thanks for the info. I'm just trying to figure out my chance of acceptance after being deferred. Wake Forest doesn't "overfill" their class, and 30-50% of people wait listed are eventually accepted. was hoping Ohio State would be similar to WF and not UVA! also trying to figure out why it wouldn't be until June that they look at deferred candidates again? that seems really late if May 15th is the big day. :\

Although May 15th is the "official" date, many things can happen where people's decisions aren't finalized yet, we want to make sure that if someone said for certain they are not matriculating, that they are for sure NOT matriculating. Also, those who hold OSU as the only acceptance but are wait listed at their top schools find out hypothetically say May 25th that they got into their top school, they ll withdraw from OSU. So June makes sure that applicants are pretty sure where they are going. Then we ll evaluate how many spots are open, and evaluate the deferred applicants and see what happens. There is always movement every year, but it has steadily been declining and I believe last year less than 10? were accepted after May 15th. But don't give up hope! Slower the movement means the more people want to come here

10!? out of how many? 🙁

I want this school SO bad!! it's so frustrating being this close to a school of my dreams, going through so many bottlenecks just to be deferred and probably rejected. /end rant

No idea, that info is not released much, but, as it is so far, there has been a lot of movement already compared to last year, so that is good news for those who are deferred, I would NOT give up hope just yet! good luck

Im not sure if I am the only person on sdn from our interview date last week but regardless good luck tonight everyone!!!😀

has anyone heard yet? i can't stand this waiting game anymore...

Nope... I think it's over. I honestly wonder if they accepted anyone this late in the game.

*cracks open a beer* welcome to the deferred club, guys.:xf::xf:

Just declined my acceptance to OSU. I wish everyone that's been deferred the best of luck!

I am a guy looking for at least one male roommate next year, more if possible. Anyone out there still looking for housing? I'm trying to find some places to look at close to the med campus, PM me if you are interested!

I just graduated from undergrad yesterday so I guess I can say I'm officially a Buckeye now! I can't wait to start! see you guys in August 🙂

Hey all,
I just got a message today (and I'm sure many of you did too) about a 6 week pre-entry summer program that goes over gross anatomy, neuroanatomy, and immunology before school starts. I never took anatomy in college, and I am definitely considering doing it. Anyone heard anything about the program?
And yes, see you all in August 😀

It's really for people who have been out of college for a long time or majored in other subjects

Withdrew all of my other acceptances and sent in my $25 check today. It's only after this that I get the e-mail asking for individuals to defer for a year.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news...but if you're on "hold" or on the waitlist, it appears that they have overbooked the class by at least 50 individuals. Anyone thinking of taking them up on their offer and sitting out a year for a year of free tuition?

Kinda weird that they're sending this email out before may 15th...

Wow free year of tuition for 1 year defer? crazyy

1 year of free tution? 34k...

it might be a good idea for people that were thinking about taking a year off, but didnt get a chance.. but for those who have already taken a year of many years off, it doesn't make any sense. It would theoretically be taking a year off your status as an attending (some 40 years from now, at which time you'd be making 100k+), and you'd be delaying your dream for a year...

yes but think about how much money: 50 x 34k = 1.7 million, where does that money come from?

Honestly...I thought the exact same thing. Why not wait until at least the 15th since things could change substantially before then? My guess is that they are trying to plant a seed before people start getting too excited about attending in the fall.

Maybe bringing up the possibility now will get some people thinking. I brought this up earlier...but I think this same situation happened at UVA last year.

Les Wexner? 😀

Not only that...but next year's class goes from 220 to 170 (~23% decrease in open seats).

I was wondering about this -- maybe the number of withdrawals is behind its normal pace? Or, they see the acceptances/waitlists of students still holding a place in the class and have a pretty good idea of who's going to end up coming? Someone at Second Look said that the turnout was pretty high, but I'm not sure if it was higher than normal.

I agree with the idea that it would be good for someone who thought about taking a year and didn't, as opposed to others who have already taken time off.

Possibly tell students with multiple acceptances to maybe not come here? idk

Yeah, I am confused why they did this earlier than the 15th. Maybe an incentive to grab quality students who are looking elsewhere (either lower cost or better reputation?) as well as making next years class extra competitive? I think we need to look what happened to UVA's stats after they over-admitted last year and had to backpedal by offering free masters program. OSUCOM is smart, and I am not sure this was something 'bad' that happened to them...

Aaaaaaaand cue my search for gainful employment with big pharma.

/hope

I too am very confused by this offer, especially because it is before May 15th. Ok, missing it by 10 or 20, but by 50!?!?!?!? If you look at how well OSU runs their interview days and the admissions process overall, it is surprising that someone made this big of an error...

This happened at Cornell a few years back, and not enough people took them up on the offer. What if not enough people take OSU up on the offer here? %0 is a lot more than 10...

Any current students at OSUCOM have any insight?

are they really cutting class size next year?? is it because of funding issues?

If they're cutting class size, I would imagine it has more to do with all the curriculum changes on the horizon. A move toward more team based learning and early patient interaction modules would probably be more easily achieved/manageable with a smaller class.

Besides, I get the impression that funding has never been an issue at OSU. There's gotta be an olympic-sized swimming pool filled exclusively with gold coins (ala duck tales) somewhere on campus.

Where did you get info about them cutting the class size? I doubt it has to do with funding...they are building a brand new hospital that will be done in ~ 3 years

Oh nevermind, I misread what you wrote about how next year's class would go from 220-170. Didn't realize that you were talking about the 50 deffered applicants that would automatically have a spot in next year's class

I heard that other school sometimes over admit students into their entering class, a good percentage to be admitted elsewhere and rescind the offer. I'm guess either OSU really did accept too many students or to few have declined their acceptances so far and they are trying to make for up for it. My guess it is a combination of the two, since how much they admit is probably based off data from previous years, but even when statistics is applied there is always a small percent chance that you to many people keep their acceptances.

Most likely they accepted similar numbers as last year, but just so happens that many more students want to come here. Although we don't know for sure yet, cause it's not may 15th...

I agree that it's probably more people selecting OSU than in previous years...but I kept thinking "why would they make this offer before May 15th?" It seems a little strange to me. So, here's an idea I had...based completely, totally, and 100% on speculation:

(Sorry for college football terminology)

They not only offered deferment prior to May 15th, but they require that you respond prior to May 15th as well (May 13th).

Do you think they may be trying to grey-shirt individuals? They extended the interview season this year...I can only guess this is because they were overwhelmed with the number of highly qualified applicants. Are they trying to boost the numbers of not only this year's class...but next year's as well?

Just an idea. Now, why would they already be planning to boost the stats of next year's class? Well...that would require even more speculation. One could argue that they are worried (with their subsequent slip in rankings) that their applicant pool next year may also slip.

All speculation. And, in my opinion, all of this points to good things for OSU. It means that (1) competitive applicants want to go to OSU and (2) OSU has the resources to put up $1.7 mil in lost tuition (which, now, makes me a little disappointed in my financial aid award 🙂).

Although that sounds like reasonable speculation, I would be extremely disappointed if students base their medical education on how a school ranks in research funding, and certainly would miss out on great schools, OSU included.

I couldn't agree more...but who knows why certain students apply to certain schools. SDN is an invaluable resource when it comes to enlightening individuals on this topic, but not everyone frequents this website.

Perhaps they are just hedging their bets.

Also OSU did go down in rankings in research funding (for the whole hospital, which med students might contribute to 0.01% of the research), but as a med student I don't think anyone would ever notice, we are like a small sardine in an ocean, sure the ocean shrunk, but I wouldn't know.
