Got the call this past Monday! My first acceptance being to my top choice school was quite the lucky combination! 😍

Just wondering about how housing works. I currently go to OSU as an undergrad and I know that right now is the season for undergrads to sign leases for the coming year. I feel like I should start looking for somewhere to live since I want to live somewhere in the campus area near the med center. Just wondering how things worked out for some current med students here. I don't want to get stuck living somewhere I don't want to since I waited so long, but at the same time most people won't know where they are going for a while from now. Everyone ends up finding somewhere to live so I'm wondering if I'm just being neurotic at this point.

Decision monday! Kinda nervous about the whole thing. Not making it better is the fact that I am working on three papers due in the next 2 days, and studying for 2 exams in the next 3 days! Pile on waiting for a phone call, and i'm jittery as heck!

In the library studying, but phone is on full ring anyway starting at 6PM EST since I don't want to miss it!

I feel ya, had a biochem exam today and was just so jittery hoping for a call later. Hope we both get great news 🙂!

I just got the call!!! Never have been happier to receive a restricted call at 11:15 at night lol. Hope everyone else who is waiting gets good news as well. I'll be hoping for you guys and gals too :xf:

no call. bummed. on two waitlists already, was hoping this would be an acceptance so that i'd at least know for sure what i'm going to be doing 8 months from now.

still time to apply DO though, i guess.

Sorry if this has been answered many times already, but does anyone know if OSU is still handing out interviews for spots in the class or if they are already onto waitlist spots? I was really hoping to interview here, but have heard nothing 🙁

Don't know if your question has already been answered - but I just got an interview invite today (12/21)!!

Edit: Interview invite is for 1/5/11 -- is it strange that it is so much earlier compared to the other ones?

IS, Mich grad, somewhat nontrad, 35 S, 3.5 gpa. Good research/volunteering. Strong interest in teaching/academic medicine.

Congrats on getting interview.
Others have received interview dates in March, so it is obvious that you received someone's cancellation slot.

Well, luck is definitely on your side getting that interview date! I got invited for a 2/28 interview a couple of weeks ago....they must be holding some earlier interview spots open for special (i.e YOU!) people they are dieing to get to know. I am on the list of 10+ people they said they would call if there were any cancellations/new spots opening up last minute! Congrats and good luck!

OMGosh! I just got an interview invite for March! Is that too late to interview there and have a chance for automatic acceptance?

Interview invite today for March, IS with about average stats for Ohio State.

Am I the only person that hasn't heard anything from OSU 🙁 Complete late September. Congrats to you guys that got interviews and acceptances though. I'm really happy for you guys 🙂.

Dr. Capers assured us that they interview for acceptance (NOT straight for the waitlist) up through march.

I also talked to a current med student who said he got accepted from an interview in late feb.

Thank you! I looked at last years thread and saw one person post that they were accepted about two weeks after their mid March interview... so there is a chance! Which would be great. 🙂

don't worry about your chances, just rock the interview and you ll be great! Merry Christmas y all!

Well I'm from Cleveland so if you wanna talk snow, I'm an expert.

Make sure you check the weather before you come (obviously). If it isn't actively snowing on Monday, the roads should be fine. But if you're driving and they predict heavy snow, make sure you leave ample extra time to get to your interview. Columbus is pretty awful at keeping the roads plowed when there's a big storm.

Other than that, its pretty obvious. Just bring a heavy coat, scarf, gloves, etc (you have to walk outside for a few minutes on the tour) and if you're a girl maybe some extra shoes in your bag for the tour (walking in the snow in heels = teh suck).

Good luck on your interview. I found it to be a really laid back and low stress (as far as interview goes at least) kind of day so you should be fine!

thanks for the advice!!

so it seems that some people had very laid back interviews and some people had interviews that involved difficult ethical questions (hard for me). is it just luck of the draw as to which kind of interviewer you get?

how was the student interview?

The interviewers are assigned, but you won't know who it is until they come get you. That is, unless you happen to be going after someone else with the same person, and you see who comes and gets them. So yes, luck of the draw there. As far as ethical questions go, I don't think I am the strongest at answering them, but like the tip sheet says (I think), make sure that you convey that the patient is the number one priority.

My student interview felt really short, perhaps because the interviews I had done before were 45 min or an hour long. It wasn't super conversational, it felt like he was just reading off a list of questions, but by no means was he grilling me. The questions from him were all pretty basic, and I imagine it'd be pretty difficult to delve too deeply into anything with only 20 minutes.

The tour involves a moderate amount of outside walking. If you've never been in snow, and you're wearing dress shoes (assuming you are a male) just don't take to large of steps and you'll be fine not slipping. OSU is very good about keeping sidewalks cleared but that doesn't mean snow won't blow over. I wore a heavier winter long-coat when I arrived, and they'll keep your coat for you during the day and give it to you when you need it, but I just kept my sport jacket on for the walk outside in 25 degree weather and I was fine.

Driving-stay on the main roads. Once again, once you get to OSU the roads are fine. try and get on the highways as soon as possible as they are pretty well plowed. The side streets in columbus are notorious for not being plowed. For example, take 315 over olentangy river road...

how was the student interview?

