I don't think it's *true" pass fail, in that it essentially amounts to grades "Honors, High Pass, Pass, Sub-pass, Fail"

...Something along those lines. Correct me if I'm wrong (and I want to be wrong).

P/F that's it, at the end of year, top 10% are honors, top 25% are letters, rest is just pass, but test wise it's still P/F

I just submitted my application withdrawal as I recently received an acceptance to my first choice school. For those still in the hunt for OSU I hope this opens your slot.

Good luck!

I didn't realize it was P/F for exams. I thought it was Honors, High Pass, etc. Thanks for the information!

Yeah it's just P/F, 70% and up pass for each test. The honors/letters at the end of the year only matter for a small scholarship (like 5k for the next year) but that's basically yet. Obviously, for AOA they have to be able to rank you somehow, so they use honors/letters for AOA.

Would you mind explaining what AOA is? I've heard of it numerous times but don't know exactly what it is.

It stands for Alpha Omega Alpha, a medical school honor society. http://www.alphaomegaalpha.org/

Med school version of Phi Beta Kappa. Not anything to "focus" on.

Fun-fact: Dr. Cutty graduated Summa Cum Laude and then went on to medical school where she was inducted into AOA.

Decision Monday!!!!

Anyone else turning to bad reality television to distract them for the next few hours??

:xf::xf::xf::xf::xf:

Missed the call last night - worked last night. Got the accepted status this morning. Soooooooooooooo excited! I'm gonna be a Buckeye woo hoo!!!!

Hey guys! So I have a few questions for some current OSUCOM students (or anyone else that can answer these questions!)
Do prospective students usually bring a parent/significant other to second lool weekend? I live pretty far from Ohio, so the plane tickets are about $400/person....
Also, how are people looking for roommates? (other than through the Class of 2015 facebook page?)

Thanks in advance! excited to see the school for a second time 🙂

Hello all, I was just wondering if the admissions office will hold onto luggage and personal belongings for interview day? My flight leaves 2 hours after the interviews have concluded and I will not have time to return to a hotel. Anyone have experience with this? Thanks

Hey GoZags!

Yup! You will be able to leave your stuff in the "home-base" room. You will be there for the majority of the day except when you on go on tour and when you go to your interview. Welcome/Intro/Lunch etc will be in this partiular room. Congrats and good luck!

Yep, they will. They're awesome. They'll even call a cab for you.

I'm an OOS student and a whole bunch of us brought our luggage with us. The admission staff are awesome, they'll even coordinate cabs and everything. When I was there, a med student actually drove us to the airport. 2 hours is plenty of time.

I am in love with OSU and leaning towards going here. Can current students comment on their favorite/least favorite aspects of the school? Is there, anything you wish you knew before you matriculated? Thanks so much. osumc2014 your pasts posts have been super helpful, especially the calendar.

Congratulations to all those accepted and keep hope alive for all those deferred. Good luck to this interviewing today!

If you don't mind me asking and posting here, what other schools are you considering? OSU is currently at the top of my list but I'm looking at Case pretty hard too.

I would definitely like to know the answers to these questions as well. So far, everyone that I've talked to from 1st to 3rd years 😍OSU.

Hey spideyman44!

Yah..I am looking at SUNY Downstate. FWIW, I got a merit scholarship so it now makes them about comparable.

PS: I definitely prefer Wolverine. LOL

My favorite aspect? the people and the class size, we are large enough that if you are interested in anything, there's gonna be a student group for it. Also we love donating to charity and have tons of fundraising events for that. And for those who are skeptical of the big class, you will find that everyone does get into much smaller friend groups to make the class feel smaller, but you at least know just about everyone in the class which is great, we have fun together. There's a site called tutornet where we all post study guides, charts, flashcards, practice questions, whatever that we made for the block on there to share! It's a really cooperative atmosphere. I also think our anatomy is stronger than a lot of schools, we have a really good anatomy grad school here. Also new floors on prior and new hospital and Gordon Gee (our president) promising top 20 within I forget how many years, there's no reason not to be here!

If I had to pick something I don't like I would say that the school does ask for our opinions a lot (a lot of evaluations that get looked at seriously), although some would consider this a good thing, I think we do it too much, to me medical education is still a mystery, meaning I don't know what I am supposed to learn, if the school depends too much on my opinions, I think it will just end up as a jumbled mess. But this issue will be dealt with when the new curriculum arrives.

If I had to know something before coming here? You get thrown in, really fast, the adjustment takes a long time. I would say work on your study skills, and always stay on task. The procrastinators (including myself) will take longer to adjust, but everyone does eventually. Get some shadowing done, volunteer at free clinics, do some reading on global health and get an opinion on how you would change the healthcare in America. I think those are so important to have as you go thru your education. Don't study in the summer obviously, not that it wouldn't help it's just better to take tons of vacations and relax (don't relax so much that you can't jump right back in however).

Hope that helps, please ask if you have any questions

congrats on getting in!

Awesome!!!

Thanks so much for the thorough response. I am really looking forward to revisit weekend. I definitely want a school with a collaborative atmosphere. I know you are a first-year, but any insight on board preparation? Are the NBME shelf exams only offered to ISP students? (http://medicine.osu.edu/students/life/resources/handbook/Documents/4AcademicCalendar10-11.pdf)

@Top 20. That will indeed be sweet! I think I recall it being 2015...

