anything today.......? it's awfully quiet in here

my thoughts exactly. I interviewed two weeks ago and this marks the SECOND silent notification date. I want to be in GR for med school so much, I can't handle this suspense!! AHHH! *eats cookie*

Do you think the dean will call me at 8pm? I doubt it. sigh.

Haha, we are all hoping for that- the latest I have seen is around 9ish. I wonder if they forgot? Usually there is a flurry of messages..hmmmmmmmm

If you're alternate listed, will they review your application along with all the other interviewed apps still?

I guess I'm just wondering if I should hope for something tonight, too. Haha.

I'm in the same boat as u. I wish they'd reject us if they don't want us already rather then torturing us.

I'm with you there! Since it takes so long to hear back from everyone... it doesn't leave a lot of time to prepare for the next application cycle. I'm really hoping I won't have to worry about that!!! :xf:

Its a gorgeous facility. I interviewed there recently.

I don't suppose anyone could tell me about how long they waited after an interview to hear whether they were accepted/put on alternate/rejected?

I was notified by the dean two notification dates after my interview. GL!! :luck:

Could someone who has interviewed at MSU tell me if they were asked for a CV/resume during their visit or found it helpful to have one?

I am interviewing soon and can prepare one if it will be useful, but I want to be sure that I am making the best use of my preparation time.

Thanks! 🙂

Anyone know anything about the ABLE Program? I've seen the website but there's not much info on it. How many people get in? Curriculum? More details please...

IDK how many people get in but you have to be invited to interview. So if they are considering you for med school, but feel you may need that extra year to prepare, then you will be invited. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I wouldn't bring one if I were you. Your interviewers have all the application materials they need from you. It'll be a semi-open file interview, where your interviewers only have the non-academic parts of your AMCAS and your essays--no GPA, MCAT, courses taken, etc.

I think a better use of your preparation time would be to look at interview feedback reports for MSU, know your AMCAS application and essays inside and out, prepare yourself to potentially answer some bioethics questions, and be ready to discuss meaningful stories from your past.

Good luck! Just be yourself, stay comfortable, and you'll do just fine.

Thank you so much for the helpful advice! This is my first interview and I want to do well because MSUCHM is my top choice. I am much less nervous now. 😀

Surprised with an interview here on 2/24 at the Grand Rapids campus! I'm shocked because of my OOS status and my sub 30 MCAT score. I was originally on hold for an interview.

Did anyone here anything on Feb. 1st? Didn't here a peep about that notification date. Maybe they had to cancel notifying people that day because of the snow-pocalypse that day. I live 20 minutes from the GR CHM campus and we got 16 inches of snow that night. Hoping to here something next tuesday :xf:.

Have any accepted applicants received an official acceptance email after submitting their CBC?

Consider yourselves lucky. I have been complete since mid October and am still on hold of preliminary review. I am also In state. GPA of ~3.6 and MCAT of 32. Also does anyone else get some weird error when logging on to CHM's website to check their status? I keep getting this fatal error and undefined index every now and then and usually have to wait a day or two for my login to clear so I can check again.

No, I submitted CBC like 4 weeks ago too....IDK why it's taking them so much longer to get them out this year than it has in previous years, it is making me nervous 🙁

i think the next day is feb 15 (don't want you to be uneasy for no reason)

Got an invite yesterday for the 24th too!

OOS, I was complete in August and was never put on hold. See you guys there!

Complete since sept. oos. no news. still in prelim interview. not even preinterview hold. with my stats I'd expected rejection by now but my friends already rejected and still no word from teh school. i also get teh problem u do and then refresh and it becomes normal.

I am instate though and in fact went to MSU for undergrad. Also I tried refreshing and it doesn't work, even tried using google chrome as oppose to firefox and same error.

actually i think the next notification date is the 8th of feb and then the one after that is the 15th of feb

I just got an interview invite!!! I have been complete since the end of July! I was never put on hold, but just had the complete status all of this time.

I am so unbelievable excited and kind of in shock. I am OOS (from California), but my significant other is a second year at CHM, so I have been crossing my fingers to hear from them for so long!

Yay!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

I was just reading into the email I got from the CBC company and it says that you have access to your CBC for 10 days until it is released to the schools that want it, so technically MSU won't get the CBC till 10 days after you get that e-mail and then another 2 or 3 weeks after that until you can expect to get the formal acceptance.

Yes, you are right! I think they may have just added the day due to the snow storm. Nevertheless, good luck!!