My faculty interview was very laid back. Granted he went to the same undergrad I did 20 years ago, and we had a lot to talk about (and I learned how old some of my premed profs REALLY are). It was very conversational, very relaxed, but also some very weird questions that I had not thought of before. One was (in relation to my conducting a student orchestra): "If you could choose any piece in the orchestra's repertoire to perform in front of the admissions committee, which one would it be, and why?"

That was a surprising question!

So after the interview is over, how did you all get to the airport? Will admissions help us out by calling a cab? How can we call a cab if we don't know what time we will be done? Thanks for the help!

If I remember correctly you find out what time your interviews are during lunch, so at that time you can probably estimate what time it will be over depending. I think I was done around 3. Give yourself a little time for extra conversation etc but there are tons of cabs in Columbus and esp. during the day it probably won't take that long to get there. All the cabs numbers are like 444-4444 or 777-7777 if you want to call one yourself.

I'm pretty sure admissions was calling cabs for people when I interviewed.

They'll definitely call one for you if you need help; they're really nice about things like that. They truly make an effort to make the experience as convenient as they can for you.

Was recently admitted to OSU and am super stoked about it. This is one of my top choices, and I got a really great impression of the school on the interview day. That being said, I do have a few questions for any OSU medical students who may frequent this thread:

1) I'm currently choosing btw Pitt, OSU and CWRU. If you also faced this choice (or something similar), what was it about OSU that reeled you in? I know there's a good bit of students who choose OSU over CWRU in particular, so I'd be curious to hear your reasons.

2) What would you change about your school? Does anything bother you?

3) Conversely, what's your favorite aspect of OSUCOM?

4) What is mentorship like at OSU? If you know you want to go into Optho/Derm/Rads/ortho/whatever, is there a mechanism in place to help you find a mentor that will help you develop as a future residency candidate?

5) For the clinical years, did you find yourself dealing with any scut-work? Did OSU accommodate your need to schedule residency interviews by allowing time off? Were you satisfied with the level of responsibility you were given and did you find the evaluation process to be transparent and fair?

6) Here's a tough one: Do you think OSU will crack the USNWR top 20 by 2015? I know this is their explicit goal (from the mouth of the OSUMC CEO) and the University is behind it 100%, but I'm just curious how much of that is showmanship and how much is a reflection of the school's actual upward momentum.

Thanks in advance!

I can answer a few of these, as I had a similar decision bt those schools last year.

Was recently admitted to OSU and am super stoked about it. This is one of my top choices, and I got a really great impression of the school on the interview day. That being said, I do have a few questions for any OSU medical students who may frequent this thread:

Main reasons I picked OSU over Case and pitt is tuition, OSU was much cheaper for me. I'd say I strayed away from Case bc quite a few students I talked to said their anatomy program was weak, and it was so weak several students who want to go into surgery would often get a MS in anatomy. I picked OSU over Pitt purely for monetary reasons, pitt is quite a chunk of change!

2) What would you change about your school? Does anything bother you?

Nothing, I do feel sometimes they ask our opinions on classes way too much (some definitely see this as a good thing, however). Ie after every block there is a required evaluation for each prof and students are also asked to critique the curriculum, that is fine and all but sometimes I feel that as students we are not qualified to know what we need to learn in order to be a good doc.

3) Conversely, what's your favorite aspect of OSUCOM?

The people, its awesome! Also med students here get treated really well by the staff and faculty of the hospital, they just can't wait to teach us everything! It really is motivating that almost everyone is here to make sure you learn, and be pretty good at it too.

4) What is mentorship like at OSU? If you know you want to go into Optho/Derm/Rads/ortho/whatever, is there a mechanism in place to help you find a mentor that will help you develop as a future residency candidate?

Not sure yet, certainly if you want to seek it no one's gonna tell you no. We do get matched up with a preceptor which we are required to go to their clinic starting this month i believe.

5) For the clinical years, did you find yourself dealing with any scut-work? Did OSU accommodate your need to schedule residency interviews by allowing time off? Were you satisfied with the level of responsibility you were given and did you find the evaluation process to be transparent and fair?

YES, notice how much it has jumped just in the past few years, and look at that new hospital that will be open by then, OSU is going places.

Thanks in advance!

feel free to PM me if you have any more or specific questions

Could anyone comment on the revised curriculum (being implemented on 2012) and how it is different from (in an advantageous way) the current one?

Also, after reading through the posts, it seems as though there is 1 faculty interviewer and 1 student interviewer?

Hey, has anybody heard any news on merit scholarships yet?

Aren't they switching to a curriculum similar to CWRU's? If it is, then instead of having lectures, they would have a lot more emphasis on Problem Based Learning groups with only a couple hours of lecture a week. Material would be presented by studying a given case. Students, in groups supervised by a faculty observer, specify learning objectives, study the material on their own time, and present to the group.

Is there a class of 2015 community on either SDN or Facebook or something? Want to meet my future classmates!