In terms of housing, I am OOS and I want to be able to secure housing close to campus, how likely is that? I do not have a car and want something within 5/10 minute walking distance.

Thanks for your insight and thanks for the Congrats.

Congrats on the merit scholarship! That's great. Definitely makes the decision a little tougher.

Wolverine is awesome too. He's tied with spiderman. Batman is my overall #1.

Thank you for the insight osumc2014. Do you have any advice for people that have never been exposed to anatomy? Any book recommendations too?

Are there any 4th years here who can talk about their experience at OSU looking back?

Also, how helpful was the faculty in the match process? And will they make a call for you if you need it? I guess I'm trying to get an idea of the relationship between students and the doctors they work with on rotations.

Thank you!!!

@Batman. Sounds good.

@anatomy. FWIW, I have a DROID X and I am addicted to Speed Anatomy. I never took anatomy before and its a fun way to get some sort of exposure. I have the free lite version. Check it out here: http://speedanatomy.com/

Hey! I am about to graduate from tOSU as an undergrad and have an interview on 3/23. I was looking for apartments close to the medical school campus just this past weekend and if you are willing to make concessions like a dishwasher, washer/dryer in home/complex, air conditioning, and parking then there is still a good selection. I'm not saying that your apt. is just going to have a roof, floor, and bathroom ;-). I was looking for a place with all of those amenities and those pickins' were indeed slim close to the Med Center. I would look into Northe Steppe Realty (www.ohiostaterentals.com), Buckeye Real Estate (www.buckeyere.com), University Apartments (http://ohiostateapts.com), and OSU Properties (www.osuproperties.com). Good luck and congrats!

Thanks so so so so much! That is really really helpful! Good Luck on your interview.

That looks like a sweet app. Thanks for the heads up.

For anatomy, I have netters and some other random ones, but I like Rohens better.

Yes you can find plenty of places to live within walking distance, I would recommend looking up places as supplied from above links and then calling to arrange showings during the time you are there at 2nd look (where you can also find roommates!)

I don't know much about board prep other than that our curriculum is inherently designed for the boards, ie basic sciences first then body systems 2nd year closer to the boards, so from least relevant to most relevant to step 1. I wouldn't worry about it, we have good board scores and the difference bt ISP avg and IP avg is minimal, also most residencies know that Ohio State medical students are very well trained.

Great! I will put that on my to-do list during revisit. Thanks for all your insight.

Hi everyone, I'm not familiar with Columbus and the OSUCOM campus, but where do M1's (and other med students) usually live, and is it a good idea to bring a car first year?
During Second Look, is there a convenient way for prospective students to travel around town and look at apartments around the area?

Any news or updates for those of you deferred?

Last time I called the admissions, I was told that they would review the deferred list sometime in April. I guess that means the deferred applicants are not receiving active review at this stage of cycle.

Not sure anyone would know but do most people who get interviewed at this stage in the game receive deferred status? I am interviewing on monday and I guess I wanted to prepare myself to be deferred. I know that if we are interviewing, that there are indeed spots in the class but I just wasn't sure what to expect because the less spots available, the more competitive the process.

Is there a facebook group or anything for the potential class of 2011 to connect with other incoming students to discuss things like living arrangements etc., that anyone is aware of?

I would assume so, obviously in the beginning of the season when there is 220 spots more spots are available than now, but as ppl have said before we DO NOT interview for the waitlist, so there's always actual spots when you interview!

you guys are class of 2015 😛

I could have sworn I read somewhere that interviewees need to bring a small photo of themselves to the interview, but as I read over my interview invite and emails, I can't find it anywhere, perhaps I am getting it confused with another school but just for confirmation I wanted to ask if anyone who has interviewed recently was required to bring a photograph of themselves? If so, what size? Thanks!

I think it said it on the letter on the status page. I brought a small photo (2" x 3" with my AMCAS# on it. They asked for it when I got there.

I forgot mine and sent them a digital copy of an old Facebook profile picture that the office printed out (I hopped on a computer really quick before they collected us for the overview with Dr. Capers).

For current medical students, are their any costs outside of moving that students should make sure to have money saved up for. Books, computer, etc?

Soooo ... I lost my admissions USB drive - so sad 🙁 - is the admissions video we saw on our interview day available online?

Someone posted earlier about this so I'm sorry to bring it up again. Is bringing a parent a bad idea for second look? It wouldn't bother me either way, but from the invitation it seemed like they were okay/expected to come.

ya bring em, I saw buncha people with parents, especially if they are really involved in your life/app process, they should be able to see where you ll spend the next 4 years of your life!

If we have not heard a thing post-secondary is it safe to assume that it's game over??

OSU just got destroyed in the research rankings put out by US news today...

I think their goal of reaching top 20 by 2015 just became unrealistic...

You typically don't get your loan money for a few weeks after schools starts - so you need some money for your security deposit, first months rent, food, gas if you need it, parking, etc. Obviously you get reimbursed once loans kick in, but you still need some start up money. And yeah for a few books, especially since anatomy is first.

I didn't think about a parking pass. I'll make sure just to save up as much as possible. Thanks!