To all of the Feb 24th interviewees---

Is your interview for Fall 2011 or for the ABLE program Fall 2011? (out of curiosity)

I was placed on the alternate list about a month ago. I just sent in an update letter and I will probably send at least 2 more before May 15! Maybe they will get the hint that this is really where I want to be 😉

I just sent in an update letter and I will probably send at least 2 more before May 15!

Maybe I'm irrational, but I'd like to think that most (if not all) schools would choose one candidate over another based on merit, not based on frequency of communications from the applicant.

I'm all for sending updates if you've got something substantial to add to your application. As far as LOI's, though, the fact that you fronted $150, went to an interview, and sent an update should be enough to drive the message home... multiple LOIs might come off as brown-nosing.

You're right, MSU-CHM's alternate list is not ranked. They said they just review files on the list whenever the number accepted falls below a threshold.

That said, do you think they compare alternates with those interviewed? If that's the case, then people on the alternate list may have hope for a phone call on a notification date.

Med school admissions is a lot more complex then that. You have to realize the reason that update and interest letters make a difference sometimes even fi the person has more average stats then say another person is because at many schools they are trying to produce physicians who may either practice in that area after med school and residency or may fulfill some mission of theirs whether it is to become primary care physicians or academic physicians to increase number of physician scientists to continue the future of research or whatever whatever. Many kids with high stats will get accepted to certain schools but in truth never go to those schools because they are just backup schools.

For instance, USF prior to the past few years used to have half their class form waitlist because a lot of people with high stats and merit choose to go to more reputed schools. So they used to take into account update letters and stuff because it showed interest in actually attending USF and not just someone who has the merit but may not even end up going to the school. Also, it sometimes help show interest sometimes because it shows the difference between those who have merit to get in and are actually interested in going there and those who have the merit but will turn down a school.

Also, final point. If you've interviewed you have the merit to be there. The truth is it is already so highly selective to interview at a school. If a school has interviewed you chances are they believe in you and saw something in you that they liked. They believe you can make it through their program and may possibly be a good fit with the school to some degree. So who is to say that you are less qualified if you are on an unranked waitlist with others.

of course this would have to assume that this waitlist is unranked and that there is a chance of moving up. On ranked ones it is different and no amount of updates would do any good.

Do you think schools accept applicants off of the alternate list based on the perceived desire to matriculate? I think this is partially taken into account. In the upcoming months I will have many things to update the committee about. Each letter will not be a mere repitition of the previous one... this would be a waste of time. However I am serious about CHM and I plan to communicate this to the adcom. Will it pan out? Who knows.

It's not a bad deal if you are chosen for it.

Not for ABLE to my knowledge. I'd be a bit annoyed if it were, as that was not mentioned in the invite email.

From what I gleaned on interview day, when you get invited to interview, you are interviewing for, at base, a regular medical student status at MSU-CHM. After the interview, each applicant receives one of four outcomes: 1) Accepted, 2) Alternate List, 3) ABLE Program Referral, or 4) Rejection.

So I think ABLE is something that you get considered for after your interview. Good luck!

What's hard is the wait in limbo. Interviewed in Oct., but have received none of the 4 listed outcomes. I'm ok with it because it means I'm still in the running, but it's kind of strange to be good enough to still be under consideration and not waitlisted, but obviously not good enough to be accepted....yet.😉

That's strange that you've waited so long. I interviewed in January and got my decision less than a week later. I wonder what's taking them in your case?

are you IS or OOS? Messenger are you OOS or IS too?

weird I assumed IS interviewees post interview would find out their status soon.

Have you contacted them? I have not heard of being in limbo that long after interview. A polite email just to be sure that you did not miss one of their communications, is appropriate at this point.

Hey Everyone! I was accepted to CHM back in October and will be matriculating there. Just wanted to drop in and wish the rest of you who are still waiting to hear good luck, and hopefully I'll see you in the fall! 🙂

When I interviewed there, they told me that if you have not heard anything in 6 weeks that it is appropriate to call or email them. I would not hesitate to contact them.

Well this is just too weird. The call came in tonight.🙂 Thanks for the heads up though! I was just going off of what they had on the admissions website about not contacting them, and they never told me about not hearing anything for 6 weeks to get in touch with them. For me, it was over 12 weeks! Anyway it worked out. Thanks again! Good luck to everyone!!

My call came at 6:39 tonight. What a great feeling.
Interviewed 1/20.
Good luck to everyone and congrats to those already accepted.

Congratulations!!! What a feeling it must be to get accepted 🙂 Do you have any tips for those of us who are interviewing at MSU in the upcoming week. What is the best way to prep?

I am interviewing at MSU and one of the items that they are requesting from me is a wallet-sized photo. All I have are some casual snapshots of myself. Should I get a more formal photo taken or just use one that I already have?😕