Thanks for your replies, WildcatS11 & osumc2014 👍

I also doubt this. They used to have a PBL path in the curriculum (see: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=114493), but it has since been nixed (good call, IMO).

Personally, Case's PBL-heavy curriculum may be the deal breaker for me. I've heard one too many senior medical students advise me to avoid PBL "at all costs," and i get the feeling its not an efficient way to learn, especially when you're knee-deep in completely new information and have Step 1 breathing down your neck.

OSU Grad here . . .

1) I'm currently choosing btw Pitt, OSU and CWRU. If you also faced this choice (or something similar), what was it about OSU that reeled you in? I know there's a good bit of students who choose OSU over CWRU in particular, so I'd be curious to hear your reasons.

Big reason people choose OSU over CWRU is tuition. That being said, when I interviewed for residency in Cleveland, some of the residents said they didn't have an overly high impression of the quality of education Case med students were getting based on their interactions with them, which surprised me.

2) What would you change about your school? Does anything bother you?
Ha - funny that someone mentioned the CAPS program. It was slightly different when I was there - they've actually combined two separate courses that we had to take into CAPS, in part because of criticisms that the separate programs didn't seem to know what the programs were doing and would often schedule stupid stuff during test weeks and/or all would have multiple things due at the same time. I can't think of anything that bothered me that probably wouldn't have bothered me at any med school. There are always stupid things that will annoy people, but you will have those anywhere.

3) Conversely, what's your favorite aspect of OSUCOM?

The diversity. It is such a huge institution that there are opportunities available in just about anything you could imagine.

4) What is mentorship like at OSU? If you know you want to go into Optho/Derm/Rads/ortho/whatever, is there a mechanism in place to help you find a mentor that will help you develop as a future residency candidate?

All of the above have interest groups that tend to be fairly active (depends on the leaders each year). Interest groups are a great way to find a mentor. They had started assigning students to an adviser a few years ago, and if you had a particular specialty you knew you were interested in you could request a faculty adviser in that specialty. I don't know if they are still doing that or not. I requested an EM faculty member and was assigned to the residency program director. She always made time to meet with me. I met with her to discuss scheduling 3rd year, to discuss the pros/cons of taking a year off for a dual degree, to discuss 4th year scheduling, to talk about what programs to apply to, how to decide my rank list, etc.

5) For the clinical years, did you find yourself dealing with any scut-work? Did OSU accommodate your need to schedule residency interviews by allowing time off? Were you satisfied with the level of responsibility you were given and did you find the evaluation process to be transparent and fair?

You will always have a certain amount of "scut". However, you have to think about what scut really is . . .I had a senior resident tell me an interesting perspective: "If I ask you to do something that I would have to do if I didn't have you do it, then it's not really scut . . . it's resident work". And to a certain extent, it's true. Scut is where they have you do stupid **** that they wouldn't do if you weren't there just to waste your time or if they have you do their work so they can sit on their asses. If they ask you to help out with things because they are busy, I don't think it's scut. Personally, I was usually glad when there were things I could actually do to help the residents out. Most of them work very hard. Honestly, I felt I saw/experienced very little scut. You will always run across the occasional resident that will have you do things that they should really be doing and then claim they did them, but it's the exception and not the rule at OSU.

6) Here's a tough one: Do you think OSU will crack the USNWR top 20 by 2015? I think there's a very good chance they will. OSU has secured a number of large NIH grants and other research money (a key criteria in USNWR rankings).

Did anyone else watch the sugar bowl?? what an exciting final 3 minutes.. my heart just about dropped when that punt got stuffed..

Pretty glad I didn't schedule my interview for tmrw because if i were in Columbus right now, I most likely wouldn't be getting ANY sleep tonight.

I drove home! But I also live 11 miles up 315! The admissions office will ask you sometime during the day when your flight is, and a very logistically-impressive office member (don't remember her name) will minimize the number of cabs necessary so that the people who have flights at the same time can share a cab up to the airport. I did note that while they were waiting (I stuck around to chat for a bit) that she did tell them the company she calls only takes cash so either bring cash or you'll find yourself running to the ATM in the hospital (which is only a 5 minute walk away, but it is cold...) In any case, she'll call the cab for you once they know about what time you will be done so you won't have to wait around for too long.

Yeah, I can't believe OSU almost blew a 3 TD lead! I mean someone had to represent the BIG TEN!!!!! What an ending though, blocked punt followed by an interception two plays later! I was ready for Pryor to fumble the snap!

Has any decision deferred people gotten "The Call" yet? I spoke with the admissions office and they said that they would review the decision deferred candidates again in early January...

SCARY. I was deferred in the middle of November and haven't heard anything yet.

A friend of mine interviewed in November and was given decision deferred status. She hasn't heard anything yet either.

I'm in the same boat--deferred mid-November and nothing since. Here's to hoping all of us get "The Call" the next time they review us! 😀

Has anyone checked their medSTAR recently? I checked mine earlier this week and I had the option to RSVP for the second-look weekend (which meals you would be attending, etc.). I just logged on again today and that option is now gone.

Anyone else notice this?

Yes, that happened to me as well. I emailed them, but haven't heard anything back yet..
