I don't know how it is now, but if it is cold then you certainly want to bring a winter suit or a coat.

I flew into Minneapolis and it was much cheaper than flying into Rochester (~$250). The GoRochester shuttle was very easy to find and it seems to run every hour. It dropped me off right in front of the Kahler which is across the street from the Gonda Building.

I left my bags in the conference room during the interview day and that worked great for me. It was pretty chilly throughout the day, but it wasn't a problem because my tour guide used the subways to get around. I wore a coat over my suit when I walked outside and it kept me warm.

Hope this helps! GOOD LUCK! The interview day is very low stress, the students are all wonderful, the staff is amazing, and my interview group had some awesome people from everywhere. Have fun ... this place is unlike anything I have ever experienced.

Your applicant compadres are mostly correct, but may be slightly misguiding you. Here is certifiably (by who, I don't know) correct information:

1. For your first question regarding flights, the airport is actually about 20-25 minutes away. It is easy to get a shuttle, but if you need to be there by 4pm or 4:30pm, make sure to tell the admissions office ahead of time so that they schedule your interviews to get you out in time. It shouldn't be an issue, but call before you book your flight (if you haven't booked it yet) to make sure. I know some applicants usually have to go a little early and it shouldn't be a problem. And yes, shuttles are easy to hop and close to the medical school. You will want to find out the shuttle schedule using the Go Airport Shuttle from the Kahler Hotel.

2. You might go outside during the day, but here is a situation where good old common sense comes in. What would your parent say? Bring a jacket! Unless you are coming from a place so warm that you don't own a jacket (I know this is possible), just bring one. It is not abnormal or unexpected for applicants to show up in sensible outerwear. You will be able to leave it in the medical school conference room for most of the day, so you won't have to carry it around or anything.

3. Good luck!

~Nerday

Thanks for all your travel-related advice!

I will definitely be bringing a coat - I just have this feeling it will be even colder than my coat will protect me from (interviewing at the end of November)! I am from the southern part of NY and I hear MN is much colder :-D

And thanks - I will call about scheduling before buying my $850 plane ticket(s) O_O

Sounds good. That does sound expensive - I am from the New York area as well, and my airfare was never that high. Make sure to check Sidestep.com to see if you can get it cheaper. If not, it's worth it - promise!

Also check Southwest... they fly to MSP, but I was able to get back to MSP in time for my 6:00 flight. They fly out of LGA as well. From Dallas, my flight wasn't more than $300.
